D is for Donation - Chris - Books, TV, Movie and Licensed

Chris has also sent a bunch of licensed stuff to the blog, it made only three images, but some very interesting or useful bits are in there.

 

Three very different Hulks, the Mon Desire chocolate-egg gift, an unknown, which may be something like Wizards of the Coast (it has a 'gaming' finish' to it, but no base?), and a vintage pencil top, which is a real find! Superman is another pencil top, while Spider-Man is an eraser. He's a waterslide transfer print, like many of the 'flat' shaped erasers of the time.

 

The Super-deform is probably contemporary, or near-contemporary and is one of the archers, from the clips I've seen on YouTube, there are several archers, of both sexes and both franchises - Marvel and DC! And the Flash (?) could be also be Wizards, sans base, Kinder, sans base or one of the electronic game pieces (sans base!) we had an overview of, a while ago?

 

Brilliant find! We finally have the eponymous Charlie Chalk pencil top (blue, on the left), and confirmation that the previously seen Trader Joe had mould-release damage to his hat, although, it seems to be a double stamp of the triangular fold which is meant to be in his hat, but still nice to get an undamaged one with normal eyes!

 

The Simpsons Nelson Muntz (he's a  . . . yeah!) may go with the Homer (set wise) seen in the immediately-previous post, of stuff from Peter, they are the same size, maybe they are Kinder?. . . Goes and does a quick search, yes they are, but different sets! Bully, he was a bully!

 

But the pink Wilma is a fantastic find, as it's clearly a Hong Kong knock-off of the Kohner set's figure, we saw here;

And it is amazing how much stuff, ends-up having an HK clone, several times this year I've seen things I thought were too rare, or esoteric to have been copied, standing there, all Hong Kong'y! Many thanks to Chris for saving it.

D is for Donation - Chris - Animals

The backside of this pair (ooh missus!) is the recent parcel from Chris Smith and the animals therewith, and it was quite a fishy sample! But sea life seems to play fourth fiddle, to farm, zoo and dinosaurs, so it's nice to find what was available, over the years!

 

A couple of incomplete walkers, as with the Jigtoys, and cereal premium mini-kits, there is a tub for bits of these, and hopefully, eventually, enough parts will enable the reconstruction of some, I know I have a spare blue leg in there already, so the dog may walk again, but it has to be the correct leg!

 

On the subject of dogs . . . I love the blow-moulded celluloid effort from Japan, he has a tree hanger, and I hadn't even entertained the idea that such things might be used in that way, but with modern families throwing movie villains and Disny characters on their trees with gay abandon, I guess anything is possible in the non-bauble, bauble world!

 

Three! Looks like someone's fledgling collection of Octopi (and squid) ended-up in Chris's odds tray! I do have a few Octopuses and squids (fight among yourselves on the correct plural, spellchecker is happy with both), so, hopefully, we will have a post, or page on them one day.

 

Reptiles and anphibians, often got a shared set, or even shared book-space, when we were young, and with three 'rubber jigglers', there's plenty of nostalgia in this shot. The orange one, nylon I think, washed out by the flash, may be a place-card holder, it has a large, triangular wedge under his belly, which it's sitting on, and you could curve a place-card/name-plate through the slots of its arms, but then again, I may be over-thinking a game-playing piece?!!

 

The originals of the mini Elephant flat seem to have been US-available, US made, and hard polystyrene, these soft polyethylene ones which turn-up in the UK will be Christmas cracker novelties. Two squirrels, another favourite subject, the bisque one has lost an ear which would be hard to replace, but might perhaps be built-up using the superglue/baking soda method, and a file?

 

The plastic one may be from a kids comic/magazine set or something, while the little white lamb is almost certainly adrift from his/her small, cheap, Hong Kong nativity set?

 

These are very interesting, probably Hong Kong, and never to be ascribed a maker, they are a set of sharks, including some unusual ones, like the Thresher at the back with the long upper tail fin, which they use as a whip to herd small fish like sardines into a bait-ball! Or the Saw Shark, front left.

 

Pencil tops, they are mostly marked 1980 / 5p, as can be seen on the upturned Bowmouth Guitarfish, possibly by the collector who purchased them, as a lot, and recorded the price and date, as it's not something you'd find on a tub of them, back at the time?

