About Me

I’m a 60-year-old Aspergic gardening CAD-Monkey. Sardonic, cynical and with the political leanings of a social reformer, I’m also a toy and model figure collector, particularly interested in the history of plastics and plastic toys. Other interests are history, current affairs, modern art, and architecture, gardening and natural history. I love plain chocolate, fireworks and trees, but I don’t hug them, I do hug kittens. I hate ignorance, when it can be avoided, so I hate the 'educational' establishment and pity the millions they’ve failed with teaching-to-test and rote 'learning' and I hate the short-sighted stupidity of the entire ruling/industrial elite, with their planet destroying fascism and added “buy-one-get-one-free”. Likewise, I also have no time for fools and little time for the false crap we're all supposed to pretend we haven't noticed, or the games we're supposed to play. I will 'bite the hand that feeds', to remind it why it feeds.

3 is for 'Men From Outer Space'!

I think we may have seen this briefly in a past show-report post, as a carded set, but today we'll flesh it out a bit with a few loose figures, after Jim gave me the missing pose last weekend, well, weekend before last! The set is from the collection of James Opie, but it wasn't in the small-scale lot I acquired from him eleven years ago, but rather one I picked up at a PW show or Sandown park a couple of few years ago.

3 Men From Outer Space; Aliens; Blow Mould; Blow Moulded Aliens; Blow Moulded Spacemen; Blow Moulded Toy; Giant Aliens; Giant Sets; Giant Spacemen; Googly Eyes; Lenticular Eyes; Made in Hong Kong; Polyethylene Toy Figures; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Space Toys; Space Warriors; Spacemen;
From Mr. Opie's standard pencil-annotation on the back of the header-card we know they were bought for a Shilling in Northhampton, in May 1966. You may have recognised them as being the same sculpts as Giant's mini's, or at least those credited to Giant, I've seen no actual evidence of them being Giant, and the Giant astronauts are quite different, the Aliens may only be gum-ball prizes? But for the rest of the post I'll refer to them as Giant for ease.

These came out a few years after we know Giant to have been flourishing, so whether Giant or gum-ball, the little injection-moulded ones were probably the donors for these hollow, blow-moulded giants!

Feb. 2022 - I now have lots of Giant marked ones, albeit only in World Toy House packaging!

3 Men From Outer Space; Aliens; Blow Mould; Blow Moulded Aliens; Blow Moulded Spacemen; Blow Moulded Toy; Giant Aliens; Giant Sets; Giant Spacemen; Googly Eyes; Lenticular Eyes; Made in Hong Kong; Polyethylene Toy Figures; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Space Toys; Space Warriors; Spacemen;
The three - seemingly - commoner poses (see last picture), the middle one is missing his eyes; small lenticular pictures which are commonly known as 'googly-eyes'. They do go missing, and while you can replace them with modern blister-types (with a free-moving black polymer 'seed') from craft shops (if any craft shops are left! Try The Works), people do attempt to sell them on evilBay as "Original" or "Mint" with modern blister googly-eyes, they should have these lenticulars.

Mine are by two or even three makers/sources, the middle one (gun-slinger) being the most obvious with a larger Hong Kong running from ear-flap to ear-flap, the one on the right (detector/sensor) matches the carded set, and the unmarked/barely-marked one on the left (com's unit) may be, but it's unclear.

3 Men From Outer Space; Aliens; Blow Mould; Blow Moulded Aliens; Blow Moulded Spacemen; Blow Moulded Toy; Giant Aliens; Giant Sets; Giant Spacemen; Googly Eyes; Lenticular Eyes; Made in Hong Kong; Polyethylene Toy Figures; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Space Toys; Space Warriors; Spacemen;
You can see how my tatty one has shorter, higher-held arms, re-tooled knee-joints, shorter ray-gun barrels &etc. He's also a flat-grey plastic as opposed to the clearly silver shade of the carded set and the other loose pair.

