I’m a 60-year-old Aspergic gardening CAD-Monkey. Sardonic, cynical and with the political leanings of a social reformer, I’m also a toy and model figure collector, particularly interested in the history of plastics and plastic toys. Other interests are history, current affairs, modern art, and architecture, gardening and natural history. I love plain chocolate, fireworks and trees, but I don’t hug them, I do hug kittens. I hate ignorance, when it can be avoided, so I hate the 'educational' establishment and pity the millions they’ve failed with teaching-to-test and rote 'learning' and I hate the short-sighted stupidity of the entire ruling/industrial elite, with their planet destroying fascism and added “buy-one-get-one-free”. Likewise, I also have no time for fools and little time for the false crap we're all supposed to pretend we haven't noticed, or the games we're supposed to play. I will 'bite the hand that feeds', to remind it why it feeds.

R is for Really, Really Rare . . . Not!

Having inadvertently used TJF and Master Sprecher ('they started it') to push the blog over the five-million hits, back in August, or whenever, I thought it would be fun to use this series of five corrective posts to get us over the third-best-year finish-line!

There's this guy, we'll call him the Man with Three Names, for it is he, who keeps posting the same stuff on a Faceplant group, over and over again, I mean seven times since lockdown, for most of it!

One of the things he keeps posting, and he's just posted it again, is his 'rare' colours of Marksman ACW, courtesy of the late John 'Marx Man' Stengel. Making statements such as;

"Some of these colors were test shots and were never publicly released"

"When he was deciding which colors to run the molds in..."

". . . in about 7 different colors, including 3 or 4 test shot colors, that were never produced."

"Some of these are "test shot" colors, that John was considering producing."

"They were a reject for mass marketing."

But it's all bollocks! I don't know whether he's trying to impress all the other members of the group, or just all the North American members of the group, but it's all bollocks!

Let me explain . . . I now have 12 colours, these have all come in, in mixed lots, off of that intermahweb-thingy, where other colours remain to be found, by me, other people have already found them! Marksmen, back in the day were a small two-man outfit, Peter Coles (now of Replicants) who designed and mastered the figures, and got the moulds produced and Mike Ellis, the office-end, who dealt with Rado Industries (Ri-Toys) in Hong Kong (Marx reissues), Mr Stengel and other clients around the world, and ran the stand at toy soldier shows.

Each run of the tools, was what the 'garage firm' could afford, and while some colours were more official than others, they were all available at the shows, I remember them piled-up on Mike's table for years afterward, and they regularly appear on feeBay, from whence I got mine in two lots a year or two ago.

While the idea Peter would let his moulds go to the US, and trust them to come back, is rather risible!

Now, one shouldn't speak ill of the dead, but there is a possibility the late Mr. Stengel Senior (whom our reprobate keeps spelling with an 'a', suggesting he didn't know him as well as he claims to have) might have embellished his own position in, or contribution to, the Marksmen story.

But this endless re-poster, of the tale at hand, also has a history of not paying for his advertising, trying to get people kicked-off Facebook Groups with such convoluted lies, he eventually manages to destroy his case, trying to prove the truth, by inadvertently showing the lie (a story for another day, maybe), and, was only today, admitting to pirating Helmet, which may or may not have had a role in one of their demises, so I tend to think he's probably bullshitting for effect? And he keeps referring to a 'Peter Ellis' in his posts on the subject, suggesting he knows the subject no better than he knew Mr. Stengel, with an 'e'!

It's the same in the small-scale, where there were 'officially' four colours, but actually six or seven are kicking around, due to each batch often being a different shade, even if it wasn't an officially 'new' colour.

And - as far as I know - Action Casting, the firm currently owned by John Stengel Junior, don't have and never has had, the Marksmen ACW moulds?

And that's it, finishing with five posts in a row, correcting some of the crap out there - it's the third-best year, ever, for posts, here at Small Scale World. Which, given some of the shit which has come my way in recent months, is a major achievement! Anything which posts between now and Monday night is a bonus, we won't get close to the other two year's totals!

M is for Marx's Mardy Misses

Or; technically, W is for Wild Western Women, as two of them aren't Marx! And several are re-issues.

As loyal readers know I didn't start collecting large scale (apart from a composition Cossack, Tim Mee Jap' and a couple of hollow-cast on display in my old kitchen) until after I started the blog back in 2009/10, so I've only been at this 'full-on' malarkey for a decade, but I seem to have picked-up a few Wild West women and when I was sorting the Wild West a couple'o months ago, I shot some of them together before splitting them up.

54mm Dale Evans; 60mm; 60mm Ranch Cowboys; Barzo Play Set; Barzo Playsets; Calamity Jane; Dale Evans; Female Cowboys; Female Set; Female Wild West Figures; Jeunesse Premiums; Koch und Hofmockel; Koho 70mm; Marx; Marx 60mm; Marx 60mm Cowgirl; Marx Dale Evans - Roy Rogers Re-issue; Marx Swansea; Marx Town; PVC Vinyl-Rubber; Rado; Ri-Toys; Ron Baszo; Roy Rogers Playsets; Roy Rogers Polyethylene; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Special Town Play Sets; Town Sets; Townswoman; Wild West; Wild West Women;
Not only are they mostly Marx, they are mostly Dale Evans . . . how boring! No, but several of them are, and from the left we have;

