J is for Jährliche Osterhasenparade

Did you anticipate this post? I'd totally forgotten . . . again! But Brian Berke has done one of his regular photo-essays for us, by heading down to Scully & Scully, at 54 Park Avenue, an address, to Americophiles, as prestigious or exciting, as something on the Avenue des Champs-Élysées would be to a Francophile, or Park Lane to an Anglophile! And why has it taken me nearly a decade to look that up?

 

Brian had real problems with reflection this time, hence two visits were called for, and he even tried different cameras, and while I've done what I can with cropping and contrast, you can see a camera in three or four of them, and I cropped the mice out of a larger image, so that one is a bit fuzzy, because they were background!

 

As always, the sculpts, and their painting are exquisite, and while we've seen some of them before, it's all new painting, and/or some new vignettes, along with new trees, I think. I didn't reject any of the images, so there's a bit of duplication.

 

Nothing else to add, as they are a perennial here, now, so please enjoy a bit of Easter magic from the Big Apple.

C is for Clone Charlies, Charly Clones, Charly's Clones?

I muttered about clearing some of the capsule toy backlog, and while not strictly capsule toys, unless the Kinder variant, these are . . . were (!) in the same section of Picasa and can go first! Dulcop's line Super Charly and his cousins.

 

These are half-and-half mine and Internet scrapings, and in the order they joined the folder, some have been seen before, I think, in a show-plunder post, but it's a better overview!

 

A lot on evilBay back in '21, which I meant to bid on, but either didn't, or failed to win, I can't remember now. Obviously from Soviet-era Eastern Europe, and bilingual, is it Polish and Russian? Hungarian/Bulgarian? Out-and-out copies.

 

Also from Eastern Europe, this was a Sandown Park jobbie, I think, last year sometime, again, a straight-up copy of Dulcop's American Indians, and which kicked-off the next few comparison shots. He's lost a feather from his headdress, and a bow.

 

I first became aware of SMĚR, just after the 'Wall' came down, when they started shipping copies of old Viking ship models into the west, here, to the UK, via Pocketbond, but these would have probably remained something more domestic, in Czechoslovakia, whether they are now Czech or Slovakian, I have no idea!

 

Mine, on the left, possibly a Hong Kong copy, I think he's supposed to be a medic, I'm not sure why he has a walkie-talkie? Dulcop original US Cavalryman from feeBay on the right. The Eastern copies, both from SMĚR and the unknown packs, have button noses, Dulcop, Kinder and Hong Kong pirates have rounded m-noses, like little piggy-wigs!

 

The lot which I think we've seen before, these are the sub-scale Kinder, probably under licence from Dulcop, or somebody with a Dulcop licence like CGGC/Grisoni? Above shot shows six complete figures, below shot, the 'bits  pieces', but with a bag of bits in the old storage lot, there should be a future coming together of parts to make more 'wholes'!

So I felt I should add some actual Dunlop examples, and grabbed these off feebleBay not that long ago, two larger boxed sets of cowboys and Indians, and a smaller single-figure window-box of a confederate soldier, with hidden horse and cactus, and illustrations of several others, foot & mounted, on the back. Accessories are mostly from the standard 54mm figure range.

I is for It's Another One!

Peter Evans sent us a football set! No, not another take on the large set we've looked at about five times now, or more, and no, not the smaller version, which, as a complete set, remain elusive, but a wholly new set, with some of the elements of the other two!

 

 

How he found them, in a generic shipping bag, of the crinkly, cellulose-something variety! Two goals, cupping (or 'netting'! I'll get me coat!) the players, as they do in the bags of the larger set.

 

 

Three-a-side, with a referee, smaller than the other two sets, around 40mm, with new poses, but the same hard polystyrene material, and separate green-plastic bases, although loose with these, glued-on in the case of the previously seen sets.

Detail on the figures is poor, but it just shows - if you look around, there's still lots of this stuff out there, I know cake decorations or novelty figures aren't everyone's cup of tea, and they certainly aren't 'toy' or 'model' soldiers, but it's out there!

There are two cups, so, in these politically-correct times -  both players can win!

R is for Real Odds & Sods

The folder is called 'Odds & Sods'! I found it languishing in 2023, and all or some of it may have been seen here at Small Scale World already, all or most of it may be from a Sandown park show (some definitely is), most or a few bits may be from a visit to a friend's house, and bits but not all or most may have been a "Found these, if you want them" type donation in passing!

 

A large Indian, probably Tudor Rose, but others did do such figures and I haven't looked it up, scaled with a Kellogg's/Crescent ringmaster, to reveal the 90/100mm size of it.

 

Some of this is in the next shot, so definitely a Sandown or part Sandown lot, with highlights including all four Lone Star Wild West children and the bear-fighting backwoodsman (who can also fight the corresponding Indian, who can also fight the bear!), I remember posting the good Doctor Thadeus P. Tripp and his hidden bottles, from Timpo, while two Belgian composition stick-out at the back.

 

Posted a variation of this at the time, definitely Sandown, and fully covered somewhere? The Taxi went on to another home. We've since also seen a colour variation of the racing car, Rosedale I think, and possibly three in the collection now?

