About Me

No Fixed Abode, Home Counties, United Kingdom
I’m a 60-year-old Aspergic gardening CAD-Monkey. Sardonic, cynical and with the political leanings of a social reformer, I’m also a toy and model figure collector, particularly interested in the history of plastics and plastic toys. Other interests are history, current affairs, modern art, and architecture, gardening and natural history. I love plain chocolate, fireworks and trees, but I don’t hug them, I do hug kittens. I hate ignorance, when it can be avoided, so I hate the 'educational' establishment and pity the millions they’ve failed with teaching-to-test and rote 'learning' and I hate the short-sighted stupidity of the entire ruling/industrial elite, with their planet destroying fascism and added “buy-one-get-one-free”. Likewise, I also have no time for fools and little time for the false crap we're all supposed to pretend we haven't noticed, or the games we're supposed to play. I will 'bite the hand that feeds', to remind it why it feeds.

B is for Blue Shirts!

I found this cutting in the Blue Box folder, real not digital, so scanned it, then it could be in the digital folder too! Taken from issue 12 of Military Modelling magazine from 2000, I think that was when they were trying to get-out 16 issues a year, so these were probably launched in time for the Christmas market?

We've briefly looked at the knights/fantasy set, a few pirates, and was there Biker Mice from Mars, or am I thinking of something-else entirely! The figures in all sets (there was a Roman fort too) are rather juvenile in execution, but the accessories and scenics are very useful, from HO through to about 28mm.

Goes and looks them up, it was Teen Turtles, and possibly Playmates!

S is for 'Soldiers'

I wonder how many loyal readers from the UK (or elsewhere if it was syndicated?) will remember, in the autumn schedules for 1985 (or '86/'87, maybe, elsewhere?), a broadcasting-extravaganza of a televisual production, with all the Reithian boxes ticked - Educational, Informative and Entertaining - called Soldiers, and presented by the mighty author of airport-carousel paperbacks, Frederick Forsyth, no less? A strange anti-war, Brwreakshiteer conservative!

Below is the promotional leaflet/marketing press release, which doesn't appear to be copyrighted, so I don't have to worry about the 'fair use' paragraph or anything! It is one of many pieces of crap in the stash which will have to be dealt with over the next few years, and recycled properly or sold to some other mug, but which might jog your memory of the series;

No? Well, it was a long time ago, and I certainly don't remember it being on the telly-box, despite staring in it! But then I had gone off to Austria (pretending NOT to be a British Soldier - they were neutral!) to do my Ski Instructors Course and be lectured into the benefits of regular colonic irrigation by a BASI instructor who had gone beyond Hippy, and was full-on nut-job, but he knew how to ski, and teach skiing!

You see, the supposedly 'independent' BBC, are not above getting so close to the Ministry of Defence (MOD), they can save a small fortune in extra's fees, by employing the British Army - for nothing! It's called low-level corruption, and happens in 'so called' democracies (favourite phrase of Trumpies and fuckwits), all the time!

The real reason Napoleon lost the battle of Wahterrr'looo, was not because he had the shits all day, nor was it because he'd spent the previous two decades killing the flower of France or leaving them casually in Egypt, or all over Eastern Europe, it was because the Allies had superior transport - heay; the camera never lies!

A-Company, 1 Glosters, being a company of somebody else;

"Form squares! And prepare to defend against cavalry!"

I'm in there somewhere, but I can only - now - name Benefield, Thomas, Carl Kerry, possibly Freebrey & Cpl Cordingley? Waiting, endlessly waiting for something violent to happen, the lot of the Infantry.

And you see, the reason we never got paid, was that the Army are considered to be paid 24-hours a day (which of course means they are well below the minimum hourly wage!), so 'didn't need' paying twice?