Marx 60mm Dale Evans - Roy Rogers [early] Playsets - PVC vinyl-rubber*
Marx 54mm Dale Evans - Roy Rogers [late] Playsets - polyethylene, earlier, painted
Marx 54mm Dale Evans - Roy Rogers [late] Playsets - polyethylene, re-issue
Marx 54mm Dale Evans - Roy Rogers [late] Playsets - polyethylene, re-issue
Koho 70mm Calamity Jane - polyethylene, early, painted
Marksmen 60mm - ex-Marx Town - polyethylene re-issue (via Rado/Ri-Toys)
Marx 60mm Townswoman - Town sets - chalky polyethylene (Swansea?)
Marx 60mm Cowgirl - Ranch Cowboys - polyethylene (re-issue?)**
Marx 60mm Cowgirl - Special Town + Sets - PVC vinyl-rubber (paint may be home-added)

*early version, later mouldings had an added base/stand
** I don't know what she's supposed to ride but she fits several of my hippo's and a extra-large lion!

54mm Dale Evans; 60mm; 60mm Ranch Cowboys; Barzo Play Set; Barzo Playsets; Calamity Jane; Dale Evans; Female Cowboys; Female Set; Female Wild West Figures; Jeunesse Premiums; Koch und Hofmockel; Koho 70mm; Marx; Marx 60mm; Marx 60mm Cowgirl; Marx Dale Evans - Roy Rogers Re-issue; Marx Swansea; Marx Town; PVC Vinyl-Rubber; Rado; Ri-Toys; Ron Baszo; Roy Rogers Playsets; Roy Rogers Polyethylene; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Special Town Play Sets; Town Sets; Townswoman; Wild West; Wild West Women;
I also have this poor casualty, and she's a casualty twice-over having been apparently sculpted as a casualty, and then lost a hand and a foot due to the brittleness of the material coupled with rough handling!

I am assuming she's a [Ron] Barzo piece, being sculpted in a two-part epoxy/PU-resin, but she could be a garage/aftermarket or home-sculpted piece? If Barzo she may be a one-per-box from one from his big boxed play sets? Not that she is definitely Wild West even; he did many other 'horse & musket' periods/theatres including pirates?

54mm Dale Evans; 60mm; 60mm Ranch Cowboys; Barzo Play Set; Barzo Playsets; Calamity Jane; Dale Evans; Female Cowboys; Female Set; Female Wild West Figures; Jeunesse Premiums; Koch und Hofmockel; Koho 70mm; Marx; Marx 60mm; Marx 60mm Cowgirl; Marx Dale Evans - Roy Rogers Re-issue; Marx Swansea; Marx Town; PVC Vinyl-Rubber; Rado; Ri-Toys; Ron Baszo; Roy Rogers Playsets; Roy Rogers Polyethylene; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Special Town Play Sets; Town Sets; Townswoman; Wild West; Wild West Women;
In the searching for the Koho (Koch und Hofmockel) babe's details I managed to ID two others, both from the smaller 54mm line, and after this shot was taken a yellow 60mm Indian with lance turned-up, along with another 54mm cowboy, same pose, so; another growing corner of the collection!

Some cruder-looking versions of the 54mm were issued in France as premiums by Jeunesse, who are still going in the health & beauty market which makes the issue of Wild West figures a strange promotion in any age, you'd expect something like costume dolls from the sexism that drove 1950/60's marketing; maybe they launched an aftershave or men's deodorant, or something like that? Kid's bubble-bath or toothpaste?

E is for Esoteric

If Airfix and Deetail are too 'clean' or Lido too 'Toy' for your liking, while Atlantic may be too big or Esci too small, then what the hell are we supposed to make of this set? Marx's first entry into the British infantry field, was not as pleasing as the latter 54mm sextuplet, and that's for sure! But there is good and bad, useful and not so useful.

Marksmen; Marksmen British Infantry; Marx 8th Army; Marx 8th Army Figures; Marx 8th Army Toy Soldiers; Marx Army Men; Marx British Infantry; Marx British Soldiers; Marx British Troops; Marx Figures; Marx Soldiers of all Nations; Marx Soldiers of the World; Marx Toy Soldiers; Marx Toys; Marx Vintage Toys; Marx Warriors of the World; Rado Industries; Ri-Toys; Ri-Toys British Infantry; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Soldiers of all Nations; Soldiers of the World; Vintage Plastic Figures; Vintage Plastic Soldiers; Vintage Toy Figures; Vintage Toy Soldiers; Warriors of the Nations; Warriors Of The World; WWI British Infantry; WWII Toy Soldiers;
My sample is half-and-half Warriors of the World originals and Rado Industries (Ri-Toys) re-issues (which can be labelled Marksmen here in the UK), giving ten poses, but not all complete, due to the polystyrene of the originals being a tad frangible, and the figures over 60-years old?

My styrene officer has lost a thumb, but in war that's probably quite common, and once the stitches have been removed you may get sent back up the line, especially if you're right-handed and the problem is your left thumb, so he stays!

The pack on the grenade thrower is more inter-war period US Army, as is the 'bread-bag' (or is it supposed to be filled with Mills bombs?) but these are OK as 'toy' British WWII soldiers.

