I’m a 60-year-old Aspergic gardening CAD-Monkey. Sardonic, cynical and with the political leanings of a social reformer, I’m also a toy and model figure collector, particularly interested in the history of plastics and plastic toys. Other interests are history, current affairs, modern art, and architecture, gardening and natural history. I love plain chocolate, fireworks and trees, but I don’t hug them, I do hug kittens. I hate ignorance, when it can be avoided, so I hate the 'educational' establishment and pity the millions they’ve failed with teaching-to-test and rote 'learning' and I hate the short-sighted stupidity of the entire ruling/industrial elite, with their planet destroying fascism and added “buy-one-get-one-free”. Likewise, I also have no time for fools and little time for the false crap we're all supposed to pretend we haven't noticed, or the games we're supposed to play. I will 'bite the hand that feeds', to remind it why it feeds.

R is for Retro Kitsch

The theme we've been revisiting all year, in fact the initial post was last autumn, so it's been over a year! NASA-type astronauts of a cartoony design with rockets of a retro, playroom wallpaper style! TKmaxx seasonal shelfies, I took these weeks ago, and I think they're all sold out now, not something I'd give house-room to, but a fun addition to the trend.

Delivering gifts!

Scraping the inside of the glass dome!

Regolithball fight!

I hope they haven't sold-out of these, as I would hope my fellow Brit's have more class, sense, taste and decency, than to spend a tenner on this shite, but I know I'm deluding myself, and Tanyachelle from Essex has already put them on the fridge! Nasty.

NW1 is for Novelties, Wot-wot!

Heay, there's no rule which states your titles HAVE to make sense! This (NW1) was a new name at this year's Birmingham Gift Fair, back in February, presumably named after the postcode of the location of their warehouse or offices?

Most of what they carried was really kitsch, really shite, or way outside the vague parameters of both this Blog and/or my/your collection/s to be worth photographing, but as an addendum to the tourist stuff of Elgate, a reminder that other brands make, or import this ephemeral stuff!

Fridge magnets, the guard would go in the novelty collection if I found him, cheap, and I'm sure there must be both London Bus and Telephone Box collectors out there! And there was an 'architectural miniatures' Blog, probably still is, in the Blog list, but it hasn't posted anything, since some-time before the Pandemic?

Poured resins, possibly from two sources, and very similar to some of the Elgate stuff, but not quite the same, and one converted to a bottle opener, note the card 'craft' stuff behind, and more expensive laser-enhanced glass lump of keepsake, to the right.

N is for Novelty . . . Guards - Larger

Well, Nutcracker Suites are being cancelled left, right and centre, Sugar Plum Fairies are on furlough, Babes aren't  marching in the woods; 2020's turned out to be such a shitter, I thought we'd have a few novelty guards to brighten things up, and because I threatened to do so, around this time, when Peter Evans sent some earlier in the year!

Fridge Magnet; Fridge-Magnet; Guards Band; Guards Division; Guards Drummer; Guards Musician; Guardsman Bauble; Guardsman Toy Soldier; Guardsmen; Household Division; Key Chain; Key Chains; Key Ring; Key Ring Conversion; Key Ring Torch; Key Ring Tourch; Key Rings; Key-Fob; Key-Fobs; Novelty Figurine; Novelty Figurines; Novelty Guards; Novelty Guardsmen; Novelty Key Ring; Novelty Toy; Pencil Top; Pencil Toppers; Puckator; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com;
So these are the medium-sized chaps, all about 45-60-odd millimeters. We have seen some before as they came in, but here they all are together. From the left;

  • ·         Probably actually a circus ringmaster/compare he's resin - mostly!
  • ·         PVC or even silicon-rubber key-ring
  • ·         LED Torch in mixed materials
  • ·         Resin guardsman who was probably a fridge-magnet once?
  • ·         Silicon rubber key ring who was designed as a pencil-top first
  • ·         Key-ring or Christmas tree hanging-decoration/figural bauble in chromium-plated polystyrene.

