About Me

I’m a 60-year-old Aspergic gardening CAD-Monkey. Sardonic, cynical and with the political leanings of a social reformer, I’m also a toy and model figure collector, particularly interested in the history of plastics and plastic toys. Other interests are history, current affairs, modern art, and architecture, gardening and natural history. I love plain chocolate, fireworks and trees, but I don’t hug them, I do hug kittens. I hate ignorance, when it can be avoided, so I hate the 'educational' establishment and pity the millions they’ve failed with teaching-to-test and rote 'learning' and I hate the short-sighted stupidity of the entire ruling/industrial elite, with their planet destroying fascism and added “buy-one-get-one-free”. Likewise, I also have no time for fools and little time for the false crap we're all supposed to pretend we haven't noticed, or the games we're supposed to play. I will 'bite the hand that feeds', to remind it why it feeds.

Y is for Yule Lads!

It's always fun finding out how other people do Christmas, because it's not all the modern iconography of Albert, Prince-consort, The Saxe-Coburg-Windsors or Coke Cola, endured by the English-speaking world, with or without crackers! And I well remember nearly having a fight with Krampus and his 'pals' in an Austrian pension one cold night in December!

In Iceland, they have the Yule Lads, a bunch of Icelandic Troll types (more to come on them), who fool about at this time of year, each having a day between the 12th and the 24th, in the lead-up to the big day, almost an half-advent of annoyance! Brian Berke, roving reporter, sent some shots he took in Iceland, and off down the rabbit-hole I went!

They actually leave little gifts in children's shoes, the equivalent of our stockings, but lesser, yet daily! However, if you've been bad, you might get a rotten potato, or a sour-onion!

This is Pottaskefill (Pot-Scraper, December 16th), he scrapes the food remains from the pots and pans!

While Skyrgámur (Skyr-Gobbler, December 19th) loves skyr (Icelandic traditional yogurt-type dairy-produce), and if you don't leave some out for him, he'll just steal it!

Ketkrókur (Meat-Hook, December 23th), he steals meat, gripping it with a hook! Another steals sausages!

Þvörusleikir (Spoon-Licker, December 15th), he steals spoons to lick them clean, but there isn’t much food left on spoons, so he is supposed to be scrawny, this one looks well-accommodated with bounteous spoons! Presumably, the spoons quietly reappear in the drawers when little people have forgotten them?

You'll have to Google the rest yourselves! And there are a couple of equally (supposedly) execrable parents and a dodgy cat! Many thanks to Brian for the introduction, to something completely different!

F is for Follow-up - Speedwell & Co - Walls, Sandbags and Rocks

I said the other day that I'd misplaced both the Speedwell 'master' tub and the spares bag . . .

21st Century; Battlefield Accessories; Benbros Scenics; Charbens Scenic; Charbens Toys; Cherilea Plastic Scenery; Cherilea Toy Scenics; Earthworks; Emplacements; Entrenchments; Kentoy Scenics; Kentoys; Revettments; Sandbag Defence; Scenic Accessories; Scenic Model; Scenic Model Photography; Scenic Models; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Speedwell; Speedwell - Trojan; Speedwell Scenics; Timpo Scenic Model; Timpo Toys; Trojan Scenics; Una - VP; Una Scenics; Unimax; VP - Speedwell; VP Scenics; VP Toy Soldiers;
. . . well, the spares bag is in the foreground here, the master-tub is to the right, the stuff we looked at the other day is mostly in the rear centre tub with the little walls in their own carded bag. Another bag of bits is to the left and the box - the missing bits all turned-up in - had a few other bits for this or the next Post, so the follow-up has come more rapidly than I imagined it would the other day!

The 'Speedwell' master-tubs contents, unlike other Speedwell scenics these are all unmarked, and further, in the catalogue used by Plastic Warrior magazine they are separately listed under farm and military groupings, but these all came together as - presumably - ex-shop stock with the ones in the spares bag, in two shades of red, but the same three mouldings in the darker maroon-red (were the three on the same tool?), the rest in a flat red.

