About Me

I’m a 60-year-old Aspergic gardening CAD-Monkey. Sardonic, cynical and with the political leanings of a social reformer, I’m also a toy and model figure collector, particularly interested in the history of plastics and plastic toys. Other interests are history, current affairs, modern art, and architecture, gardening and natural history. I love plain chocolate, fireworks and trees, but I don’t hug them, I do hug kittens. I hate ignorance, when it can be avoided, so I hate the 'educational' establishment and pity the millions they’ve failed with teaching-to-test and rote 'learning' and I hate the short-sighted stupidity of the entire ruling/industrial elite, with their planet destroying fascism and added “buy-one-get-one-free”. Likewise, I also have no time for fools and little time for the false crap we're all supposed to pretend we haven't noticed, or the games we're supposed to play. I will 'bite the hand that feeds', to remind it why it feeds.

S is for Shelfies - Smyths

I was actually in Smyths the other day looking for Halloween stuff (there was none) and the displays were pretty-much the same as these shelfies, which I actually shot back in August, but which I didn't get around to posting in Rack Toy Month, so, basically - all still available from Smyths!

This has previously been seen in B&M, seems to be a generic, but similar to HGL / HTI stuff we saw here a few years ago, I think I now have some of these in the loose stash courtesy of Jon Attwood's donations or charity-shop bags?

These are the sort of thing which will start turning-up in charity bags in about 18-months time, so worth knowing, simply to attribute, at a later date; Epoch Games, also gets them in the Tag-list! Seems to be a variation of Buckaroo or the old load-a-camel game!

Unbranded generic here, and again the dinosaurs look familier?

A full display of Schleich, with fantasy, dinosaurs, wild and domestic animals, both boxed and single-pick items. You can't fault the attention to detail and realism, but the price takes them out of the reach of poorer kids, in a way Britains didn't really?

Just Play have these out at the moment, there have been so many chunky vinyls of Disney's main characters, there's a book to be written on them at some point, in the meantime this will help ID five of the many thousands!

Pokemon blisters and boxes, again several ranges over the years, all quite small scale, and running to many characters/poses, I think these were Mindstorm Toys, but probably licensed from Tomy or Mattel, both of whom have had the properties for twenty/thirty-odd years now?

Cartoon characters in Hot Wheels cars . . . and things! A perennial favourite with younger kids, I have a small self-published tome in the library by a Don Elliot (Comic Character Cars), which covers these up to the 1980's, from many makers!

Finishing-up this batch with bubble-liquid bottles topped-off with hatching dinosaur eggs!

M is for Micro Toy Box

I know one or two other people have covered these either on Blogger or elsewhere, and, to a certain extent, that is the nature of covering new or current production, but that doesn't mean they don't need to go here, if only as a box-ticker!

I only became aware of these when they were on clearance at Aldi, about a year-and-a-half ago, and bought these three, at about a fiver each, as they all had at least one figure! And I had intended to leave it there; a fun sample.

This is the Rock'Em Sock'Em Robot (originally a Marx toy, but for many years owned by Mattel), reduced to about 25mm! The green one being a 'common' item in the set, the red adversary was also available as a 'rare', and I think I did end-up with one, but we'll get on to that!

Under the card you get four more 'blind' toys, each actually in a blind bag, so no cheating, but a mountain of waste on a dying planet? I'm guessing the line didn't do that well, as in some jurisdictions, window sets of 10, 15 or 20 items were issued, where most (6,10 or 14) were unpacked and visible, with only a few (4, 5 or 6) 'blinded' behind a graphics card.

The three top/visible items in that first purchase. about a dozen of the items in the first series were figural, and most had a balance or 'oppo', but I guess the original idea was not to get them out and add them to your Airfix soldiers, but keep them as minis!

One of the weirder aspects of the Aldi ones was that the insert card contained instructions on how to reverse the card so you could use the tubs as a unitary display system; a stack of little clear cabinets!