You can see how the left-hand key-ring began life as or intended for pencil-topping, or - indeed - pens; all writing instruments matter! And the material is a soft, squidgy silicon-rubber, against the stiffer rubber of the chap on the right.

The new one (who came from Chris Smith or Peter Evans earlier in the year I think) in the middle has the remains of a sting/ribbon loop, but whether it was for keys or Christmas trees only god knows . . . have you got one coming out of the attic any-day now loyal readers, or are you carrying one around with your keys?

I think both of these (lower pair) were new this year (same likely contributors) and while the one on the left does stand-up, some damage to the small of his back points to the careful removal of a magnet and hot-wax [glue-gun] glue I think?

The one on the right seems to be resin, but he has peculiar soft areas on his feet, almost as if someone had rebuilt the soles with Blue-Tac and painted over it, so he may have been removed from a larger vignette, maybe he's a band-master in one of those 'Christmas Village' band-stands, or something like that?

I nearly left him in the Guards, but after umming-&-arring for a while I put him with the circus stuff for now, although as well as Victorian bandstands, he might fit the bill of a foreign nations' police/traffic-police force uniform, making him more of a tourist-memento piece?

Seen before and I can't remember the branding (Puckator - I looked it up!), but it was looked at better then I think. There is a little pull-out tab at his waist-rear, to prevent the battery being in contact and running down, while he plays a bloody annoying little tune every time you press the button!

Largest were posted earlier this year!

H is for Here's a Bit of Fun Again!

And here's one of those Toy Fair reports I've dragged out, but only the four months, this time though? I must be slipping; I'll leave you to decide if it's date sensitive; and I really should have ignored everything-else to get it out in a more timely manner? Once you've reached the inevitable conclusion you can have a laugh at TJF and his pomposity!

I shot these as I had obtained the guardsman (below) a few weeks earlier in a mixed lot and it's always nice to ID something, even if it's something a bit frivolous! They are similar to some of the earlier stuff on this Blog, being simple constructs of basic wooden shapes, with the addition of fabric, wool and coloured rope highlights.

Fiesta Crafts (for that is who they are) do a range of pencil-topped pencils, fridge magnets and stand-alone figurines, following a similar pattern but with or without holes drilled in them or magnets glued to a flat area.

All the common tropes are covered; guardsman, pirate, princess, dragon etc . . . and seasonal stuff as seen in the left-hand of these alternate counter displays, I'll be looking out for the snowman!

I was enthusiastic-enough about them to garner me a free gift of a knight; is he a Templer, a Teutonic or a Toughguy? I don't know enough about my crusaders to commit to an answer on that one, but it's definitely a cross on his surcoat - unless he's a steam-punk robot with an integrated arrow-slit in his chest!

The guardsman who had come in with a mixed charity-shop lot only a few weeks earlier is the magnetic variant; he has no pencil-hole but a flatter area on his back with a small, inexpensive, composite-material, disc-magnet.

That's Fiesta Crafts, they're out there, they're fun, especially if you have young kids, or grandchildren, nephews/nieces &etc. I can see them filling the same story-telling role as finger-puppets too?

N is for New Novelties - Chris's Parcel II

It's really only by collecting everything that you can get the 'bigger (or best) picture' and to that end I have all sorts of junk, crud and novelty crap in the pile, and some not so crap novelties, thus I am always happy when other people send the Blog junk, crud or novelties, and whether of crap or quality! Here's some of the more esoteric stuff in Chris's most recent parcel.

Cracker Novelties; Cracker Toy; Cracker Toys; Firefighters; Firemen; Magnetic Toy Figures; Magnetic Toy Soldiers; Matchbox US Infantry; Mettoy Playcraft; Mixed Novelties; Mixed Playthings; Mixed Toy Figurines; Playcraft Toys; Rays Toys; Rays Trees; Robot Grandisers; Robots; Rolling Novelties; Rolling Toys; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Trumpton;
I can't for the life of me remember who these are attributed to, but I know I've posted their A-Z entry, so I'll look them up when I'm up the Library to post this and put the brand in these brackets; here (Ace Acme - same poses but colour variations and a new green)!