The one bottom-centre, seems to be a doorway blocked with a hay-bale and along with the lapped-fence (middle-right) is unlisted, but as you can see; are both painted in the same pale-green and came in the same large, 'mint' batch.

Note - the church-door, broken gate/corner and hay-pile weren't in the [sizable] sample, so could they also be on a single mould-tool, not used the day my 'order' was made-up and shipped-out?

[And if anyone has swaps of those three, I have most of the others, mint to near mint in the bag of spares, happy to do a one-for-one swap - eMail me]

Contemporary offering from Timpo Toys, a two-part, plug-together, corner piece, which; judging from the number of small holes in it provides little or no protection for troops or sheltering civilians - cinder-blocks!

These are modern I think - a sort of stiff-but-bendy PVC type material, possibly 21st Century or Unimax? The two larger pieces are identical, they can be braced in either of two positions, either side (dotted lines) to make a verity of ruins or a single piece, the sandbag emplacements are the same - slightly-bendy - stuff.

We looked at two of these the other week, and I said they couldn't be Speedwell because of the loopholes, well, the Speedwell is on the right (upper image), and a copy has turned up, I've pencilled Trojan in as it's too glossy for the chalky production of Kentoy or UNA/VP, but could be any of them or someone else?

Along with the Charbens (really a dry-stone wall, but with loop-holes) another two smooth-backed copies have also turned-up, both with a gloss-green grass highlight in paint. And; to be honest, they both look like they were made yesterday in China! I'm not sugegsting they were, the other one (top centre) looks 'Early British' production - but they are very clean, and presumably also ex-shop stock, or very un-played-with?

Hillco shell-crater on the left, unknown pile of rocks on the right, might be Gemodels, but not known to be, and the sort of thing all sort of people would throw in a window-boxed set for visual effect?

21st Century; Battlefield Accessories; Benbros Scenics; Charbens Scenic; Charbens Toys; Cherilea Plastic Scenery; Cherilea Toy Scenics; Earthworks; Emplacements; Entrenchments; Kentoy Scenics; Kentoys; Revettments; Sandbag Defence; Scenic Accessories; Scenic Model; Scenic Model Photography; Scenic Models; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Speedwell; Speedwell - Trojan; Speedwell Scenics; Timpo Scenic Model; Timpo Toys; Trojan Scenics; Una - VP; Una Scenics; Unimax; VP - Speedwell; VP Scenics; VP Toy Soldiers;
Likewise this; the clue here, such as it is, is the little ears either side of the main product moulding, which would have either located in slots in the card base of a boxed-set, or have been used to tie-down, with thread or elastic. Some Charbens pieces have similar 'ears' but they are less obvious or geometrical?

12 is for Days of Christmas - Day Twelve

That's it I'm afraid, we've come to the end of the images! On the left of the shelf are a few of the many animals issued over the years, then the Vikings with some of the less common and 'one-off' steckfiguren in front and the big goggle-eyed robots I remember from eggs in the late 1980's

To the right we have a nice tower, a Viking 'egg' and the Afro-Polynesian/Alien-Amerindian eggs! Another set which used the casing as part of the toy, these (the casing sections) tend to have holes, catches and/or slots specific to the contents of each toy so can be much harder to build from odd parts harvested from evilBay.

And - many thanks to Francesco Ferretti for sharing this set of images with the Blog, if you'd like to be swap-mates with Francesco get in touch with me and I'll pass your email on to him.

12 is for Days of Christmas - Day Eleven

Back to construction vehicles, a whole grid of F1 racers (one of the Spanish or Turkish chocolate egg issuers had a similar set), an equal number of dragsters and the very hard to find micro-AFV's.

12 is for Days of Christmas - Day Ten

Yesterday's archers from the other side, the simple two-part knights who were nice but rather relaxed poses and the wacky 'clip-together' figures. Behind them, not so clear are the smaller Samurai, also simple mouldings.

12 is for Days of Christmas - Day Nine

Two of the most sought after series of all the steckfiguren, the Samurai - which I've never been that impressed by - as sculpts they are clumsy, but they look quite stunning en-mass, and the Renaissance archers who are some of the best figures they made.

