About Me

I’m a 60-year-old Aspergic gardening CAD-Monkey. Sardonic, cynical and with the political leanings of a social reformer, I’m also a toy and model figure collector, particularly interested in the history of plastics and plastic toys. Other interests are history, current affairs, modern art, and architecture, gardening and natural history. I love plain chocolate, fireworks and trees, but I don’t hug them, I do hug kittens. I hate ignorance, when it can be avoided, so I hate the 'educational' establishment and pity the millions they’ve failed with teaching-to-test and rote 'learning' and I hate the short-sighted stupidity of the entire ruling/industrial elite, with their planet destroying fascism and added “buy-one-get-one-free”. Likewise, I also have no time for fools and little time for the false crap we're all supposed to pretend we haven't noticed, or the games we're supposed to play. I will 'bite the hand that feeds', to remind it why it feeds.

A is for And so to Bed . . . No! 'London' - A is for And so to London . . .

. . . where we three and thirty, and thirty-three, and more that thirty-more did meet again!

And even some new faces turned-up and a bloody good time was had by all! The weather would have taken some beating (especially after what it gave us today!), the company was fine, the merchandise was piled-high and smelt of old plastic, it had to be the Annual (pandemic's allowing) Plastic Warrior Toy Soldier Show!

Now, I'm not going to bore you with the minutiae; if you were there you know how good it was, if you've been before you have a good idea what you missed, and don't want to be told (it was better - better than ever!), and if you've never been and didn't go, you probably shouldn't be reading this! But one of the features of the show, is the annual release of the latest 'Special Publication'  . . . or even two - in a good year!

Well, this was a vintage year, so we got four! And if you missed them, or the show, or both, I'm here to plug them!

Two volumes on the die-cast accessories that came with or for toy soldiers from the same makers, and the Modern Army Series from Lone Star was one, with all the variations, even the daft blue and chrome ones, a very useful addition to the library.

Crescent was the other maker getting the once over and I must confess I didn't know all the vehicles in the fleet, the M109 for instance, looks excellent, and how many are there in 54mm-compatable, die-cast?

This - however - is essential reading for any British plastics aficionado, it's years since the last black & white version was released, and this all new, all colour edition is a real treat, with lots of new stuff, hard to know where to start, and this is only a quick promo, but yeah . . . if you didn't get one yesterday, you need to get one!

And if the Trojan work is welcome, this in-depth look at BR Moulds is a fantastic volume, some of us suspected it was in the works, the ephemera hinted at in the previous articles we've seen in the magazine clearly pointed at 'more to come' and here it all is, and I mean 'all'; full listings, most known figures, now illustrated with multiple examples, a few unknowns thrown in for good measure, side-by-side comparisons and much conjecture - it is not only a joy of a quick-read, it's genuinely fascinating, and I can't recommend it highly enough.

For all four volumes the contact details are many and available as soon as you've read this;

I'll also plug Matt Thier's White Tower Miniatures, Matt was one of the old faces seen yesterday, and he has two catalogues out at the moment;

Last year's Dark Ages catalogue is still available, but it was announced about now I think, back then, so may be in short supply. A very nice range, I follow the Faceplant page and when he posts a bunch en-mass with all the different shields and weapons, they are stunning. There's over 120 figure-castings now, several horses . . . and a bear!

This is  the new for 2022 listing of the Wild West range, and while I'm not a metal guy, I was tempted by some of the many character figures from TV, the movies and real life (each gets a thumbnail biography and either a still of the movie poster, or a picture of the real person), there are also character figures of named Native Americans, a lovely wagon and all the normal stuff.

Matt also showed me footage of a range of slot & peg-together building which are on the way, with removable roofs and interior floors etc.

Matt is findable here;

I also literally ran-into the  proprietor of Soldiers in Silloth as I was taking his flyer from the front table at the show, and promised to plug his toy soldier museum, and as I'm covering everything else (above) here, I'll give you the cover and a bit of blurb and try to do an A-Z entry with a bit more, I'm also going to try and visit this summer as it looks like an excellent day out!

The museum seems to contain all types of toy soldiers including metal and plastic, with cabinets of sample figures alongside vignettes and dioramas, and of course, it's just off the Hadrien's Wall way, so you could include it in a longer walking/camping holiday or make it part of a long-weekend?

S is for 'Special Publication' and Solido Belge

For various reasons, not least the passing of my father, I've got a bit behind with the old 'housekeeping' including both January's Toy Fair stuff and the fallout from Plastic Warrior's show in Twicker's back in May, it will all happen soon, although my mental-diary says a new PW mag' is due any day now? So that will be slipped, high, into the crowded queue!

Belgian Football Players; Belgian Toy Figurines; Belgian Toy Soldiers; Daniel Lepers; ISBN - 1 - 900898 - 42 - X; ISBN 1 900898 42 X; Plastic Warrior Magazine; Plastic Warrior Special; Published by Plastic Warrior; PW Magazine; PW Show; PW Special - Solido Belge; PW Special Publication; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Solido; Solido Belge; Vintage Belgian Soldiers; Vintage Belgian Toys;
However and having missed it at the show (where it sold-out, I believe?), I managed to pause briefly at PW Towers on my way back from the Smoke the other week, and picked up a copy of Daniel Lepers excellent little monograph of the 55/60mm output of Solido Belge.

When I say 'little', it's 27pp's and a back cover which is a wraparound short of the 32 pages of the quarterly mag', but, being dedicated to one maker; it's quite a fulsome overview. And when I say 'pause' It's a mile to the command-centre and a mile back to Woking station, which - knackered as I was - after a day in London, shows what efforts I'll go to, in order to deliver the news to those of you [Philistines] who still don't subscribe!