They were capsule toys and tend to turn-up in ones or two's, although I think one of the US dealers was selling them by the handful back in the 1990's, and I hope I have both new colour variants and a new pose in this trio.

These were also a welcome addition to the vaults, I have a few already, and I know they are Christmas Cracker inserts, but there are three new poses here (there's a whole post coming) and a matching, larger-scaled Chinasaur who is new to me, and extends the 'story' of these otherwise unremarkable, unattributed mini'mals.

This is fun despite not being a figure at all really, rather a graphic representation of a . . . err . . . penguin? But he comes after this post (yes- the title was diabolical!) the other day and is probably the 1970's grandparent of the newer, all polyethylene ones, having a steel-bar axle for ethylene wheels with a styrene body.

I vaguely remember posting a link to these a few years ago, some memories of a mail-order catalogue's scans . . . or screen-caps from a .pdf? Anyway, here they are in all their flat, floppy glory . . . fridge magnets!

AND - continuing the running trope in Plastic Warrior magazine recently - the 'orange force' are all left-handed, left-hooking, left paws! Due to their all having being mirror-flipped vertically at the printers! Brilliant!

Pugh, Pugh, Barney McGrew, Cuthbert, Dibble, Grub!

How cool are these? Cool enough for firefighting school; that's how! Pencil tops of Trumpton firemen (they were definitely firemen, not firefighters in those days!) and I'm not sure they are among the six named in the ditty, being the station commander and his boss? I'll check with Youtube, there's bound to be a clip there? Later . . . Captain Flack on the left and Barney McGrew on the right!

I recognised the way the trees were attached to their bases as being the same as the trackside accessories from the old Mettoy Playcraft plastic-railways of our childhood, and knowing there were Hong Kong copies of it (our childhood track (all village-fête buys) was more HK silver than Playcraft red!) I looked them up in Bill B's catalogue, and sure enough, here they are; from Rays Ltd., (Wah Hing Industrial Mansion) of Kowloon - another one nailed!

The scale is more G-gauge ('Big') than anything else, which is, the Rays' stuff; the Playcraft rolling-stock was all smaller, aping Brio. And looking at the inner set's track (black), this would appear to be more compatible with Big Train or Timpo's Wild West trains than the Playcraft stuff? But the outer track (blue) does seem to have the Playcraft wheel-channel system/design. I think Tomy had a similar system?

Cheers to Chris, all found a happy home here now! Coming next - some other highlights.

R is for Round-up - Fish and Sea Creatures

Time for the occasional look at fish and fishy things, most of a rack-toy nature, but some of more substance and two of such exquisiteness it's a joy to have them on the blog, but first a return to some we've seen before here;

44 Pieces; 45644; 56 Pieces; Aneco; Angel Fish; Bagged Toy; Blow Fish; Creature of the Ocean; Creatures of the Sea; Creatures of the World; D&D Distribution Inc.; DeAgostini; Dolphin; Fish and Coral; Fish Tank Model; Fish Tank Ornament; Fish Tank Toy; Imperial Toys; Ocean Animals; Ocean Fish; Ocean Sea Life; Old Plastic Toys; Piranhas & Co.; Plastic Toy; Plastic Toy Figures; Plastic Toys; Predatory Fish; Red Tailed Catfish; Reef Fish; Scully & Scully; Scully And Scully; Sea Creatures; Sea Life; Sea Lions; Sealife; Sharks; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; TM; Toy Major; Toymajor; Vintage Plastic Figures; Vintage Sea Life Toys; Whales;
A while ago, probably the last time we looked at them, we saw a bunch of these, presented to the Blog by either Peter Evans or Brain Carrick, I can't remember, but whichever of the PW-founders it was, the other then gave me some more, from the same set!

