About Me

I’m a 60-year-old Aspergic gardening CAD-Monkey. Sardonic, cynical and with the political leanings of a social reformer, I’m also a toy and model figure collector, particularly interested in the history of plastics and plastic toys. Other interests are history, current affairs, modern art, and architecture, gardening and natural history. I love plain chocolate, fireworks and trees, but I don’t hug them, I do hug kittens. I hate ignorance, when it can be avoided, so I hate the 'educational' establishment and pity the millions they’ve failed with teaching-to-test and rote 'learning' and I hate the short-sighted stupidity of the entire ruling/industrial elite, with their planet destroying fascism and added “buy-one-get-one-free”. Likewise, I also have no time for fools and little time for the false crap we're all supposed to pretend we haven't noticed, or the games we're supposed to play. I will 'bite the hand that feeds', to remind it why it feeds.

H is for How They Come in - Charity Shops Again!

I picked up a couple of bags, just after the last post on the subject, then managed to find a couple more shots I'd missed (which aren't in the big folder of stuff waiting), so here's a few bits, some of which we may have seen before?

Two-quid for a very mixed bag, several of which pieces will go back to a different charity shop in the next donation from me, but from which a few useful pieces were sorted into the collection, and well look at the better pieces below.

The dinosaurs will feature in a forthcoming post on erasersaurs, for that is what I think they are! The two lady bears are 'In My Pocket' toys from Morrison, while the red stuff is a right old mix, Nabisco Dougal, the unknown premium elephant we looked at years ago next to the Kellogg's-Raja-Dunkin ones and a bear previously shelfied in pastel shades as Baby Shower rack toys, AND found in the street in yellow plastic.

The ball, soft-foam, which is increasingly turning-up in these mixed lots, is from some rival to Nerf Guns, which I did see the name of the other day, but forgot to note!

I picked this up because it was cheap, and the basket was undamaged (along with all those ears!), so it was a rather fine example of a new name - Avon 'Forest friends' - for both the Tag list and the A-Z blogs - eventually! Probably meant to post it at Easter, may have, but found these images anyway!

The other recent bag - I seem to have veritable herds of these in dozens of sizes, sets, plastic types, because obviously it was a very successful movie, and got heavily covered, even until now, and I will have to sit down at some point in the future, and sort them all out, for a proper ID session/disambiguation post! Disney's Frozen!

While this was a 50p purchase a year or two ago which we may have had here, real borderline as far as taking the term 'figural' goes, but fun, and the sort of home-made stuff gift-shops still carried when I was a kid and Hong Kong's tsunami of polymer had barely started to flow!

E is for Executive Mini Racetrack

Another board-game and the sort of over-priced shite you find in mail-order catalogues or airport departure 'mall' boutique type shops, yet - being all wood and metal - the direction all toys should try to go in!

Board Game; Board Game Playing Pieces; Boardgame Pieces; Classics from Debenhams; Debenhams; Debenhams Classics; Executive Mini Racetrack; Game Counters; Game Playing Pieces; Horse Race; Horse Racing; Horse Riders; Race Track Figures; Racing Game; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Wooden Novelty; Wooden Toy;
Lacking the finesse of an old Victorian or Edwardian game of the same ilk, it's probably laser-cut and machine-manufactured, it was next-to-nothing in a charity shop a while ago, but it missed the adding of such purchases to a Friday date-post and rather got stuck in the limbo of Picasa's queue!

I've kept the six race horses and riders, the three obstacles, the two dice and the pannel-pin with ball-finial, and I managed to prise the central 'hedge' off, so may use it for photographing HO-OO stuff one day, but the rest of the board and the box helped start a fire back in March I think!

One of the figures was still in a little bag, whether this means they were all individually wrapped, or if it was a spare, I don't know, but you will have seen in the previous image, there's only room for four to sensibly start a race at the same time?

Number stickers were factory applied and all six horses are a slightly different colour, I don't know how likely that is to be 'meant' or how much is due to batch decoration, but suspect there should be three silver/gunmetal and three antiqued/gold-finish?