3 Men From Outer Space; Aliens; Blow Mould; Blow Moulded Aliens; Blow Moulded Spacemen; Blow Moulded Toy; Giant Aliens; Giant Sets; Giant Spacemen; Googly Eyes; Lenticular Eyes; Made in Hong Kong; Polyethylene Toy Figures; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Space Toys; Space Warriors; Spacemen;
Despite owning the set for a couple of years, photographing it on a traders stand prior to owning it, and downloading the original feebleBay images a few years ago, I only noticed (or registered?) the little cut-outs for the alien-atmosphere tanks (they may be pure methane, or LPG . . . Lovely Pure Gravy!) after shooting for this post, while putting them away; they help prevent the card warping too much.

3 Men From Outer Space; Aliens; Blow Mould; Blow Moulded Aliens; Blow Moulded Spacemen; Blow Moulded Toy; Giant Aliens; Giant Sets; Giant Spacemen; Googly Eyes; Lenticular Eyes; Made in Hong Kong; Polyethylene Toy Figures; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Space Toys; Space Warriors; Spacemen;
A feeBay shot from four years ago. I've been following/studying (?) these for years, and always the same three poses (those on the card) show up, but in this shot there is clearly a fourth pose, the guy waving his Pyrotomic Disintegrator Rifle in his right hand, with his left hand on his hip, it isn't a Giant pose per se?

Whether all the Giant poses were up-scaled, or whether there's another sources for a third/fourth type I don't know, but having missed this lot in 2014, the search goes on!

To which I should add that the missing Giant poses are holding rifle across chest to left, ditto; to the right and ditto; slightly raised. We will have mine up here (or over on the But Is It Giant Blog) eventually, but I haven't found their box in the pile yet.

Now on the Giant Blog under this tag -  https://butisitgiant.blogspot.com/search/label/Aliens

3 years later in 2021, they 'discovered' there were four poses over at Alphadrome, if only they paid attention to this blog, instead of just occasionally stealing images!

F is for Follow-up - Lone ★ Star's Cork Gun Targets

Sometimes the gods conspire to really screw us, sometimes they smile slyly at us from afar, only letting us know they are still toying with us, but happen to be in a generous mood. Last week, they were enjoying the storms they had unleashed upon us, and let me get away with a 'Brucey Bonus'!

I had dug out the Lone Star 'Cork 45 Pistol Shooting Game' figures from the storage sample (as you may have gathered by now, I dug out the whole Lone Star box!) where I had said I might have other poses or colours, by some stroke of luck, I had a pair, and they were two different poses and a new colour.

But what had prompted the search was the fact that at Sandown Park, Jim (who otherwise wishes to remain anonymous) gave me a huge box of chuck-outs, among which was a third figure (20-points) to the two we looked at last time and in a new colour; red.

1155 Cork .45 Shooting Game; Cork .45 Pistol; DCMT; Die Cast Machine Tools; Game; Game Playing Pieces; Indian Novelty Toys; Indian Toy Figure; Indian Toy Figures; Lone Star; Lone Star 54mm Indians; Made in England; Native American Indian; Novelty Toy; Plastic Toy Figures; Play The Cork Fire Game; Polyethylene Toy Figures; Polyethylene Toy Figurines; Shooting Game; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Target Game; Toy Gun; Wild West;
While the gods smiled, they also decided that colours would duplicate, so while my two were the missing two poses from a random/possible five (odds on that?), I'm sure there may be blue or green to track down, mine being one yellow (5-points) and one red (40), but as far as poses goes; I think that's it now!

If your eyesight's even twice as good as mine you may still like to know the bases are numbered with an odd sequence of 5-15-20-30-40 points.