Marksmen; Marksmen British Infantry; Marx 8th Army; Marx 8th Army Figures; Marx 8th Army Toy Soldiers; Marx Army Men; Marx British Infantry; Marx British Soldiers; Marx British Troops; Marx Figures; Marx Soldiers of all Nations; Marx Soldiers of the World; Marx Toy Soldiers; Marx Toys; Marx Vintage Toys; Marx Warriors of the World; Rado Industries; Ri-Toys; Ri-Toys British Infantry; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Soldiers of all Nations; Soldiers of the World; Vintage Plastic Figures; Vintage Plastic Soldiers; Vintage Toy Figures; Vintage Toy Soldiers; Warriors of the Nations; Warriors Of The World; WWI British Infantry; WWII Toy Soldiers;
As are these, but one is clearly Home Guard or BEF (top left, damaged but I haven't tracked down a Marksmen replacement yet), another seems to be on the range (top right) while a third is in the Western Dessert (bottom right)! But - gasmask case with shorts = Mesopotamia, World War One! Bottom left has a couple of more reasonable poses though.

The standing firer has an - obviously - bent rifle, but I won't be trying to fix it, this old Marx polystyrene is getting very brittle now and complete figures are to be savoured, whatever their condition, not mucked-about with! Also, note the size difference (and sculpting) of the shooter and Tommy-gunner against the figures to their respective lefts.

Marksmen; Marksmen British Infantry; Marx 8th Army; Marx 8th Army Figures; Marx 8th Army Toy Soldiers; Marx Army Men; Marx British Infantry; Marx British Soldiers; Marx British Troops; Marx Figures; Marx Soldiers of all Nations; Marx Soldiers of the World; Marx Toy Soldiers; Marx Toys; Marx Vintage Toys; Marx Warriors of the World; Rado Industries; Ri-Toys; Ri-Toys British Infantry; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Soldiers of all Nations; Soldiers of the World; Vintage Plastic Figures; Vintage Plastic Soldiers; Vintage Toy Figures; Vintage Toy Soldiers; Warriors of the Nations; Warriors Of The World; WWI British Infantry; WWII Toy Soldiers;
Again, this guy is more BEF or even WWI'ish and appears to be wearing shoes! he's compared with the 'Britain' figure from the Soldiers of the World set (all marching) and another Frog RAF Regiment chap who's turned-up.

I've lost count of these Frog's now, I think I have nine, a set of four, and five duplicates in three poses? I keep meaning to start a swaps page, when I do they'll go up there, unless Chris Smith or Nazar want to add them to their wants' lists?

Marksmen; Marksmen British Infantry; Marx 8th Army; Marx 8th Army Figures; Marx 8th Army Toy Soldiers; Marx Army Men; Marx British Infantry; Marx British Soldiers; Marx British Troops; Marx Figures; Marx Soldiers of all Nations; Marx Soldiers of the World; Marx Toy Soldiers; Marx Toys; Marx Vintage Toys; Marx Warriors of the World; Rado Industries; Ri-Toys; Ri-Toys British Infantry; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Soldiers of all Nations; Soldiers of the World; Vintage Plastic Figures; Vintage Plastic Soldiers; Vintage Toy Figures; Vintage Toy Soldiers; Warriors of the Nations; Warriors Of The World; WWI British Infantry; WWII Toy Soldiers;
Another one which has survived damage and is from the desert, but Mesopotamia again, WWI again, not WWII! That's the trouble with these, they are from all over the place, and that's if you ignore the worst of the anachronistic equipment and the brown boots (please Louis; we've had black boots since . . . nearly forever!), yet they are undeniably charming toy soldiers, even as polypropylene or tinny ethylene re-issues! And the boots thing is inexplicable as they've got the charcoal helmets just right?

The other trio are the rest of the Soldiers of the World marching set, being Canada, Turkey and [South] Korea I think - I've put them away now! We looked at one the other day, another;  the Frenchman, when we looked at French stuff years ago and should have looked at the US ones a while back? The Canadian - in a tam' o-shanter (?) - has brought an elephant-gun to the parade!

Marksmen; Marksmen British Infantry; Marx 8th Army; Marx 8th Army Figures; Marx 8th Army Toy Soldiers; Marx Army Men; Marx British Infantry; Marx British Soldiers; Marx British Troops; Marx Figures; Marx Soldiers of all Nations; Marx Soldiers of the World; Marx Toy Soldiers; Marx Toys; Marx Vintage Toys; Marx Warriors of the World; Rado Industries; Ri-Toys; Ri-Toys British Infantry; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Soldiers of all Nations; Soldiers of the World; Vintage Plastic Figures; Vintage Plastic Soldiers; Vintage Toy Figures; Vintage Toy Soldiers; Warriors of the Nations; Warriors Of The World; WWI British Infantry; WWII Toy Soldiers;

R is for Robin's Roustabout Rebels - Part 2 - The Figures

I also grouped the earlier post's figures by character/thematically, for closer comparisons, and this post is the result of those shots, in the course of preparing this pair of articles, they all got put away and taken out again several times, and one of the archers has migrated to another set!

Alan-a-Dale, Archer, Australian Robin Hood, Australian Toy Figures, Bagged Toy Robin Hood, Blondel, Canada, Cereal Giveaways, Cereal Premium Robin Hood, Cereal Premiums, Derwent, Friar Tuck, Kellogg's Canada, Kellogg's Premiums, Kellogg's Robin Hood, Kellogg's Sugar Smacks, Little John, Maid Marion, Marksmen Robin Hood, Marx Figures, Marx Robin Hood, Marx Toy Soldiers, Marx Toys, Merry Men, Minstrel, Much the Miller, New Zealand Robin Hood, Post Cereals, Post Robin Hood, Premium Toy Figures, Premiums, Quentin, Rado Industries Robin Hood, Ri-Toys Robin Hood, Richard Green, Robin des Bois, Robin Hood, Robin of Loxley, Rubenstein Plastic Toys, Rubenstein Robin Hood, Rubenstein Toy Soldiers, Sheriff of Nottingham, Sherrif de Nottingham, Small Scale World, smallscaleworld.blogspot.com, Sugar Smacks Robin Hood, Timothy, Toy Minstrel Figure, Will Scarlet, Will Stutley,
Robin Hood's above and Will Scarlet's below, along with the guy I used to think was falling or sitting, but who I can only picture hiding in a tree now! The guy middle-bottom is an unnamed character - one of the Merry Men - but could pass for Robin or Will!