 

 

Another shark, and several interesting fish, some copies of US originals, and at least three probably belonging to sets/part-sets already in the pile, so very useful, Chris was taken with the flying fish, and it's a lovely sculpt, while the seahorse is a scale-up of a similar one seen in a past sea life roundup, even to colour and type of plastic, so they probably belong together too?

 

Rubber jigglers of a whale and a lobster, I shot the whale from an awkward angle, but it illustrates the gape-mouth, a feature of many jigglers, from alien monsters through full Chinasaurs, to this chap, or chapess!

 

This is interesting, it's fully fired porcelain or fine china, as opposed to bisque or terracotta, and fully glazed in two colours, I suspect it might be a chopstick rest, but not the common 'Blue & White' ones normally found (post in the queue, and boat seen in the last 'brown water navy' post), so it may just be a French pudding prize, or more miscellaneous keepsake/collectable?

N is for November's Sandown Park - Erasers

And not just any old erasers, but that the bulk of them are probably Diener Industries, one way or another, the other factor being that they are also French premiums, but may, due to petroleum, also be British! I picked these up a few at a time, every time I passed the chap's stall, and wish now I'd hoovered up the last few, but they were mostly duplicates, I think!

 

These are probably not Diener, as they are proper eraser-rubber, but I thought they'd go very well with the Lik Be (that's LB of course!) and Holly anthropomorphic musicians, in a future comparison post / battle of the animal bands! They are also pencil-tops.

 

These are all clearly marked Diener Ind., with a '(C)' mark, and are a mix of generics, Disney, cute and a Fontanini clown-sculpt knock-off, along with an Easter basket of bunnies! And they may well belong to several sets, or even some of the sets below, as explained as we go.

 

These are unmarked, but are manufactured in the same smudgy silicon-rubber of all Diener's 'erasers', which were always shit erasers, as they just smudged pencil around the page, leaving everything looking awful! Again, they could be from more than one set, but the paint ties them into the premiums below. The red kitten is a slightly different sculpt to the yellow one in the previous shots - head moved to ease undercuts?

I can't work out if this is supposed to be some kind of anthropomorphic Viking, or a French TV character? Nor is it clear if it's damaged, poorly fettled or had a charm/key-ring loop removed?

 

These two, both Disney, are marked Esso and Disney Prod., and were a set of premiums, given away with Esso fuels, defiantly issued in France, the complete sets are to be found in the pages of Jean Piffret's book Figurines Publicities, but, as I think I've mentioned before, we had some when we were kids, not from this set, but from the set of woodland (or other) animals, some of which are in the upper shots.

 

Indeed, the slightly Beatrix Potter'esque pricklepin in the same flesh pink as the odd figure above, is one of the items on my nostalgia wants list, as it was in my pencil case until I was far too old to have affection for such things! And the three little pigs would also go with the other musical mammals!

 

While these are just marked (C) Walt Disney Prod., but you can see where the Esso has been obliterated on the tool, so there was probably a commercial issue too, at some point.

 

Therefore, I think a couple of the sets annotated by Piffret, as French, were issued here, also with Esso, at some point around the late 1960's or early 1970's, possibly without the paint highlights of the French and more commercial Diener issues. There were more sets issued as premiums in France, though?

 

Four other, non-Diener, non-Esso types, with, from the left a grotesque facemask pencil top, this was probably from the era of cereal-premium totem-pole funny-faces and the semi-flat African mask charm type premiums. Next is a vampire, or Dracula type, in his casket, and just waking-up, by the look of it!

The footballer is bigger that the Hong Kong painted ones, issued as either key-rings or pencil-tops, but may have been the inspiration for them, and he is a pencil top too! While the 'finger fright' rubber-jiggler just came with them to make a round-number! The first three being, again, 'proper' eraser-rubber.

F is for Follow-up - Robot Pencil Tops

Except, these mostly have a person inside, as the originals, and are therefore 'battle suits', except that some transformers or autobots don't? I don't know, I barely follow it and haven't watched any of the movies, too loud and too reliant on CGI for me, bah-humbug! We looked at my smallish sample four-and-a-half years ago here;

A sample which has since grown, not least with the help of Chris Smith, who not only sent that pair the other day (I think the brown one is less common), but who seems to send one or two in every parcel, and a few have come in from other sources, which is useful, as there seem to be quite a few to find altogether, either version type (soft erasers or harder pencil-top-only's), or colour, or post number.