1155 Cork .45 Shooting Game; Cork .45 Pistol; DCMT; Die Cast Machine Tools; Game; Game Playing Pieces; Indian Novelty Toys; Indian Toy Figure; Indian Toy Figures; Lone Star; Lone Star 54mm Indians; Made in England; Native American Indian; Novelty Toy; Plastic Toy Figures; Play The Cork Fire Game; Polyethylene Toy Figures; Polyethylene Toy Figurines; Shooting Game; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Target Game; Toy Gun; Wild West;
On the left a late re-issue in unpainted glossy ethylene and on the right an earlyish example with all over paint, sandwiched between them two of the game-pieces for comparison, the only real difference is in the base with its diamond-mesh pattern overlaid with a smoothed-out number on the underside and the little wire-clip at the back edge.

The 5-pose seems to have had the back of his base extended a touch, too, but as with the Knights/Medievals from Lone Star, there are base variations for single poses within the line anyway, so it may be a question of which cavity had the work done to it?

1155 Cork .45 Shooting Game; Catalogue Image; Cork .45 Pistol; Game; Game Playing Pieces; Indian Toy Figure; Lone Star; Lone Star 54mm Indians; Made in England; Native American Indian; Novelty Toy; Plastic Toy Figures; Play The Cork Fire Game; Shooting Game; Silver Gleam; Target Game; Toy Gun; Wild West;
A reminder of the picture Paul Morehead kindly sent to the Blog with the original catalogue image of the game. It's clear the figures are different colours, but are they red & yellow, or red, yellow and something else?

'55 Thunderbird; 1904 Darraq; 1955 Thunderbird; 1:43rd Scale; Civilain Toy Figures; Civilain Toy Vehicles; Civilian Toy Vehicles; DCMT; Die Cast Machine Tools; Genevieve; Lone Star; Lone Star Impy; Lone Star Road Masters; Lone Star Road-masters; Lone Star Roadmasters; Made in England; Model T Ford; Novelty Toy; Plastic Toy Figures; Polyethylene Toy Figures; Polyethylene Toy Figurines; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Tootsie Toys; Tootsietoy;
Adding ID'd stuff to existing boxes meant these die-cast Roadmasters accessories (ID'd after/at May's show) went away in the Lone Star box, and as they may never come out again, I thought I'd just show you a red driver who has appeared since we last looked at them!

T is for That's That Bloke From May! The One With The Magnet!

Did you spot it earlier?

I'd done all the photo's, all the image editing and most of the blurb, when I thought "He looks familiar, but he's not quite Dinky? Hold on; I've thought that before . . .?" I thought! Dug the old pictures out and sure enough . . . he's now in the Reisler tub!

54mm, 40mm, Belgian Premiums; Bois Manu; Carded Toy; Danish Toy Figures; Dispatch Rider; Export Mascot; Farm Toys; Formeta Metal; Motorcycle Rider; Patrolman; Premium Toy Figures; Reisler; Reisler Export Figurines; Reisler Farm; Reisler Farm Toys; Reisler Flight Attendant; Reisler Guardsmen; Reisler Police; Reisler Soldiers; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Tourist Keepsake; Tourist Mascot; Tourist Trinket; Wheelbarrow;
Confirmation shot! The farm hand from Riesler was the figure used on that magnetic rubber advertising premium we saw a while back, from a Formeta. And; while I had found several Formeta's, none of which matched the logo, I seem to recall one or more were from the Low Countries?

54mm, 40mm, Belgian Premiums; Bois Manu; Carded Toy; Danish Toy Figures; Dispatch Rider; Export Mascot; Farm Toys; Formeta Metal; Motorcycle Rider; Patrolman; Premium Toy Figures; Reisler; Reisler Export Figurines; Reisler Farm; Reisler Farm Toys; Reisler Flight Attendant; Reisler Guardsmen; Reisler Police; Reisler Soldiers; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Tourist Keepsake; Tourist Mascot; Tourist Trinket; Wheelbarrow;
Where Reisler clearly had contacts - if not an active sales team - providing these (not uncommon) carded-sets for Bois Manu (a furniture and shop-fitting design house exhibiting at the Expo '58 World's Fair in Brussels) in Belgium. Clearly a tourist keepsake, similar to the stuff you found in London from Timpo or Cavendish, but smaller; these are all 40mm.