This being on the outside of the insert. But, "Hold on?" I hear the brighter of you asking, there's a side missing anyway, why would you need to turn in, to hide the artwork? But then you'd be displaying the instructions for the display faff, on the two wings, so you'd need to fold them out of the way too, and . . . and . . . it really doesn't make much sense? Not only that, but I think the point was that the blank side was supposed to have a sticker on it, hence 'turn' and 'reverse'?

In the event, they put stickers on all four sides, not only that but A) on the inside faces of the tub, and B) the type of paper stickers which will be a bugger to remove without a lot of effort, mess and the intervention of a solvent? The whole thing was a nonsensical daftness which clearly hadn't been thought through, or executed properly, by anyone in design, marketing or the art department?

The blind bags themselves give no clue as to the contents.

As it happened, they were then - in the run-up to Christmas '22 - further reduced to something like £2.50, to clear the stillage for the next bargain, and sorting through them to remove those which had been raided, I bought the lot! As a result, I had a fair few duplicates, not least these Hot Wheel cars (also a Mattel brand), so I 'unboxed' some!

Which revealed also, another odd aspect of the 'stacking' instructions - three different box designs which didn't stack between designs, and with no lids, didn't really stack at all, with or without reversed card inserts, or removed stickers??? Actually 'stacking' like empty yogurt-pots - inside each-other!

Barbies, board-games, bears and other recognisable brands of our childhood were included in the series, and this is the contents of another tub. The board-games and other - originally closed-box - toys were represented by simple stickers around small polymer tiles.

A couple of the tubs went on the scanner, with dubious results in the 'success' field!

Contents of another tub, stacking hoops from Little Tikes (now MGA Entertainment), a bucket & spade, a Barrel of Monkeys (Lakeside-Milton Bradley-Hasbro), a rocking horse and an early Nerf gun. The monkeys are no more than about 8mm at the longest line.

The full line of the first series, I think, in the end, I managed to get everything except a Magic 8-Ball, but I ended up with a lot of tat, and while I meant to take more shots of the mini toys, they ended-up going to storage, and will have to wait for another day, but there's plenty on the Internet for those whose 'research' consists of hoovering up other peoples efforts.

And while I was relieved to get one or two Skeletors for my dozen-or-so He-Men, I was gutted when friend of the Blog, Tom Clague, posted his trio (with Teela) on Faceplant and alerted me to a second series!

And - of course - now I have to get the 'army men', who look to be marginally larger than the monkeys!

This second series, like the Horrible History figures from Worlds Apart, seem to have gone straight to a few dealers, suggesting that you need to know where the good trade-auctions are, if you want to get this stuff as a year-round earner, in your evilBay or Etsy shop! And with another Nerf and a Pepper Pig, some more modern brands are in there.

Branded to Super Impulse USA, but, with both Hasbro and Mattel to the fore as representations, licensing must have been a nightmare!

Q is for Quicker Than I Thought!

Glanced at one of these the other day and I said it was bigger than the others but would make for a good forced-perspective shot when I dug the rest out . . . well; I dug the rest out and did some forced-perspective shots!

The previously mentioned, likely line-up; In front is the most recent from Mattel's line of Hot Wheels 'Starships', it's a much more detailed machine than the others, but - as I thought - looks better with the others behind it. The second machine is the Galoob Action Fleet beast, which I believe only came with Luke or Leia figures, but also takes the civilians (two shots down) and here, the giant lizard rider from Tatooine, who with his giant-lizard prod, looks regal enough to lead the charge!

Behind them are two paint versions of the Galoob MicroMachines speeder with the slightly longer, but slimmer Hasbro MicroMachine from a few years ago (in-line - movie VII?). There's a new film out any day now isn't there? Let's hope there's something for us, there's been precious little from the out-of-line and back-story movies - none of which I've seen, it's all become a bit of a whore to Mammon!