12 is for Days of Christmas - Day Eight

The other half of yesterday's shelf has my favourites; motorcycles - I'm familiar with most of them but I don't recall the 'bat-bikes' at the rear-right?

12 is for Days of Christmas - Day Seven

More construction vehicles, 4x4's and family saloon-cars, I think it's fair to say green is less than common for the construction vehicles!

12 is for Days of Christmas - Day Six

Kinder meets Disney, these are among the easier to locate, but the toys that use the [non-standard] container as a part of the toy are less common.

12 is for Days of Christmas - Day Five

More Jeeps! A whole field of four-by-fours, kubels, dune-buggies and utes! You can see the gaps Mr. Ferretti is trying to fill, if you think you can help eMail me and I'll get you both in touch.

12 is for Days of Christmas - Day Four

More steckfiguren, more Indians, more aliens and some monsters, the little cartoony horse-riders, cartoony knights and the best versions of astronauts.

Thursday, December 28, 2017

12 is for Days of Christmas - Day Three

Steckfiguren - Cowboys, Indians, Mexicans, backwoodsmen workmen, alien-robots and both sides in the American Civil War, a stunning vista!

12 is for Days of Christmas - Day Two

More vehicles, I've always liked the grand tourers (front, center-right) as they make useful staff-cars for 1:76th scale figures, but who knew there were so many Jeeps!

12 is for "On the twelfth Day of Chrissssstmaaas, His True Love Sent to Hiiiiiiimmm . . ."

. . . FIVE FUGGIN SNOWMEN!

Gina had rung-in sick and was still at his when the replacement-driver turned-up on the doorstep with a van-load of refrigerated snow. Luckily the guy was a mate of hers, so the three of them rigged up a pallet truck from a trolley-jack and an old door and they soon had them off the wagon.

Once the other driver had gone they switched all the refrigerated stands off and Gina gave him a lift to the town hall.

He got an injunction out against his 'ex'-true love sending anything larger than a matchbox to within 5 miles of his postcode and then on the way back they stopped at Gina's place to pick up a few bags of clothes and the cat . . .

. . . all's well that ends well, and everything ends in the end - hope you all had a lovely Christmas.

===============================================================

I think we've seen these before? I can't find the magazine shots anyway, it was a set of snowman skittles on a kid's comic/periodical I bought a couple of Christmases ago, the trouble is even the tag-list is starting to show holes as we motor-away from sixteen-hundred posts!

11 is for "On the eleventh Day of Chrissssstmaaas, His True Love Sent to Hiiiiiiimmm . . ."

. . . 2 bloody Snowmen?!!

 Now OK; admittedly, they were both small, but two of them? This is getting a bit odd now.

What with Gina and him getting pretty 'merry' the night before she'd been late to work and by the time they'd unloaded them (did I say they come on a refrigerated pallet, well they do, they're a bugger to handle!) they were both in a bit of a state so he offered her the use of his shower and, well, one thing led to another...she needed someone to wash her back and he didn't want to get his clothes wet...she popped back to her place in the afternoon; to pick-up a toothbrush and feed the cat!

===============================================================

Two odd's in this post, an erzgebirge type tree hanger and a mini-snowman on skates, both unknown and smaller than the others we've been seeing!

The wooden set was a cheepie from somewhere like Lidl, Aldi or even one of the pound-a-like shops?

10 is for "On the tenth Day of Chrissssstmaaas, His True Love Sent to Hiiiiiiimmm . . .

. . . Whaaaaat  -  Eeehhh'Hevvv-VEurrr"

Gina and he laughed, unloaded and they went down the pub . . . again . . . !

===============================================================

 Unknown resin snowman and Santa's that I think we've already looked at here - sorry!

9 is for "On the Ninth Day of Chrissssstmaaas, His True Love Sent to Hiiiiiiimmm . . .

. . . Snow-ma-a-a-ann Num-beeeerrr Niiiine!"

Gina was late this morning; they'd rather 'hung one on' in a little bar where everyone else seemed a lot younger and more vigorous! But they had fun . . .

===============================================================

Culpitt's again, but larger, in older packaging and a styrene polymer, also issued in unmarked grab-bags from display-bins as generics!