 

Not sure if I've posted these before? The Plasty ACW Union soldier is grist to the mill, but the Lone Star 60mm swoppet is a very different beast, it's the only one I've got, I've probably never seen the whole set, except in an article somewhere, and they are very hard to find, not least as they are getting brittle (my base is going), so a nice find!

 

A handful type donation? Three blow-moulds, two Japanese novelties, maybe Christmas cracker prizes in 'styrene, and a larger bear, probably Hong Kong and possibly once flocked, although that would mean somebody added the eyes after the flocking had come off? An acid-etched (or acid matted) pug-dog in poured/moulded-glass is a fun find, and some other odds and sods!

 

Two French figures on the left? Historical characters? Rural dress/regional stereotypes? Or just from a large wagon model-kit? A Marx dog, from the Hong Kong arm, in Warriors of the World style, possibly? And a Marx TV Tinykin definitely!

 

Prone to laying about; the Marx nude as a re-issue, a fallen but still fighting African Native from Elastolin, apparently not rare, as a whole sack-load or two were found when the factory closed-down, and one of several similar 'tied-to-a-tree' figures from various European manufacturers, and I never know which is which - Jean, Manurba/Heinerle, Dom, Texas, Hugonnet?

 

Kinder (technically; Marajà) Zorro, incomplete, but I already have three different colour variations, complete, with others still on the runner, so just useful spares, a Spanish (or Argentine copy?) horse, for which a rider may already be waiting in the pile, and one of these odd artillerymen, we saw here;

Eight years ago! Where does the time go?

T is for Teixido Return!

Yes, a rather too-cheerful title given my views of bullfighting, but they have to be posted, and while I hate the 'sport' and the idea of it still being a thing in the 21st Century, I take heart in the fact that another Matador was gored to death the other day (at least he got to feel how the bulls felt), and two others have quit, publically, in the ring! One breaking down and sobbing, at the enormity of what he'd been doing, all his adult life, to innocent, proud, confused animals.

 

We'll start at the end . . . of the bull. It's all about the killing of bulls, and, the longer the fight, the weaker the bull gets, so the final flourish, and the applause of the bloodthirsty crowd is utterly pointless, as the bull's so weak by that point it's almost a mercy killing, for what the fighters have been doing for the previous . . . twenty minutes; hour; two hours? I don't care how long the fights take, they are barbarous.

 

These are the Teixido figures (I think? They may go with the Jecsan below?) we last saw on someone else's table with me pointing out I didn't have any, I now have a decent sample, and we're going to look at them now, along with a few others, that have come-in over the last couple of years!

 

Two more mounted figures which I think go with the Teixido set, but I'm not sure, some of them are more rubbery, others are 'ethylene, and while some have separate arms, others don't! And all the horses were polyethylene, but not all the riders went on all the horses!

 

Theses are all Teixido, and there was some judicial swapping of arms, between shots, to get everyone looking correct, and a few bodies didn't get photographed as their arms clearly weren't here! The last one is correct, I think, but the camera-angle makes him look like his plug-in arm is growing out of his back!

 

The guy on the right in the first shot, can be posed to be dragging his red-rag behind him, as we saw last time we looked at these. 

 

I think these are all Jecsan, although one has a more Reamsa style base, so I stand to be better informed on all these, but the whole 'bullfighting zone' sample is quite big now, and when it's all brought together we'll have a proper look at all of them, and compare with the various catalogue images in the archive, to get them all grouped correctly! In fact, I think the standing bull is the Teixido.

 

Jecsan horse, I think, not sure on the rider, who seems to be some kind of referee or officiator? He has a separate cloak, so may also be Teixido.

 

Comparison between a Comansi (?), unknown, unpainted one (which keeps turning up and may be a touristy thing?) and the Teixido horse, his padded-armour/blanketing is of finer etching/sculpting.

 

Jecsan with a Reamsa'ish base, a tourist keepsake, we saw another one (white, plug-on base), years ago, and one of the Teixido's. The tourist one is a polystyrene, hard-plastic solid, with metal pin inserted.

 

Further comparison, with the Torres wine premium on the left and one of the unknown small-scales from 2024's Plastic Warrior show plunder on the right, for some reason I swapped out the Teixido but not the Jecasn?

Seen before, but cropped-tight and lacking the now-dead link to the auction!

 

I had the Jecsan stuff here, but the Comansi and Reamsa stuff is in storage, or on a dongle I can't be bothered to look for, right now! The reamsa'ish base one is it the ring, facing the other way, so he is Jecsan, but no sign of the towing vignette, the Referee, or a dead bull, so that probably is all Teixido after all!

 

While the two we saw yesterday aren't in these scans, so probably are Reamsa, as the Comansi's have bigger bases - it's not made any easier by them all four using the same gloss orange on the bases! I guess, after a thousand years, all that bull's blood has darkened the sand?

Imagine if these colourful, dynamic, civilian figures could still be collected, but as 'historical' subjects, rather than examples of man's ongoing cruelty, and inhumanity to everything around him?