Prouse and Alan Greathurst? I have a friend who made her living as an extra, Natwest commercials, London's Burning, all sorts, and when she did a non-speaking role as body-double for the remake of Lost in Space, she made enough in eight weeks to allow her to emigrate (Canada), with her family . . . I reckon that the good-old 'Dear Aunty Beeb' owe me about ten-grand, more with interest & inflation, the thieving shitbags!

While we were in Kenya, earlier the same year, some elements (Support Company, I think?) were used in anachronistic kit, to do a WWII beach assault from Landing Craft, I don't know if it was the same production, or some B-movie which ended-up straight-to-video, or on the cutting-room floor, but it was another dodgy deal, using British troops for free labour, for profit! But then, so was building Daniel arap Moi's private airstrip . . . another story for another day!

News, Views Etc . . . Herald Toys & Models

Apologies to Barney, this actually came through on Friday, but my Internet has been a bit intermittent and I'd neglected Hotmail!

"....this week we have an eclectic collection of British plastics from the 1950's, including Cherilea, Crescent, Herald, Lone Star, Trojan, Timpo and VP. Themes include Wild West, Khaki Infantry, Knights in armour, Arabs & Foreign Legion. In all there are three pages of New Products for you to review...."

And Barney's landing page is here Herald Toys & Models, click on 'Items for sale' then click on 'What's New' to get the full results.

I also found some lovely stuff for Easter in Hotmail!

News, Views Etc . . . Herald Toys & Models

Barney's been busy this winter, another release from him reads . . .

"...this week we have an exciting collection of 'Swoppets' from Poole in Dorset, including some superb C15th Knights, some of which have come straight out of a boxed set and are in pristine condition. We also have some nice early Herald ceremonial figures from the Manhattan Collection, including a group of four very early Guardsmen, marching at the slope, all with the "British Made" Zang trademark to their bases..."

News, Views Etc . . . Herald Toys & Models Updates

As I mentioned the other day, there were two releases from Barney in the queue, to which another has been added and as I've now taken everything off this piece of shit HP-17 in order to send it back for a refund (it's not right!), an image-free post is a useful one right now! Good news, I talked myself into a Mac' replying to EY the other day, so went and got one yesterday, so  . . . another weeks setting-up and getting used to a new system and I should be firing on all cylinders!

" . . . this week we have for sale a good group of Speedwell figures from the Robin Hood set, together with a smaller scale Speedwell mounted cowboy, moulded in two-pieces. Happy collecting as always, Barney - PS: Royal Mail have now resumed International services, so hopefully the cyber incident from 11 January has now been resolved and normal service resumed!"

" . . . from the Manhattan Collection we are very pleased to be able to offer two rare original Herald catalogues for 1957 and 1958, together with an original Herald New Lines leaflet for February 1956."

" . . . this weekend we have an interesting collection of Barrett & Sons Zoo Series models, mostly from the old Taylor & Barrett hollow-cast moulds, including a Polar Bear Family, Seated Lioness and Cub, together with a very rare Red Deer Stag and Hind matching pair. Some models we have never seen in plastic and are not depicted in the Plastic Warrior Taylor & Barrett Special. We also have a few B&S Farm animals, including a scarce tree, moulded in two parts."

News, Views etc . . . Barney's Back

And firing on all cylinders with two post-holiday messages and a sale! On thursday this message;

"Dear collector, a belated Happy New Year to all our customers and friends across the World! I'd like to thank Aaron at Dorset Tech for updating the website, which had not been fully functioning since December. The landing page has been updated to include the date for the upcoming Plastic Warrior show in May*, where Herald Toys and Models will have our usual array of vintage plastic toy soldiers and models. This month we are continuing to add figures from the extensive Manhattan and Wiltshire collections, some of which will also be available via our eBay shop. We are always happy to try and find that elusive figure or model you're looking for. With all best wishes for 2023! Barney."

And today this news arrived;

"...our January SALE is now on amongst several categories including ACW, Battle of Waterloo, Cherilea, Crescent, Lone Star, the Roger Saunders and Wiltshire Collections"

So I advise getting over there (Herald Toys & Models) and seeing if there's something which tickles your fancy!