Now, there is no discernible difference between the two smaller Will's, and in the course of taking these mages I came to the conclusion I'd had the Down Under version all along, which means I need to find a Canada one at some point, just to satisfy myself as to their differences/similarities, as all the other figures do have clear differences between the sculpts and I believe the Canada issue is an unnamed figure?

Alan-a-Dale, Archer, Australian Robin Hood, Australian Toy Figures, Bagged Toy Robin Hood, Blondel, Canada, Cereal Giveaways, Cereal Premium Robin Hood, Cereal Premiums, Derwent, Friar Tuck, Kellogg's Canada, Kellogg's Premiums, Kellogg's Robin Hood, Kellogg's Sugar Smacks, Little John, Maid Marion, Marksmen Robin Hood, Marx Figures, Marx Robin Hood, Marx Toy Soldiers, Marx Toys, Merry Men, Minstrel, Much the Miller, New Zealand Robin Hood, Post Cereals, Post Robin Hood, Premium Toy Figures, Premiums, Quentin, Rado Industries Robin Hood, Ri-Toys Robin Hood, Richard Green, Robin des Bois, Robin Hood, Robin of Loxley, Rubenstein Plastic Toys, Rubenstein Robin Hood, Rubenstein Toy Soldiers, Sheriff of Nottingham, Sherrif de Nottingham, Small Scale World, smallscaleworld.blogspot.com, Sugar Smacks Robin Hood, Timothy, Toy Minstrel Figure, Will Scarlet, Will Stutley,
The Maid Marion/ian's; Marx's 'ian is Rubenesque sexy in a Viking-court sort of get-up, the antipodean 'ion is a bit Hippy-chick sexy in plain Anglo-Saxon villager's garb, the Canadian 'ian sculpt looks like a rather dry Mother Superior or a 'Flanders mare' in full Norman aristocratic finery and Robin would be a fool to get involved with her, she's just gonna' whine alot!

Alan-a-Dale, Archer, Australian Robin Hood, Australian Toy Figures, Bagged Toy Robin Hood, Blondel, Canada, Cereal Giveaways, Cereal Premium Robin Hood, Cereal Premiums, Derwent, Friar Tuck, Kellogg's Canada, Kellogg's Premiums, Kellogg's Robin Hood, Kellogg's Sugar Smacks, Little John, Maid Marion, Marksmen Robin Hood, Marx Figures, Marx Robin Hood, Marx Toy Soldiers, Marx Toys, Merry Men, Minstrel, Much the Miller, New Zealand Robin Hood, Post Cereals, Post Robin Hood, Premium Toy Figures, Premiums, Quentin, Rado Industries Robin Hood, Ri-Toys Robin Hood, Richard Green, Robin des Bois, Robin Hood, Robin of Loxley, Rubenstein Plastic Toys, Rubenstein Robin Hood, Rubenstein Toy Soldiers, Sheriff of Nottingham, Sherrif de Nottingham, Small Scale World, smallscaleworld.blogspot.com, Sugar Smacks Robin Hood, Timothy, Toy Minstrel Figure, Will Scarlet, Will Stutley,
'The Tuck'; my kind of priest - a godless one! I prefer the Marx sculpt, if he's got a staff he can get fightey-bitey, but the smaller ones have him holding a scroll or torch/brazier - it's not clear? This is the other pose (after the archer, if mine are of different sources) which has little change beyond base markings between Australian and Canadian issues - the Canada one is better detailed/etched and slightly taller maybe?

Alan-a-Dale, Archer, Australian Robin Hood, Australian Toy Figures, Bagged Toy Robin Hood, Blondel, Canada, Cereal Giveaways, Cereal Premium Robin Hood, Cereal Premiums, Derwent, Friar Tuck, Kellogg's Canada, Kellogg's Premiums, Kellogg's Robin Hood, Kellogg's Sugar Smacks, Little John, Maid Marion, Marksmen Robin Hood, Marx Figures, Marx Robin Hood, Marx Toy Soldiers, Marx Toys, Merry Men, Minstrel, Much the Miller, New Zealand Robin Hood, Post Cereals, Post Robin Hood, Premium Toy Figures, Premiums, Quentin, Rado Industries Robin Hood, Ri-Toys Robin Hood, Richard Green, Robin des Bois, Robin Hood, Robin of Loxley, Rubenstein Plastic Toys, Rubenstein Robin Hood, Rubenstein Toy Soldiers, Sheriff of Nottingham, Sherrif de Nottingham, Small Scale World, smallscaleworld.blogspot.com, Sugar Smacks Robin Hood, Timothy, Toy Minstrel Figure, Will Scarlet, Will Stutley,
The two sheriffs' (Nott's & Darby!) and tree-climber/falling guy again! He's actually the most dynamic pose of all four sets (I haven't shown/got the other Marx set), but this may have meant he was a bugger to manufacture - lots of weird undercuts, not in the pose per se, but in relation to the layout of the other cavities/rest of the tool?