 From the left

Flight attendant; traffic cop; police detective/Gendarme (?); motorcycle patrol-man; ceremonial Guardsman and a 'Red Cross' nurse.

54mm, 40mm, Belgian Premiums; Bois Manu; Carded Toy; Danish Toy Figures; Dispatch Rider; Export Mascot; Farm Toys; Formeta Metal; Motorcycle Rider; Patrolman; Premium Toy Figures; Reisler; Reisler Export Figurines; Reisler Farm; Reisler Farm Toys; Reisler Flight Attendant; Reisler Guardsmen; Reisler Police; Reisler Soldiers; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Tourist Keepsake; Tourist Mascot; Tourist Trinket; Wheelbarrow;
From the left

Belgian Bois Manu Export figure; Danish version (both that softish but soluble polystyrene Reisler used), then three polyethylene (PE) figures; Danish policeman, 'Friendly Force' dispatch-rider; 'Enemy Force' dispatch rider.

D is for Diminutive Danish Dirt-diggers!

That's 'farmers' to you . . . sometimes the alliterative titles don't work properly, blame the pink-monkey on the keyboard!

When I posted Reynolds' HR Products a while back now, I said I had in the past wondered if they were Reisler and that I had a few more in storage, well, I had a disappointing one in storage! So I won't be doing a follow-up to them for the foreseeable future; in the meantime, here are the Reisler ones instead!

20mm Animals; 20mm Farm Toys; 20mm Figures; Danish Toy Figures; HO - OO; HO - OO Farm Models; HO - OO Figures; Made in Denmark; Model Railway Vignette; Railway Models; Railway Scenics; Reisler; Reisler Animal Toys; Reisler Farm; Reisler Farm Toys; Reisler Farmers; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com;
Typical boxed-set includes everything you would need for a little scene or a couple of vignettes on your model railway layout, in this case pigs being 'mucked-out' and a cow being milked while granny looks-on from a bright red bench!

20mm Animals; 20mm Farm Toys; 20mm Figures; Danish Toy Figures; HO - OO; HO - OO Farm Models; HO - OO Figures; Made in Denmark; Model Railway Vignette; Railway Models; Railway Scenics; Reisler; Reisler Animal Toys; Reisler Farm; Reisler Farm Toys; Reisler Farmers; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com;
My loose samples hint at at-least four other sets; horse, cow and chicken-based, along with a a pack of fencing? There is a website with all of them, which I'll post a link to at the end of this post when I upload it, on Monday.

At a true European HO 'scale', those chickens are shorter than cooked grains of rice, but about twice the height, and not as small as Noch's N-gauge cats!

20mm Animals; 20mm Farm Toys; 20mm Figures; Danish Toy Figures; HO - OO; HO - OO Farm Models; HO - OO Figures; Made in Denmark; Model Railway Vignette; Railway Models; Railway Scenics; Reisler; Reisler Animal Toys; Reisler Farm; Reisler Farm Toys; Reisler Farmers; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com;
The fencing got marbled production with the colour-mix differing from batch to batch. I also have a rather fine bull but I didn't do any comparison shots for the Airfix page, I'll try to do some in a day or two?

20mm Animals; 20mm Farm Toys; 20mm Figures; Danish Toy Figures; HO - OO; HO - OO Farm Models; HO - OO Figures; Made in Denmark; Model Railway Vignette; Railway Models; Railway Scenics; Reisler; Reisler Animal Toys; Reisler Farm; Reisler Farm Toys; Reisler Farmers; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com;
All Reisler on the right; you can appreciate from the left-hand shot how small those chickens are! That's it; Reisler's HO Collectors Series farm - box ticked.

HO is for Lone Star Germans

Just a box ticker to get something up here for this afternoon! The Lone Star Germans reduced somewhat!