News, Views Etc . . . Herald Toys & Models Back From Summer Break

 Latest news from Barney was heating the ether on Tuesday;

". . . this week we have added some more SALE items to our stock and will be continuing to add more figures from the Wiltshire collection, over the coming days and months, including some Deetail models (though the majority of literally several hundred Deetail models from the collection will be available via our sister Herald Toys and Models eBay Shop). To assist European, USA/Canadian and Australian/New Zealand collectors we are happy to issue a dummy invoice upon request and place it on the outside of your package (please contact Barney directly for more details if you are interested). It is now a little over 9 years since the launch of the website and I just wanted to thank everyone for your continued support and hope you continue to find the myriad of figures of interest."

Barney's site - for latecomers - is to be found here.

News, Views Etc . . . Barney's shops!

New news from Herald Toys & Models;

"...We are delighted to announce that we have now acquired the remainder of the Wiltshire collection, which has particularly strong sections of Cherilea, Crescent and Lone Star, including many harder to find figures. This week we are kicking things off with the Charbens section, including some superb ACW Confederate and Union 'Moveable' soldiers. We will also be selling a large number of Britains Deetail toy soldiers and Timpo Swoppets, from the same collection, mainly via our Herald Toys and Models eBay Shop, though some will be available here through our website..."

There's an eBay shop? I didn't know there was an eBay shop! So . . .

A is for And so to Bed . . . No! 'London' - A is for And so to London . . .

. . . where we three and thirty, and thirty-three, and more that thirty-more did meet again!

And even some new faces turned-up and a bloody good time was had by all! The weather would have taken some beating (especially after what it gave us today!), the company was fine, the merchandise was piled-high and smelt of old plastic, it had to be the Annual (pandemic's allowing) Plastic Warrior Toy Soldier Show!

Now, I'm not going to bore you with the minutiae; if you were there you know how good it was, if you've been before you have a good idea what you missed, and don't want to be told (it was better - better than ever!), and if you've never been and didn't go, you probably shouldn't be reading this! But one of the features of the show, is the annual release of the latest 'Special Publication'  . . . or even two - in a good year!

Well, this was a vintage year, so we got four! And if you missed them, or the show, or both, I'm here to plug them!

Two volumes on the die-cast accessories that came with or for toy soldiers from the same makers, and the Modern Army Series from Lone Star was one, with all the variations, even the daft blue and chrome ones, a very useful addition to the library.

Crescent was the other maker getting the once over and I must confess I didn't know all the vehicles in the fleet, the M109 for instance, looks excellent, and how many are there in 54mm-compatable, die-cast?

This - however - is essential reading for any British plastics aficionado, it's years since the last black & white version was released, and this all new, all colour edition is a real treat, with lots of new stuff, hard to know where to start, and this is only a quick promo, but yeah . . . if you didn't get one yesterday, you need to get one!

And if the Trojan work is welcome, this in-depth look at BR Moulds is a fantastic volume, some of us suspected it was in the works, the ephemera hinted at in the previous articles we've seen in the magazine clearly pointed at 'more to come' and here it all is, and I mean 'all'; full listings, most known figures, now illustrated with multiple examples, a few unknowns thrown in for good measure, side-by-side comparisons and much conjecture - it is not only a joy of a quick-read, it's genuinely fascinating, and I can't recommend it highly enough.

For all four volumes the contact details are many and available as soon as you've read this;

I'll also plug Matt Thier's White Tower Miniatures, Matt was one of the old faces seen yesterday, and he has two catalogues out at the moment;

Last year's Dark Ages catalogue is still available, but it was announced about now I think, back then, so may be in short supply. A very nice range, I follow the Faceplant page and when he posts a bunch en-mass with all the different shields and weapons, they are stunning. There's over 120 figure-castings now, several horses . . . and a bear!