What follows is some Internet scrapings, I've been saving, on-and-off, since 2010, which back-up a comment I made elsewhere a couple of years ago, mentioning the fact that they keep turning up in quantity.

Here's a bulk lot, branded to Treasure Chest, by Goliath-Hall Inc., but obviously imported from Hong Kong, of interest is that the whole lot are in one polymer colour, yellow, but are otherwise the same as all the others, usually sold as generics. There is a current Goliath Games, but this lot were formed in the 1950's and closed-up in 2005.

Four of the poses, possibly on the origianl pencils some issues came with, possibly Tom[y], reading at the top of the left-hand one? I'd like to find more of the green ones! I'm not sure how well this image will show, though, until I publish? It's behaving oddly in Picasa!

Another all-yellow set, no 'Masked Kamen Rider' (thank you Geofry Peeters) in this issue apparently, whether that makes him rarer, when they turn-up by the box-load is anyone's guess!

A mix of colours, including a clearly off-white, or cream, as opposed to the snow-white seen in my previous post, It would seem that rarer colours are the two purples (deep and mauve'ish) and the brown, but that could simply be a question of what I've encountered, rather than any genuine rarity!

While this generic, counter-top lot, have been manufactured in an eraser rubber, with no paint, whether it's a good rubber, or smeary silicon I don't know, but it looks eraserble! Rider is back!

Autobots, Godaikins, Grandizer, Mazinger, Shogun Robots, or Transformers, you have to be a more dedicated fan than me, to know what you are looking at, but the toys and minis are plentiful, and fun!

O is for Once Upon a Time, in June! Sci-Fi, Fantasy, TV & Movie

As a complete contrast to Pirates, this is the stuff of a whackier nature I picked up at last June's Plastic Warrior show, not as much in this category as some years, but a couple of really quirky things, a nice box-ticker, and a rarity or two!

 

A T-Rex, on a skateboard, waving an axe? It doesn't get much weirder than that, except it's just about to! And while it may be Kinder, it could be a lesser make of capsule-egg, or even a gum-ball type thing?

 

The Heudebert marked copy of a Captain Video figure was a lovely find, and while the original is one prone to damage, here they've shortened the firearm into more of a pistol, and despite the fine barrel, it has survived! While the actually Kinder gnome, is standing front of the Lone Star toadstool house!

 

And no, this is not where it gets weirder, this is pretty weird, but not the real weirdness! A money-box/bank, made by the same division that was responsible for the rubber pet-toys and squeakers, this is a stable (non-weeping) PVC, issued under the Eaglet branding.

 

This is the box ticker, a set of the Toys R Us bucket set True Legends - Mythical Warriors fantasy figures, one of each pose, so someone was offloading their master set? I've seen them credited to both Toy Major AND Chap Mai, it's likely to have been one or the other, and with other True Legend sets having the Toy Major sleleton warriors, for now, I'll go with them. Brian Berke did send us a handful of these, a while back, but no one ID'd them at the time!

 

Weirdness, but still not the weirdest, the Alien is about seven inches, and while made of rubber, seems to have a very solid interior, like it's metal underneath, you could certainly use it as a cosh! UFO lawn-skittles maybe?

 

The Wonder Woman is a cord-tie type thing, I've seen others, for school-bags or whatever, sometimes they are a keychain type thing . . . I don't know, I'm blagging it, off vague memories of things seen, out and about, it was in one of the donation bags!

 

From the right . . . no, the RIGHT, we have another of the larger Captain Video space/GI figures from Lido Archer, then an unknown figure which looks both character-driven and a bit Phidal-looking, but probably not actually by them, maybe a Ben 10 thing?

 

In the middle is the female scarecrow, pencil-top, who looks like a line-up completer, for the John Pertwee era, Worzel Gummidge set; I don't recognise the character? I have three now, I think, and I assume there's at least four, so, with this and two Gummidge's, I suspect I'm still looking for a rendition of Una Stubb's Aunt Sally?