So the above is now definitely courtesy of both Brian and Peter, and represents a more complete sample of a set with an unknown sculpt-count! Thanks to both. Simpler painting on most allows (within the budget) for more careful and multi-coloured decoration on the three reef/angel-fish types - top left.

44 Pieces; 45644; 56 Pieces; Aneco; Angel Fish; Bagged Toy; Blow Fish; Creature of the Ocean; Creatures of the Sea; Creatures of the World; D&D Distribution Inc.; DeAgostini; Dolphin; Fish and Coral; Fish Tank Model; Fish Tank Ornament; Fish Tank Toy; Imperial Toys; Ocean Animals; Ocean Fish; Ocean Sea Life; Old Plastic Toys; Piranhas & Co.; Plastic Toy; Plastic Toy Figures; Plastic Toys; Predatory Fish; Red Tailed Catfish; Reef Fish; Scully & Scully; Scully And Scully; Sea Creatures; Sea Life; Sea Lions; Sealife; Sharks; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; TM; Toy Major; Toymajor; Vintage Plastic Figures; Vintage Sea Life Toys; Whales;
The mould-tools clearly survive and are still in production, this set was donated to the blog in the last year or two, by Brian Berke, having been acquired the other side of the pond where it's wearing Imperial's moniker (which is probably the brand under which the older ones hit the shops - they having returned to the original contractor?).

Obviously some of the contents are as above (with no, or one-colour paint highlights) which means . . .

44 Pieces; 45644; 56 Pieces; Aneco; Angel Fish; Bagged Toy; Blow Fish; Creature of the Ocean; Creatures of the Sea; Creatures of the World; D&D Distribution Inc.; DeAgostini; Dolphin; Fish and Coral; Fish Tank Model; Fish Tank Ornament; Fish Tank Toy; Imperial Toys; Ocean Animals; Ocean Fish; Ocean Sea Life; Old Plastic Toys; Piranhas & Co.; Plastic Toy; Plastic Toy Figures; Plastic Toys; Predatory Fish; Red Tailed Catfish; Reef Fish; Scully & Scully; Scully And Scully; Sea Creatures; Sea Life; Sea Lions; Sealife; Sharks; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; TM; Toy Major; Toymajor; Vintage Plastic Figures; Vintage Sea Life Toys; Whales;
. . . that the sculpt-total can go up a bit! Adding a shark, a dolphin, an octopus and a sea-horse. But; with not all the animals in the Peter/Brain C sample being found in the Brain B bag, and with four new sculpts in the bag, we have to assume we may still be looking for more poses in the 'whole' set?

44 Pieces; 45644; 56 Pieces; Aneco; Angel Fish; Bagged Toy; Blow Fish; Creature of the Ocean; Creatures of the Sea; Creatures of the World; D&D Distribution Inc.; DeAgostini; Dolphin; Fish and Coral; Fish Tank Model; Fish Tank Ornament; Fish Tank Toy; Imperial Toys; Ocean Animals; Ocean Fish; Ocean Sea Life; Old Plastic Toys; Piranhas & Co.; Plastic Toy; Plastic Toy Figures; Plastic Toys; Predatory Fish; Red Tailed Catfish; Reef Fish; Scully & Scully; Scully And Scully; Sea Creatures; Sea Life; Sea Lions; Sealife; Sharks; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; TM; Toy Major; Toymajor; Vintage Plastic Figures; Vintage Sea Life Toys; Whales;
I must confess I can't now remember which of Brian C or Peter these came from either, I suspect Brian? Some seem to be meant to be pencil-tops, but the hole is a little small, so unless they came with some narrower pencils (for colouring?) it might be part of the production process or that they once had stands of some kind, none of the possibilities account for the fact that two have no hole, however?

If you found it on its own, you'd think the seal was from a newer 'China' set, but together as a group they obviously have some age, and each has a capital-letter marking but nothing else.