Alan-a-Dale, Archer, Australian Robin Hood, Australian Toy Figures, Bagged Toy Robin Hood, Blondel, Canada, Cereal Giveaways, Cereal Premium Robin Hood, Cereal Premiums, Derwent, Friar Tuck, Kellogg's Canada, Kellogg's Premiums, Kellogg's Robin Hood, Kellogg's Sugar Smacks, Little John, Maid Marion, Marksmen Robin Hood, Marx Figures, Marx Robin Hood, Marx Toy Soldiers, Marx Toys, Merry Men, Minstrel, Much the Miller, New Zealand Robin Hood, Post Cereals, Post Robin Hood, Premium Toy Figures, Premiums, Quentin, Rado Industries Robin Hood, Ri-Toys Robin Hood, Richard Green, Robin des Bois, Robin Hood, Robin of Loxley, Rubenstein Plastic Toys, Rubenstein Robin Hood, Rubenstein Toy Soldiers, Sheriff of Nottingham, Sherrif de Nottingham, Small Scale World, smallscaleworld.blogspot.com, Sugar Smacks Robin Hood, Timothy, Toy Minstrel Figure, Will Scarlet, Will Stutley,
Little John; the difference between the two smaller ones is clear here with heaver sculpting of the thin parts obvious, while the dagger on the Canadian chap is longer. Neatly; both/all three issuers have gone with a taller sculpt for the man whose name was a play on his notable height, he's half-a-head above Robin and has a good [scale] six-inches on everyone else.

Alan-a-Dale, Archer, Australian Robin Hood, Australian Toy Figures, Bagged Toy Robin Hood, Blondel, Canada, Cereal Giveaways, Cereal Premium Robin Hood, Cereal Premiums, Derwent, Friar Tuck, Kellogg's Canada, Kellogg's Premiums, Kellogg's Robin Hood, Kellogg's Sugar Smacks, Little John, Maid Marion, Marksmen Robin Hood, Marx Figures, Marx Robin Hood, Marx Toy Soldiers, Marx Toys, Merry Men, Minstrel, Much the Miller, New Zealand Robin Hood, Post Cereals, Post Robin Hood, Premium Toy Figures, Premiums, Quentin, Rado Industries Robin Hood, Ri-Toys Robin Hood, Richard Green, Robin des Bois, Robin Hood, Robin of Loxley, Rubenstein Plastic Toys, Rubenstein Robin Hood, Rubenstein Toy Soldiers, Sheriff of Nottingham, Sherrif de Nottingham, Small Scale World, smallscaleworld.blogspot.com, Sugar Smacks Robin Hood, Timothy, Toy Minstrel Figure, Will Scarlet, Will Stutley,
Alan-a-Dale/Minstrel, a close-up of the base marking differences, the 'Canada' sculpt is on the right. I find red plastic a bugger to shoot (so don't know why I concentrated on this one!) but with a black & white filter and some stopping-down it seems to show what's needed. The unnamed 'minstrel' could used as/taken to be the Coeur de Lion's lover; Blondel?

Alan-a-Dale, Archer, Australian Robin Hood, Australian Toy Figures, Bagged Toy Robin Hood, Blondel, Canada, Cereal Giveaways, Cereal Premium Robin Hood, Cereal Premiums, Derwent, Friar Tuck, Kellogg's Canada, Kellogg's Premiums, Kellogg's Robin Hood, Kellogg's Sugar Smacks, Little John, Maid Marion, Marksmen Robin Hood, Marx Figures, Marx Robin Hood, Marx Toy Soldiers, Marx Toys, Merry Men, Minstrel, Much the Miller, New Zealand Robin Hood, Post Cereals, Post Robin Hood, Premium Toy Figures, Premiums, Quentin, Rado Industries Robin Hood, Ri-Toys Robin Hood, Richard Green, Robin des Bois, Robin Hood, Robin of Loxley, Rubenstein Plastic Toys, Rubenstein Robin Hood, Rubenstein Toy Soldiers, Sheriff of Nottingham, Sherrif de Nottingham, Small Scale World, smallscaleworld.blogspot.com, Sugar Smacks Robin Hood, Timothy, Toy Minstrel Figure, Will Scarlet, Will Stutley,
Much the Miller; I seem to remember him from childhood stories, although Marx haven't named theirs, they all share the same hood and similar kilt/surcoat tails, so they were all watching each-other or the Saturday-matinee's for their fashion leads, rather than historical sources, although they can all be painted-up for medieval armies!

Alan-a-Dale, Archer, Australian Robin Hood, Australian Toy Figures, Bagged Toy Robin Hood, Blondel, Canada, Cereal Giveaways, Cereal Premium Robin Hood, Cereal Premiums, Derwent, Friar Tuck, Kellogg's Canada, Kellogg's Premiums, Kellogg's Robin Hood, Kellogg's Sugar Smacks, Little John, Maid Marion, Marksmen Robin Hood, Marx Figures, Marx Robin Hood, Marx Toy Soldiers, Marx Toys, Merry Men, Minstrel, Much the Miller, New Zealand Robin Hood, Post Cereals, Post Robin Hood, Premium Toy Figures, Premiums, Quentin, Rado Industries Robin Hood, Ri-Toys Robin Hood, Richard Green, Robin des Bois, Robin Hood, Robin of Loxley, Rubenstein Plastic Toys, Rubenstein Robin Hood, Rubenstein Toy Soldiers, Sheriff of Nottingham, Sherrif de Nottingham, Small Scale World, smallscaleworld.blogspot.com, Sugar Smacks Robin Hood, Timothy, Toy Minstrel Figure, Will Scarlet, Will Stutley,
Down Under this one's Will Stutley, another one I recall from tales told to me as a child, or read in comics, elsewhere he's the anonymous 'signaller'! One of the missing Marx versions has the green guy shouting with cupped-hand and no stowed-bow!