 

The monkey is a tea-bag premium I think, while on the far-left, is the real weirdness, it's so weird, it's been left-off the left of left-field! 

 

This was in a bunch of smaller bits from Adrian, and I looked at it and said something about 'fun' and 'homemade', and he looked a little hurt at my dismissal of his offering, and sure enough, when I got it home (my eyesight is getting shit! But I have got reading glasses now), it became clear that while, yes that is bread-bag ties for arms and legs, the whole assembly seems to have commercial thought, and actual design behind it?

 

Originally a cartoon dog keyring and pencil-topper, the green tie has been carefully designed to have the arm-and-leg twists run over the top of it, and down channels in the sides, so as it's pushed into the pencil cavity it holds everything tight. The boots are gum-ball charm, football boots, while the cartoon hands should have convinced me straight away.

 

Everything is PVC except the bag-ties, which are in a non-standard (for bag-ties) colour, and everything is filled/sealed with what looks like the plumbers-sealant I use for PVC mends. That someone ever thought this up, let-alone thought it might have commercial potential is extraordinary, but someone else looking at it, remembered something like them, in gum-ball capsule machines!

 

It's a commercially manufactured, 'homemade' bendy toy, gum ball prize! Of a dog, in a tie, with Mickey Mouse gloves, and football boots, with googly eyes!

 

A couple of Matchbox whatsit-2000 figures, an Aristocat cereal premium, an unknown . . . trash-panda? Kinder maybe? A phone-ornament/hanger, of Buzz Lightyear, an Autobot's fireable fist (?) and a Star Wars looking, action-figure sidearm!

 

Kinder either side, Daffy Duck as a plug-together 'Steckfigure', along with one of the cartoon 'deform' spacemen, but between them, in slightly marbled yellow plastic, too large for a Kinder egg, is a Res Plastic solid, of Speedy Gonzalez! And obviously punched for a key-ring or cord.

 

As I can never remember which of these Tinykins I have, I'll always buy them, if I see them going cheap, and these were reasonable, so I grabbed them. I think I have most of them, but the cousin-ducks are all different, and I don't know if I have all of them, and wasn't sure if any Thumper I have has both ears!

R is for Recent Rack-toy Roundup

Or, at least, pocket-money stuff I picked up in a gift shop the other day! So, to Stansted Mountfitchet, from whence the Airport down the road took its name, and more on that visit in subsequent posts, but specifically, on the efficacy of the gift shop for toy and model figure collectors.

 

A soft, silicon-rubber skeleton in slime, and another coffin for the sub-collection of novelty coffins! This one made/issued in the UK by Whitehouse Leisure International of Dublin and err . . . Basildon! It's a bit of fun and I think we've seen the 54mm'ish figurine, separately, in bags, previously?

 

Poured-resin pencil tops from Elgate, a name which has appeared in the Tag List a couple of times, but on whom there are a couple of more substantial posts in the Toy Fair/trade-show reports queue, which may have these too! Approximately 40mm if you saw them carefully off their, err . . . oil drums!

 

Glow-in-the-dark aliens, again a similar one [actually, the earless one with lizard eyes on the back of the card] is currently in the queue, only found on Thursday (in Cranleigh Post Office!), this one is also Whitehouse (the other is under Kandytoys), and while a caricature type big-head/super deform, will add to the growing sidebar of glow-in-the-dark aliens! His (or her . . . its?) oil-drum has already gone to charity!

L is for Legami

Mentioned twice recently, and both products make a reprise in this post, the Italian (Milan-based) Legami is a new name in stationary, or new to me at least, and as a follow-up to the previous post, continuing with the theme of pencil tops and etcetera!

Foam Unicorns!

Definitely a theme at the moment! I'll have to look out for the [scented? really?] eraser, and the light-up pencil-sharpener, although both are cartooney, it doesn't stop us buying them/shooting them so you don't have to! There's also a spaceman on the three-colour highlighter, with an ariel on his helmet, like the Stingray crew!

 

Clingers and moulded finials

 

Looks to be the same as the ones I found in WHSmith, a few years ago now, during the height of the Iwako (and clones) moment - although they are still everywhere; I think the initial flood has retreated from the doorstep! So could they have been re-badged Legami all along?