Modern rack-toy, although technically only 'pocket money' toy being that most annoying of phenomena, the Blind Bag. Also, they are not cheap, but still around in Sainsbury's and McColl's (Martin's) I think, possibly on a second series now? I bought one when I was feeling flush, just over a year ago, as a sample.

The models are very good though, AND - being manufactured from a cold, clammy silicon type polymer - are very, very fish-like, lying cold and 'damp' in your hand as if you've just pulled it out of the ocean! Decoration on the other hand is on the cheap-side!

44 Pieces; 45644; 56 Pieces; Aneco; Angel Fish; Bagged Toy; Blow Fish; Creature of the Ocean; Creatures of the Sea; Creatures of the World; D&D Distribution Inc.; DeAgostini; Dolphin; Fish and Coral; Fish Tank Model; Fish Tank Ornament; Fish Tank Toy; Imperial Toys; Ocean Animals; Ocean Fish; Ocean Sea Life; Old Plastic Toys; Piranhas & Co.; Plastic Toy; Plastic Toy Figures; Plastic Toys; Predatory Fish; Red Tailed Catfish; Reef Fish; Scully & Scully; Scully And Scully; Sea Creatures; Sea Life; Sea Lions; Sealife; Sharks; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; TM; Toy Major; Toymajor; Vintage Plastic Figures; Vintage Sea Life Toys; Whales;
The whale (it's not a country Mr. Trump!) definitely came from Brian Carrick, and is a lot of fun, it's obviously a bath toy aimed at younger kids/infants, and is a sort of hybrid between the larger krill-feeders with a hint ('attempt' is too kind a word!) at killer whale in the markings, but for HO pirates, I can see a future for it! It's a blow-mould/squeezy toy, and may once have had a squeak, but is silent now!

The resin block may have been a charity shop purchase, or it may have come in with a mixed lot. Similar in execution to the commoner fridge magnets, it's reminded me there are a few on the side of the boiler, I'll shoot them and tack-them on at the end of this post . . . as if they were there all along!

Colouring on the fish is very clever; it's all technique (air-brush and sweeping brush-strokes) which come together very realistically.

I think the blow-fish and the yellow sea-horse are Phidal, although from which movie is anyone's guess; unless they have small children in which case they will not only know which movie, but the characters' names and songs! But with The Little Mermaid, Dory and the other one, if you don't have little kids your guess is as good as mine!

But the blow-fish is not terribly cartoony, so can go with all the other fish, even the sea-horse isn't that daft; eyes maybe? The other sea-horse is an older polyethylene one, probably from a rack-toy type set.

This set - currently being offered on Amazon under an Aneco branding - seems to pull elements (or actual models) from several other sets for a 44 piece-count (although the meta-data says 56 pieces!). You can recognise several of the sculpts seen above, and some from the next image below, but whether they are copies, or bought-in from several contract-manufacturers and offered as 'a set' is open to closer investigation of the contents.

An investigation I'm not going to do as they weren't cheap enough! Which is not to say they weren't reasonable, but priced as a birthday-present rather than a going-home or trip-to-the-dentist gift! They also do similar large bags of insets, dinosaurs and farm or zoo animals. Note; the old Britains seaweed piracy from the Mini Sets has been given a make-over!

This is from D&D Distribution's catalogue, last year, and has some animals similar to the Aneco set above and a couple similar to other sets.

As I've explained in similar posts in past RTM's (so apologies if you've read this before!), a lot of the old Hong Kong (now just 'CHINA') manufacturers have a catalogue of 'standard' products which they take round the international Toy Fairs and then contractors (shippers, importers, jobbers) or contracting brands like Hasbro, Mattel or Tomy can grab a sort of 'Pick & Mix' to make up cheaper sets, or provide a few trees, rocks or barbed-wire in a higher-end play set or whatever.

Here the D&D mix is probably from one source, in the case of the Aneco bag I suspect several manufacturers were approached?