Alan-a-Dale, Archer, Australian Robin Hood, Australian Toy Figures, Bagged Toy Robin Hood, Blondel, Canada, Cereal Giveaways, Cereal Premium Robin Hood, Cereal Premiums, Derwent, Friar Tuck, Kellogg's Canada, Kellogg's Premiums, Kellogg's Robin Hood, Kellogg's Sugar Smacks, Little John, Maid Marion, Marksmen Robin Hood, Marx Figures, Marx Robin Hood, Marx Toy Soldiers, Marx Toys, Merry Men, Minstrel, Much the Miller, New Zealand Robin Hood, Post Cereals, Post Robin Hood, Premium Toy Figures, Premiums, Quentin, Rado Industries Robin Hood, Ri-Toys Robin Hood, Richard Green, Robin des Bois, Robin Hood, Robin of Loxley, Rubenstein Plastic Toys, Rubenstein Robin Hood, Rubenstein Toy Soldiers, Sheriff of Nottingham, Sherrif de Nottingham, Small Scale World, smallscaleworld.blogspot.com, Sugar Smacks Robin Hood, Timothy, Toy Minstrel Figure, Will Scarlet, Will Stutley,
♪♫♪ Stick-fighting Maaaaaaaaaaaaan! ♫♪♪ The best candidate for converting/repainting to court jester or fool!

Alan-a-Dale, Archer, Australian Robin Hood, Australian Toy Figures, Bagged Toy Robin Hood, Blondel, Canada, Cereal Giveaways, Cereal Premium Robin Hood, Cereal Premiums, Derwent, Friar Tuck, Kellogg's Canada, Kellogg's Premiums, Kellogg's Robin Hood, Kellogg's Sugar Smacks, Little John, Maid Marion, Marksmen Robin Hood, Marx Figures, Marx Robin Hood, Marx Toy Soldiers, Marx Toys, Merry Men, Minstrel, Much the Miller, New Zealand Robin Hood, Post Cereals, Post Robin Hood, Premium Toy Figures, Premiums, Quentin, Rado Industries Robin Hood, Ri-Toys Robin Hood, Richard Green, Robin des Bois, Robin Hood, Robin of Loxley, Rubenstein Plastic Toys, Rubenstein Robin Hood, Rubenstein Toy Soldiers, Sheriff of Nottingham, Sherrif de Nottingham, Small Scale World, smallscaleworld.blogspot.com, Sugar Smacks Robin Hood, Timothy, Toy Minstrel Figure, Will Scarlet, Will Stutley,
The other three! Australia/New Zealand give them all names, Canada doesn't bother, but they still make-up the numbers. The rock guy needs a siege-engine, but there are plenty around to chose from, and Will Stutley would make a good No. 1 to this chap's No. 2. While you can never have enough medieval archers, for Crecy, Agincourt or the other one where we gave Frenchie a good spanking!

Alan-a-Dale, Archer, Australian Robin Hood, Australian Toy Figures, Bagged Toy Robin Hood, Blondel, Canada, Cereal Giveaways, Cereal Premium Robin Hood, Cereal Premiums, Derwent, Friar Tuck, Kellogg's Canada, Kellogg's Premiums, Kellogg's Robin Hood, Kellogg's Sugar Smacks, Little John, Maid Marion, Marksmen Robin Hood, Marx Figures, Marx Robin Hood, Marx Toy Soldiers, Marx Toys, Merry Men, Minstrel, Much the Miller, New Zealand Robin Hood, Post Cereals, Post Robin Hood, Premium Toy Figures, Premiums, Quentin, Rado Industries Robin Hood, Ri-Toys Robin Hood, Richard Green, Robin des Bois, Robin Hood, Robin of Loxley, Rubenstein Plastic Toys, Rubenstein Robin Hood, Rubenstein Toy Soldiers, Sheriff of Nottingham, Sherrif de Nottingham, Small Scale World, smallscaleworld.blogspot.com, Sugar Smacks Robin Hood, Timothy, Toy Minstrel Figure, Will Scarlet, Will Stutley,
Done did!

The lack of available information on the 50mm set from Down Under leaves questions still outstanding, for someone to follow-up, somewhere, sometime;
  • ·         Which cereal were they issued with?
  • ·         Were they Australian or New Zealand-issued, first?
  • ·         Who made/manufactured them?
  • ·         Did Canada issue a license or are they pirates
  • ·         Was there a Sherriff or 'tree-hugger'!?
And - to be honest similar questions remain over the 50mm 'Canada' figures!

Many thanks again to Glenn Sibbald for revealing the antipodean versions and donating a set to the blog - New to Hobby/Internet - cheers Glenn!

R is for Robin's Roustabout Rebels - Part 1 - Sets

I think (with the pink guitarist) we've looked at all the stuff in Glenn's excellent parcel from New Zealand, bar one item . . . it is that item, kindly donated to the blog by Glenn we're looking at in the next two posts.

And . . . Glenn lives literally yards from the epicenter of the horrendous atrocity which struck Christchurch the other day, so please spare a though for him and his neighbours, as I don't think anyone expected the 21st century to visit the fair lands of 'The Shire', so soon, or so violently.

