Another non-toy company whose products had a bit of a Christmassy vibe, also shot at the Birmingham gift fair, but crafty fun, and no polymer in sight, bar a few rabbit-sized, dungaree-buttons!

 

There's something of the primative votive about these.

CBC is for Church Bought Chochkes

It's stretching it a bit, but there you go! Shot back in February at Birmingham, here's an outfit who's own website make it quite clear they only supply gift shops and the ecclesiastical community, wholesale, rather than having any kind of ambitions to retail enterprise, and as they've been going since 1950, it's obviously worked for them.

 

Mostly Advent stuff, so relevant now, there are a few more general religious themes in among them, like the smaller metal items near the end of the post.

Le is for Noel, Figurines, and Max - Lemax!

I've tried, I've really tried, to stay away from poured resin, Christmas Village stuff. A fruitless task, as various donators, have, as Loyal Readers will've noticed, over the years, given me several of the things, while others have snuck in from mixed evilBay or Charity shop lots, so I crumbled completely this year and bought two Lemax figurines . . . Then another one! In my defence, they were much cheaper than the others on the pegs, and were clearly dated as old stock.

 

It was the Bavarian barmaid with six foaming Steins that did it for me, and with an equally cheap snowman, it just sort of happened while I wasn't paying attention, and suddenly, they were mine! She's dated 2014, the snowman's date is a little odder, and a little older, at 1099! Clearly, snowmen were a Norman practice, brought to these shores by William and his wicked Barons!

 

I went back a couple of weeks later, and this Lemax 'Mrs. Miggins' and her mince-pies (I think we're actually looking at Mrs. Clause!) had appeared on the hook where the Dirndl girl had been, a while earlier, and also older stock (2019), I thought she had to join the existing pair! For those not familiar with these, if they still look expensive to you, the surrounding others were starting at £4.99 and £5.99!

F is for Festive Finger Friends!

Getting very close to the sharpest point of what's acceptable on the blog, or within the collection, but, it IS Christmas, they ARE Figural, and it's a bit of fun in a darkening world!

 

I picked up a load of stuff from Peter Evans the other day, but it was owed quite a bit on the shekels-front, so it'll mostly be filtered away into the archive/collection, against future use as 'my stuff', rather than being labelled as contribution, however, there were several items which Peter had obviously grabbed or saved for me, so he'll get credit for them, and this is another of them!

 

Festive Finger Puppets!

Certainly a figural sub-genre or category, and not the first time we've found room for finger-puppets here, they are - again - ideal Christmas stocking-fillers for younger kids, and it's a non-electronic form of imagination stretching, to make up and act out stories in a theatrical fashion. And, it's the second time Peter has found a Gem Imports thing, so many thanks to him, for finding this!

Y is for Yule Lads!

It's always fun finding out how other people do Christmas, because it's not all the modern iconography of Albert, Prince-consort, The Saxe-Coburg-Windsors or Coke Cola, endured by the English-speaking world, with or without crackers! And I well remember nearly having a fight with Krampus and his 'pals' in an Austrian pension one cold night in December!

 

In Iceland, they have the Yule Lads, a bunch of Icelandic Troll types (more to come on them), who fool about at this time of year, each having a day between the 12th and the 24th, in the lead-up to the big day, almost an half-advent of annoyance! Brian Berke, roving reporter, sent some shots he took in Iceland, and off down the rabbit-hole I went!

 

They actually leave little gifts in children's shoes, the equivalent of our stockings, but lesser, yet daily! However, if you've been bad, you might get a rotten potato, or a sour-onion!

 

This is Pottaskefill (Pot-Scraper, December 16th), he scrapes the food remains from the pots and pans!

 

While Skyrgámur (Skyr-Gobbler, December 19th) loves skyr (Icelandic traditional yogurt-type dairy-produce), and if you don't leave some out for him, he'll just steal it!

 

Ketkrókur (Meat-Hook, December 23th), he steals meat, gripping it with a hook! Another steals sausages!

 

Þvörusleikir (Spoon-Licker, December 15th), he steals spoons to lick them clean, but there isn’t much food left on spoons, so he is supposed to be scrawny, this one looks well-accommodated with bounteous spoons! Presumably, the spoons quietly reappear in the drawers when little people have forgotten them?

 

You'll have to Google the rest yourselves! And there are a couple of equally (supposedly) execrable parents and a dodgy cat! Many thanks to Brian for the introduction, to something completely different!

S&S is for Seasonal and Superb

Brian has sent his seasonal shots of Scully & Scully's window display, he said he was fighting refelction, but they all look good to me, and as we all know what's coming, we don't need any more of my waffle; enjoy!

 

Many thanks to Mr. Berke for these, it's an unpaid mission, to fight the New York shopping crowd, and get these images, not just at Easter or Halloween, but especially at this time of year, and they are the most exquisite examples of the slate-etcher's art, even if, these days, they are cold cast rubber, or even metal moulds? And they are beautifully painted as well, a real treat Brain, thank you. It's starting to feel very festive!

H is for Haskins Circus Baubles

I thought I'd posted these a week or three ago - I hadn't! A very themed collection of Circus baubles, to be found at the Haskins garden centre, between Farnham and Borden, not my thing, simply because there's too many themes and items already, but if I was just setting out on life's journey and had a tree to fill with memories, or a theme, I would be tempted!

 

They are mostly Gisela Graham so can be found elsewhere, both Redfields and Longacre had a few, but only Haskins seems to have A) ordered the whole line and B) ordered similar stuff from other sources and hung them all together.

 

A rather poor shot, or hurried-shot, I took of a hedgehog I left on the hook. I didn't like the landscaped base, it's basically a shelf-ornament converted into a tree-ornament, which is a bit naff on at least two levels, so it stayed where it was - there's definitely a 'personal' snobbery to ornament selecting!

R is for Retro Kitsch

The theme we've been revisiting all year, in fact the initial post was last autumn, so it's been over a year! NASA-type astronauts of a cartoony design with rockets of a retro, playroom wallpaper style! TKmaxx seasonal shelfies, I took these weeks ago, and I think they're all sold out now, not something I'd give house-room to, but a fun addition to the trend.