Another one from Mr. Berke across the pond, four cetaceans and two sharks (I think, otherwise it may be 3 and 3?), the old 1970's sculpt of flat tree (or a sub-copy) and the space-occupying blow-moulded rock!

Branded to Toy Major they should be available this side of the pond too; if you look around.

Funnily-enough I was only talking about TM the other day with Peter Evans who told me that Toy Major still offer a Sale-or-Return to their sub'ies, which has otherwise all but disappeared from the industry (it used to be the norm), which gives them an advantage over the Jaru's, Henbrandt's, Imperial's, Lloyd's, PlayWrite's and Grossman's of this world as a sub-contractor/end-user knows they can get their money back if the line tanks.

These are definitely not rack-toys! Also from Brain B, these were in Scully & Scully's window, probably with a pretty price on them, but then - they are very pretty!

I think the one on the left is porcelain, but it could be enamelled silver or brass, while the one on the right looks silver too, but may be a Christmas ornament-type glass blowing? You can just see an equally exquisite sea-anemone off to the right. When I win the lottery, I shall be putting my order in, I just need to start buying lottery tickets . . . Doh!

Recent additions (Chris Smith and charity shops) include an Iwako or similar dolphin and Safari elephant seal with a generic tortoise and one half of a similar animal, who, if it had its other half, would be a novelty 'snapper' I think.

There should be a red crab here which came in the other week but I seem to have sorted it into that strangest of zones; the god-knows-where box! It can wait for next time; it can't have gone far?

As well as four fridge magnets I'd forgotten there was another full one on top of the boiler, this one being painted wood pegged into a lump of resin coral. One of them is a glossy finish and I couldn't not get a reflection, but this was the best shot! It's a ceramic or terracotta to the resin or 'polystone' of the other three.

Thanks to Brian B, Brian C and Peter Evans for large chunks of the above, Chris Smith, Adrian Little and Jim for bits-&-bobs along with anyone else who passes odds and sods to the Blog, it's all appreciated, even if; as in the case of sea-life or insects; a bit occasional in the posting - saving now for the next round-up; two have already come-in!

N is for Novelty Highlanders!

Let's get the oddities out of the way first!

Alongside the Dewar's Drum Major we've seen recently and included for sizing, we have a rather nice Hong Kong piper, based on the Britains Herald pose (as most copies are) but with the novel change of headgear to a side-cap, his pipes are also further spread with a thicker connecting sash (which probably has a special name but I don't know it!) sans tassels.

Then there are three versions of key-ring, the one on the right being a heavier sculpt in a softer PVC to the other two, along with a mini-key-ring version approximately 1:72nd scale.

The three larger key rings with the Herald donor; I converted the first one years ago, although a full'ish 54mm, with no base he always looked a bit smaller and hung around even while I was a small scale 'purist', I used to always cut the key ring away, I now realise this was a kind of sacrilege (unless you add a base maybe?) so now I leave the key ring - or whatever remains of it, as it the case of the other two!

Bog-standard tourist items in the 1970's and 1980's there must be quite a few of them or things like them around the place and I'm sure that away from our branch of the hobby there will be key-ring (-fob, -chain...) collectors with lots of paint/plastic/sculpt-variants and/or different sizes?

As I'm equally sure the eraser/novelty-sharpener collecting people have a few more of these? I don't know where the head came from but it doesn't seem to have come from the earlier Zang/Herald chap, who has the long tapes or ribbons at the back. And his legs have veered away from the donor's design!

No branding clue, just a simple 'HONG KONG', and again probably sold as a generic tourist trinket from the kiosks of Central London or the gift shops of lesser or second-tier museums and visitor attractions.

I also have this in the collection, although I ask myself "Why?" every time I see it! I guess I like the clever impression of depth-of-field attained by the laser-cut laminate glued to its own background - they even line-up the shadows! A fridge magnet; it's probably still around, or quite contemporary, although I've had it for ten years or more?