I did cover this topic back nearer the start of the blog due to a lucky find of the smaller figures from Canada, and the larger figures being in the 'Big Purchase' or a tubbed PW Show purchase, I can't now remember - which are mostly the Ri-Toys re-issue figures also supplied to Marksmen.

At the time, I told the story as it was presented elsewhere on the Wibbly Wobbly Way, but the story seems to have changed once or twice since then, and still doesn't seem to be set in stone, so we'll ramble though it and each can draw his own conclusions!

The total extent of my sample with the previously-seen Marx/Rado 60mm's at the top, the new figures from the Antipodes in the middle and the Canada set - also seen previously - below them.

Now a complication in this, is that the Canadian/Southern Cross set/s are based on the Marx 54mm set, of which I have no examples! The 60mm are from Playsets I think (I'm missing all four of the original 'pose variations') while both the smaller sets were issued as Breakfast cereal premiums.

Another complication is that the smaller figures (specifically the Canadian issue) are also credited to Rubenstein, in the 'States, after the Canadians had finished with them (?) but I have never seen them in Rubenstein packaging, nor any empirical evidence for the accreditation, or for the link between Rubenstein and the Tatra 'Soldiers/Warriors of the World/Through the Ages'?

Knowing - as I'm sure by now you do - how much I like my empirical evidence for statements of fact, I'm maintaining a healthy scepticism of the Rubenstein link until I see something more concrete, but it's credible.

However and having said that, my sample - in multi-colours - is supposed to be Rubenstein not Breakfast cereal, which were [apparently] all-green, and an apple green not the jade-green of a couple of mine? Mine are mostly marked 'CANADA' though, which would suggest that even if Rubenstein handled them; they handled them as a wholesale jobber (Erwin's "...so called joggers"!) or a contractor, not as a manufacturer/mould-tool holder.

Or it means the apple-green ones are Kellogg's US Suger-smacks (and/or Rubenstein) while the multiple coloured ones are Canadian Kellogg's? Kent Sprecher's site says unmarked are from Canada and marked ('CANADA') are from the USA, but doesn't mention the unmarked Aussie/NZ ones? But then there are other colours, and I've seen half-and-half apple-green/orange-brown lots/sets being offered which seem to have come together?

Upon posting this - it's changes again! Colours are less of a 'set-in-stone' now and apparently the Canada-marked are Canada-issued, the opposite of two years ago . . . like I said, draw your own conclusions it'll likely have changed again in two years time!

  • ·         Main Marian
  • ·         Friar Tuck
  • ·         Sheriff of Nottingham
  • ·         Little John . . .
  • ·         . . . and three more unnamed Merry Men.
I am missing the four 'adjusted poses' from the original 60mm set which are on Kent Specher's site here (just over half-way down the page), but my 'guy blowing horn' seems to be my only Marx original - the more astute of you will have noticed he had some 'work-done' half-way through preparing the articles - he's as brittle as hell!

The Rubenstein-via-Canada-whoever set was a fourteen count - with the missing archer now in the Antipodean line-up below (see note on next post), these are the slightly finer-detailed of the two sets, but really only noticeable in the thickness of weapon-handles/bow-strings and other thin elements.

Base markings are on one or two circular depressions and are also reading from top-left to bottom-right are thus;
  • ·         Canada / Robin Hood
  • ·         Maid Marian Canada (single ring)
  • ·         Friar Tuck / Canada
  • ·         Canada / Sheriff of Nottingham
  • ·         Little John / Canada
  • ·         Minstrel / Canada
  • ·         [large release-pin mark but no text]

The new kids on the block! An apparent set of twelve poses; the Canadian 'Nottingham has seemingly gone 'walkabout' (with a teenage Jenny Agutter?. . . Who wouldn't?) along with the falling-back/sitting guy, who Glenn suggested might be hiding in a tree, which I thought was a lovely idea. Glenn hasn't seen them Down Under and I don't know if the two were part of that issue?

Again - left-to-right, top-to-bottom
  • ·         Robin Hood
  • ·         Maid Marion
  • ·         Little John

  • ·         Friar Tuck
  • ·         Much the Miller
  • ·         Will Stutley
  • ·         Derwent
  • ·         Quentin
  • ·         Timothy
  • ·         Archer
They are all named with the exception of 'Archer', understanding - of course - that the modern surname (much encountered in Borsetshire!) is based on the old occupational title!

One should also note that while the Canadian set carries a scaled-down version of the Marx 54mm Main Marian (as the whole set is copied from the Marx 54mm set), the Australian/New Zealand issue uses a new pose as Marion - which I've seen credited to the Marx 60mm 'Richard Green' TV tie-in set's version, but she seems to be actually a wholly new sculpt.

The Ri-Toys packaging; Marksmen used a variety of their own header cards and the guys who ruined the market by going direct to Ri-Toys (Rado Industries would only sell in large quantities) sold loose. Note the additional colours (over my sample) of red, blue and white figures. They only seem to have carried the nine poses, not the 'conversions', so a separate tool for the other four?

I can't find anything on the Australian/New Zealand end, or - at least - not on-line; there's nothing on Astronit and nothing on Crater Critters, so I'm assuming we have Mr. Sibbald to thank for bringing them to us as 'new to hobby' or 'new to Internet'. Cheers Glenn!

S is for Spirit of '76 Marches On! Against Great Odds?