Belgian Football Players; Belgian Toy Figurines; Belgian Toy Soldiers; Daniel Lepers; ISBN - 1 - 900898 - 42 - X; ISBN 1 900898 42 X; Plastic Warrior Magazine; Plastic Warrior Special; Published by Plastic Warrior; PW Magazine; PW Show; PW Special - Solido Belge; PW Special Publication; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Solido; Solido Belge; Vintage Belgian Soldiers; Vintage Belgian Toys;
The news being; unless you are very specific in your collecting theme/s, you need this!

I have been picking these (the figures) up since the 2010 PW show, and thought I was doing quite well with a blue one and a yellow policeman and a couple of other interesting pieces to go with a handful of 'khaki infantry', but oh-boy! I still have a long way to go! However I now have a wonderful guide which will also play the part of checklist.

Solido - better known for their die-cast vehicle range, which tended to use Starlux figures where figures were needed or required, had previously produced these under the Solido Belge moniker, and there is stuff in this publication which was new to me, ceremonials, footballers even some Wild West (which I suspect we will hear more of in PW in the future?) and enough motorcycle variants to shake a big stick at!

I can't recommend Mr. Lepers' work strongly enough!

This is the man who was complaining earlier this week that the Electoral Commission, were all '...from the political class' and 'look at them...all establishment people', this man who was a City B'wanker for many years before spending the next 20-odd as err . . . a politician . . . you don't GET more establishment than b'wankers!

He's also been barred from his 'local' for an apparent hit-and-run - on the landlord's car - and been covered in flavoured milkshake! Meanwhile his belief in democracy doesn't extend to Channel 4 and he won't answer questions on his desire to close the NHS; it's all from the book according to Trump.

Toys . . . we all need more toys . . .

Off the back of the show two weeks ago were two new 'Specials', one on Speedwell which I will do a review of when I return to full Blogging, and another (above) on Solido's plastic figures which sold-out before I got to it, but is still available from the details below.

Paul - the Editor - kindly sent me the above image and the following press release (my italics!);

"The Book of Speedwell
A completely revised and updated publication covering all the known plastic figures by Speedwell. Many more photos, including many boxed sets, and newly discovered information on this, perhaps not so minor maker. Includes pages from a price list c:1960; as well as a complete analysis of their farm range by Barney Brown.
(64 pages, full colour).

Solido Belge
Newly written for PW by Daniel Lepers, this is a comprehensive look at the plastic figures produced by this well-know Belgian company.
(24 pages, full colour)."

Lincolnshire Louts

UK readers will be well aware of this story as it has been covered by all the Daily's, terrestrial TV and most radio, but for the foreign readership; vandals broke into the Welland Academy in Stamford, where the Market Deeping Model Railway Club had set up for a show last Sunday, and smashed everything.

But this wasn't the usual tip over a few tables, pluck some Merit trees, nick the mars bars and coke from the club fridge and break-into the petty-cash box, this was a prolonged orgy of destruction in which hand-built brass locomotive models which had taken up to 25 years to finish were individually destroyed (some by being thrown at a basketball hoop), every table was overturned, every display was comprehensively trashed.

In the week since there has been a vast wave of sympathy (led by one Sir Rod Stewart, a popular singer I believe!) and the last time I looked £61k had been pledged from all over the world.

Four youths were arrested hiding in the school, one parent has already appeared in the tabloids with the usual 'I can't believe it of my lovely boy' and we all know nothing will come of it as far as retribution goes, meanwhile the lifetime's work of several of hobbyists in a - probably - close group, has gone forever.

The parent - of course - seems to have no explanation for why she didn't know where her 'cherub' was at three-o'clock in the morning!!

Bit tight this week on the charity-shop front (spent-out in Twickenham! ), but I picked this trio up over the week, the Usbourne 'Model Cars' is one of those curious things where photographs are rendered as commercial artwork and is of limited use, but fills a gap in the library as far as toy books go, I think their 'Model Railways' volume is in the garage and there's an Aircraft one too, still to be found.

The Bear book is superb, I have quite a few as they all add to the whole, but this one is particularly good on company histories and ID'ing the various makers, and is very well illustrated.

While the Casell's 'History of Warfare' is beautifully written, but tends to illustrations you will have seen before - if you follow such works, but it's about the text and Mr. Humble's fluid style is easy to read, yet get's to the 'nub of it' very succinctly.

For instance - I've read about Salamis many times (it was my O-level graphics paper's project - design a set of Salamis commemorative stamps!), but this is the first book that made me realise one of the major factors on the day was that the Persians (on expedition) were carrying masts, yards, rigging and sails, while the Greeks, who prepared 'in the morning' for battle, left theirs on the beach, so their ships were lighter, less likely to get caught-up in mêlées and more manoeuvrable, as well as being less top-heavy; so less likely to roll-over when rammed or ramming.

Likewise his coverage of the end of the Roman Empire (particularly the Western empire) is very clear and easy to retain; poor old Marcus Aurelius - he came so close, then all those horrid little Farage's, Erdogan's and Orban's stabbing each-other, for a  six-month stint in the hot seat, if the palace guard or the oligarchs let them live another six months!

As I'm doing books, these have also come in over the last few months, I may have Blogged one or both, I can't remember! The bear book (Christmas/January?) was cheap, and it's not bad, but a bit 'coffee table' if you know what I mean, while the brands book (a few weeks ago) is very 'coffee table', but useful none-the-less, especially when there's no internet, where you can otherwise find most of the stuff within its covers!

It's McDonald's, whose premiums I don't pay much attention to, but I'll make an exception for a semi-realistic (it was a cartoon!) Snowy from Tin Tin! The head turns but the legs are hollowed-out and open from the inner sides- you win some you lose some!

I must get a better stabbing-guy, or dust the one I'm using!