This is  the new for 2022 listing of the Wild West range, and while I'm not a metal guy, I was tempted by some of the many character figures from TV, the movies and real life (each gets a thumbnail biography and either a still of the movie poster, or a picture of the real person), there are also character figures of named Native Americans, a lovely wagon and all the normal stuff.

Matt also showed me footage of a range of slot & peg-together building which are on the way, with removable roofs and interior floors etc.

Matt is findable here;

I also literally ran-into the  proprietor of Soldiers in Silloth as I was taking his flyer from the front table at the show, and promised to plug his toy soldier museum, and as I'm covering everything else (above) here, I'll give you the cover and a bit of blurb and try to do an A-Z entry with a bit more, I'm also going to try and visit this summer as it looks like an excellent day out!

The museum seems to contain all types of toy soldiers including metal and plastic, with cabinets of sample figures alongside vignettes and dioramas, and of course, it's just off the Hadrien's Wall way, so you could include it in a longer walking/camping holiday or make it part of a long-weekend?

News, Views Etc . . . Herald Toys & Models Press

An update from Barney yesterday was sent to the Spam folder by an overzealous Hotmail bot and I've only just found it so apologies if you missed anything which has already sold, but you can sign-up to the eMail updates yourself, rather than waiting for me to pull my finger out!

" . . . this week we are pleased to offer for sale the Thetford collection of plastic toy soldiers, chiefly Britains and Herald, but also Timpo solids, comprising a good section of American Civil War figures and Swoppet 15th Century Knights. We also have for sale a good collection of 2nd Series Swoppet Wild West models (some with our superb limited edition reproduction boxes) and our usual selection of farm and riding models. We are also pleased to announce the milestone of 2,000 items in our archive, which we hope you will find a useful reference tool."

News, Views Etc . . . Golden Book of Britains Artwork for Sale!

Latest press-release from Barney Brown at Herald Toys & Models is the news that the original artwork for the forth book in the series, jointly authored by Barney and Peter Cole is being made available for sale;

" . . . this week we are giving you a unique opportunity to own the original illustrations used for the best-selling Herald Civilian Models The Golden Years book by Barney Brown and Peter Cole. Carried out in either pen and ink or watercolour by my father, Rodney Brown (who is now aged 87!) in 2012 and 2013, when we worked on the artwork for the book together, these original line drawings and watercolours would make a wonderful accompaniment to the book or as stand alone pieces that would add interest to for the Herald collector."

News, Views Etc . . . Herald Toys & Models - Press Release

Latest from Barney's website, sounds good for Swoppet Knight and civilian fans;

"...we are pleased to offer for sale a very substantial collection of Britains Swoppet knights, including a number of mounted figures. Because of the quantity, we are able to offer all dismounted knights at a special website price of £19.99 each (there are a large number of duplicates, most likely old homeworker stock, please ask for details). Barney's site can be found here.

Later the same day . . .

"Dear Customer, as previously mentioned, we are having to issue supplementary invoices in some cases, particularly if you're a customer from the USA or Europe and your order needs to be sent tracked. We have been subsidising postage charges since September 2013, when the website was launched, but can no longer afford to do this as Royal Mail have regularly increased their prices, particularly over the past 18 months, due to the pandemic and the introduction of World Zone 3 for the USA. Hope you can understand our position. Thank you for your continued support. With all good wishes, Barney."

News, Views Etc . . . New Stock at Herald Toys and Models

Latest press-release from Barney over at Herald Toys & Models;

" . . . this week we have two interesting collections for sale, both from the county of Norfolk, but quite contrasting. The Diss collection is a charming childhood collection of plastic civilian figures, featuring an original Herald early boxed farm set, farm animals and Wild West figures, whilst the Norfolk Collection is a large collection of plastic toy soldiers, diligently accumulated by a dedicated collector to acquiring full loose sets by a number of makers, including Lone Star, Charbens, Cherilea, Crescent and Speedwell."

Lots of 'nice paint' stuff, but it's going quickly . . .