Well, I was looking for the baseless 40mm versions of the Spirit of '76 as flagged-up by Chris Goddard in his article for Plastic Warrior magazine (issue 153; pp.19), it’s a search I do occasionally when I'm feeling rich (spare fiver!), when I found these a couple of weeks ago with a $7-something BIN and three watchers! You can guess the rest 'cos I'm the one photographing them!

Aren't they lovely! Before and after cleaning and before I got the black off the boy's nose and straightened the drum-sticks. Isn't it typical - they were beautifully packed and you could see from the photographs on feeBay they were not damaged, yet USFail, Royal Fail and/or Parcel Farce managed to crush both drum-sticks, despite a mountain of bubble-wrap! I gave good feedback as it wasn't the seller's fault in any way!

It was nearly a year ago that Brian sent the Award International set to the Blog, and here they are again with their diminutive clones . . . clones neatly-spliced with a dwarf's DNA though! I also took an Airfix comparison shot for that Blog as it was clear they weren't 'any-old' cake decorations . . .

. . . they are in fact the same maker (in Hong Kong) as the old Airfix piracy Redcoats - actually cross-painted Bluecoats!

Now, I may be no particular fan of terrorist insurgencies (did you hear that collective murmur of WTF from the PSTSM?), especially when it involves spilling tea, but even I can see there's something not quite right about expecting two old guys and a small-boy, armed with three musical instruments and a flag to march across a birthday cake (other puddings/desserts are available for decoration) to certain death while whistling whatever-came-before-Dixie!

It 'ain't right, I tells ya!

However, as far as I know these 40mm Spirit of '76 figures were never available in the UK, yet the Redcoats (based on Airfix'sWashinton's Army - still needs text!) seem to be freely available over here, usually as a set of 7 - with the 7th sometimes glued to his horse - or as an 8-piece set.

Now, here's the thing . . . assuming that they are neither that rare, we are probably looking at Culpitts handling the UK invasion, while someone like Wilton was distributing the spirited fifes & drums of the tea-party wreakers.

Here's a 'What if?';

What if Wilton (or someone similar) ordered a bunch of figures for the [then] upcoming celebration of the bicentenary of the success of said terrorist insurgency, say from a dodgy-looking bloke down the mainly toy-producing industrial estate alongside Port Tain Sang, at the end of the really long, really wide (with lots of hotels and restaurants - says Google) Grainville Road [don't look for any of this on Google Earth, you'll be wasting your time, it's only known to Erwin Sell and Paul Stadinger!].

And suppose the dodgy-looking bloke said "Yes, no problem, 20,000 units American Revolutionary Soldiers like these (opened hand to reveal Airfix Washington's Army figures given him by Wilton's rep's shipper's buyer), but twice size yes? And 20,000 units of men in painting (waving magazine-cutting of Archibald Willard's famous doodle with other hand), two months, real good, no problem".

Three months later, a tramp-steamer (this was the '70's!) arrived in the US (having left Kowloon harbour some weeks earlier) loaded with this sure-fire patriotic money-maker of cake decorating joy.

The cartons were shipped to Wilton (or whoever), and are opened . . . "What the Effing-mother-of-C?!!?" said [yelled] the Sales & Marketing guy (they always cuss in the movies - maybe I'm a closet Sales & Marketing guy?); "Get me another box!", he barked; it too was opened "No! They're all Effing red too - Godammit! What the Eff are we gonna' do now; they were CoD not FoB?

Now cake-men - like toy-men - probably have networks, and just suppose someone in the office said "What about PJ [Culpitt] over in Ingerland (they didn't call it Ookay then), he owes us a favour after he dumped all those dumb soccer players on us for Mexico" [or something improbable like that!], a phone call was made, a deal was struck and Britain got the Redcoats, while the American market kept the Spirit of '76 figures as a nice stand-alone vignette;  sans armed-support?

Only a 'what if?'!

7 Years War; 7YW; American Revolution; American War of Independence; Archibald Willard; AWI; Cake Decoration Figures; Cake Decorations; Men of '76; Old Cake Decorations; Old Plastic Figures; Old Toy Soldiers; Seven Years War; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Spirit of '76; Unknown Hong Kong; Vintage Cake Decorations; Vintage Plastic Figures; Vintage Plastic Soldiers; Culpitt; Wilton; 40mm Figures; Airfix; Marx; Award International, Washington's Army; Award International; 54mm Figures; N Y Cake Baking Supplies;
But they were definitely from the same maker (image stopped right down to be readable; translucent white is a bugger to macro!), and I recon they were designed to be together, but unless there are Bluecoats somewhere - and I've never seen them - it's not right to face them off . . . on a cake!

Are the Redcoats readily available in the US does anyone know, or do US collectors scan UK evilBay for them? Have you seen Bluecoats? Did you see the Sprit of'76 figures in UK bakers at the time?

A couple more comparison shots while I was in the mood! Did the Americans win the war by drumming us to death? No, but they drummed us out! Boom-boom! I wonder if those colonists ever dreamed what America would become . . . ?

You can see that the small-boy will make a decent adult for 30mm figures, here Marksmen/Rado-Ri-Toys, but SAE or Spencer Smith AWI would also benefit from his attendance at muster.

Still looking for the baseless set though! Maybe next year . . .

I seem to recall more reverence when I posted the Award set last year, it all depends what mood you're in when you sit down to type, anyone offended by any of the above - for any reason; should go to their doctor tomorrow and ask for a sense of humour - except the PSTSM; you can stay offended! More, less irreverent AWI tomorrow . . .