This is a little simpler, but I have more of them! From the front Action Fleet Luke, Action Fleet Leia, and four MicroMachine rebels with the Hasbro Luke among them. Clothing colour variation (the rebels are supposed to be Leia I think) leads to a nice squad!

The climbing machine comes courtesy of a heat-bent stand, although in the movie they stay parallel with the ground even when climbing or dropping?

The old back-path weaving it's way through the brackish salt-swamps between Moss Eisley and Jabba's palace is busy with pirates, smuggles and hoodlums going about their nefarious tasks for the Hutt's!

From the front; Galoob Action Fleet speeders with un-named (?) bit-part hoodlums, Ray's Jakku speeder (Mattel), two Galoob MicroMachine civilian speeders from Tatooine and at the back, from the left Hasbro MicroMachine Ray's speeder, Hasbro MicroMachine Jakku Landspeeder (looks like a beach-bum, hippy speeder!) and a diminutive civi' (from one of the Galoob MicroMachine three-vehicle sets?) who's even smaller than the other two.

S is for Starship Troopers, Not!

I said the other day I should have tried some figures with the Halo UNSC 'Warthog' from Mattel's Hot Wheels, and that I could only think of the Starship Troopers as being vaguely suitable, the Galoob ones are still in the attic, but it turned out I was thinking of something else anyway and . . .

. . . yesterday (Sunday) I found (courtesy of Peter Evans) these copies of Galoob's Xpanders looking for something else, so a quick photo-shoot ensued. The running figure is 28-mil. I think they came together with the dino's and there was a larger sample overall.

Compared with the larger (32mm for same figure sculpt) and - I think - commoner set of equally poor rack-toy copies which came with hollow M2/M3 Bradley/ACAV type things in tubbed sets about 12/15 years ago, although probably still findable in seaside type discount stores.

From the archive - I don't have the Xpanders which are the basis for the china-troops, but I do have a small sample of the similar Galoob Starship Troopers, with the Micro-Machine size above and the Action Fleet size below, I don't think either is a particularly complete sample, and as is often the case with these things; Shaun has covered them in far more depth, and his repaints must be where I got the Halo idea from!

The larger set's figures are - like the Star Wars Action Fleet (and similar Playmates Star Trek) - semi-action figures, with two points of articulation - through/across the shoulders and at the waist; they also have a magnet in the base, the use for which I haven't looked-up!

R is for Rey's Speeder

Just a quickie, bought this in one of the discount stores for a pound the other day, another remaindered Mattel Hot Wheels die-cast Star Wars toy from the force awakens.

In the box

Out of the box

Playing with backgrounds to try and make it fly!

That's it, haven't seen the movie, won't until the DVD hits charity shops, ain't gonn'a dig the smaller Hasbro one out (if there was one?) to compare (or not until I've more to make that post) so that's it!

Nice toy though, useful addition to the Micro Machine/Action Fleet . . . err . . . fleet!

S is for Star Wars IV - Comparison Shots

It took me a while to find the other two in the pile, but here are all three of them together!

The bodies of the vehicles are all pretty much of a muchness, but it's the way Mattel have slid the guy forward to the tip which grates, but - as I said in Part 1 - I haven't seen the movie, so it may be the correct configuration?

With the stands they're a less effective sight!

S is for Star Wars II - Capsule-egg Key Rings

These have been kicking around for a while now and (if I can find the link) this blog showed the full range some time ago. I saw them in The Works as clearance two Christmases ago (2015/16), but they sold out before I could get any; and they were £1.99 each! They are now in Pound-plus (like Poundland, but it's not all just for a pound!) for a quid which seems better!

Key-rings (chains, fobs); but the chains are quickly dealt with and while it leaves a little hole in them, that can be filled and dry-brushed or washed-in with a bit of paint.

Manufactured by TPF Toys for shipping-in by STL imports there have only ever been the six poses, and while they are a little small (around the 50mm bracket) I like that the Wookie and Yoda have been made 'in-scale' with the others.

Playing!

Still playing...
