For this weekend's event:
Nice to see the walking tour of the Alexandra Palace branch line is still going. Took it in 2000 and enjoyed walking the route past the house I grew up in.
ReplyDeleteI've been wracking my brains to work out how they were going to deal with Ally-Pally's hill? Cog-toothed underground, 1-in-4?
ReplyDeleteH
The steep approach was by electric single deck trams when the Palace was built. The steam railway approach started further back at Finsbury Park and climbed steadily through Crouch End, Highgate around the edge of the high ground, hence the name Northern Heights, to Muswell Hill the top of the ridge. Walking the trail you see over East London with Docklands the new landmark.
ReplyDeleteI'll make a note to do it one day . . . we did Ally Pally shows for a while, and I was still smoking, so when I went out for a 'fag break' I got to watch The Shard slowing climbing out of the haze on the horizon, several miles away.
ReplyDeleteSame think when the arch went up at the new Wembley, you could (still cam) see it from Sandown Park when the sun's on it. or dark clouds are behind it!