M is for Mixed Menagerie of Mermaids

The title covers it, a few mixed mermaids - representing all the main toy-use polymer groups!

Capsule Toy Mermaid; Cocktail Glass Ornaments; Disney Ariel; Disney Mermaids; Fish Tank Mermaid; Fish Tank Ornament; Fish Tank Toy; Hong Kong Mermaids; Made in China; Made in Hong Kong; Mermaids; Novelty Mermaid Toys; Novelty Toy Mermaids; Penn Plax; Plastic Mermaids; Polyethylene Toy Figures; Polypropylene Toys; Polystyrene Figure; Poured Resin Castings; Resin Figurines; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; The Works;
At the back right is the Resin one we saw a while ago, still available from The Works, leaning against her is a small gum-ball/capsule machine charm in a hard, undecorated styrene.

To their right (the viewers left) is another resin lump, a recent purchase from Penn Plax and one of a set of Disney stuff for fish tanks, note how much better finished it is than their treasure chest, or Easter Island statues.

In front of that lump is a little polypropylene 'Polly Pocket' type thing of the same Disney Ariel/Little Mermaid figurine, probably Bluebird/Kenner for Disney Stores? The tatty-paint pair between the two Ariel's are polyethylene Hong Kong lumps from the 1970's, I suspect they belong with a group of rather eclectic sculpts which include a turtle with gwee-tar and a W-shaped sea-serpent?

At the front is a clear-blue, polystyrene, cocktail-glass decoration I rescued from a party in Berlin in the 1980's (and one of the oldest-sitting non-25mm figures in my collection), unmarked but likely a Hong Kong generic, although the Germans had lots of plastic novelty makers a few years earlier, so it could be domestic production?

The other bright-blue tailed-girl is an unmarked - probably 'China' - mermaid, similar to but not Soma (who's mermaids' are better sculpts), she's probably from a generic 'Toob', rack-toy or possibly via cake-decorating? She's a modern substitute PVC-like rubber/elastomer.

You can judge the scales from the approximately 28mm Polly Pocket alike.

That's a mixed menagerie of mermaids!

H is for How They Come In - Yesterday!

A bit of a Brucie Bonus; even as I was posting the last two How They Come In's yesterday, I was carrying these four in my pocket, a quid each for the Mermaid (The Works) and the -  over muscled (has he had a makeover?) - Goblin from Marvel (Newsagent) and 50p for the two kittens (Charity shop), which I assume are from one of the pocket-pet series'? Ten minutes in/up the High Street!

1 The Works PU Resin Mermaid Kisses And Seashell Wishes Fantasy Figures; Fantasy Models; Plastic Figurines; Plastic Toys; Pocket Money Toy; PU Resin; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com;
Poured resin, and glitter, it's not got a lot of redeeming features, but it's a figure! Although I notice there's a design-matched sticker hiding a printers typo ....made, ....miad, ....mayd?

2 Zuru Spiderman 1 Blind Bag; Fantasy Figures; Fantasy Models; Pocket Money Toy; PVC Vinyl Rubber; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Super Hero; Superheroes;
Seen 'em before, Zuru, six new designs, this is my second, and . . . err . . . that's it.

3 The Works PU Resin Mermaid Kisses And Seashell Wishes Zuru Spiderman Kittens DSCN8604 Blind Bag; Fantasy Figures; Fantasy Models; In My Pocket; Kittens; Pets; Plastic Figurines; Plastic Toys; Pocket Money Toy; PU Resin; PVC Vinyl Animals; PVC Vinyl Rubber; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Super Hero; Superheroes;
It's a never ending stream of figural stuff, some of it really good, or really cool, or really rare, some of it so-so, some of it is utterly pointless shite! But it's 'horses for courses' and all in the eye of the beholder (or self-deceiver!) and I only hope everyone finds something for them in the Small Scale World saloon!