25mm Lone Star; Afrika Korps; DAK; German Infantry; German Soldiers; HO - OO Figures; Land Rovers; Landy; Lone Star; Lone Star German Infantry; Lone Star HO; Lone Star Land Rover; Lone Star Nazis; N-Gauge Land Rovers; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Treble-O-Trains; War Games Figures;
This is the contents of a full set, almost certainly from the D-Day play-set with large vac-form, you get (got; 60+-years ago!) eight each of the six figure poses downscaled to an HO-gauge compatible 23-odd millimetre size along with two of the sub-scale (N-gauge) Land Rovers from the Treble-O-Trains range range, but in a dark olive, satin finish, rather than the bright, gloss red, black or British racing-green of the railway versions, giving a 50-piece count - 100 with the Paratrooper opo's; we'll look at another day.

The painting here has been restricted to a stab-and-hope dash of matt, flesh-pink in the vague areas of the face and hands - check-out the flame-thrower operators!

25mm Lone Star; Afrika Korps; DAK; German Infantry; German Soldiers; HO - OO Figures; Land Rovers; Landy; Lone Star; Lone Star German Infantry; Lone Star HO; Lone Star Land Rover; Lone Star Nazis; N-Gauge Land Rovers; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Treble-O-Trains; War Games Figures;
Later they seem to have done service as Chinese troops (probably referring to the Korean conflict) with an all-over gloss-red hat and while one might be tempted to imagine that this headgear embellishment was home painting; note that A) the flesh (better registered) is also now gloss and . . .

25mm Lone Star; Afrika Korps; DAK; German Infantry; German Soldiers; HO - OO Figures; Land Rovers; Landy; Lone Star; Lone Star German Infantry; Lone Star HO; Lone Star Land Rover; Lone Star Nazis; N-Gauge Land Rovers; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Treble-O-Trains; War Games Figures;
. . . B) another out-painter has gone with a more detailed attempt at the red-star, Chinese troops (and later the Vietcong) carried on their soft hats; both colours are also in a gloss-finish.

News, Views Etc . . . Bits and Bobs

I'll post something more substantial here later today, but a few things that might tempt you to surf the Wibbly Wobbly Way . . .

A week after his last announcement, Barney Brown has more news about his Herald Toys and Models site;

Dear Collector, this week we have launched an early Autumn Sale on many Britains, Herald and Farm related models, with BIG reductions on many items, so why not browse our comprehensive stock of plastics, click on our SPECIALS and "Get Them While They're Hot!" Happy Collecting as always, Barney.

Fascinating Blog Post over at Plaid Stallions the other day;

There's stuff all the way to the bottom boss!

Yesterday - less than a day after ITLAPD - I bought four Pirates in Basingrad! Today a large, unexpected box arrived from a military / film costumier in London (Thank you Peter Evans!) which my assistant pounced on, as is her wont!

It contained several lots of-, and some individual- Pirates! Which means that less than 48 hours after the event I already have three or four posts in the long-queue for next year! See you there in 361!

F is for Follow-up - Greco-Trojan Warriors

Following-up on the recent Trojan Warriors post Brian sent me a few images of his very 'clean' group and something a little more interesting, a Hinton Hunt metal Greek hoplite with the proper 'Bell' cuirass from 1972.

Here he is, he's in the queue for a re-paint and Brian reminisces;

I used to shop at the Hinton Hunt store on Camden Passage, late 60's early 70's. A wonderful eccentric place depending on whether the husband or wife was manning it.

From the stock I would say production over several days or a week was one range only. This meant that if you arrived just after new stock there would be a range of hundreds of one subject. I remember this one figure had dozens of variations of just the arms and weapons. I must have put this one aside when I ran out of metallic paint.

To which I would add that Rose Miniatures had some lovely Greeks too, around the same time, of which I have some small scale versions somewhere.

Posed with Brian's Britains; you can see he fits right in and scaled to within a gnats-crochet of his plastic brethren, although with a thinner base he's probably the equivalent of 55mm! It would appear that Herald's Trojan Warriors haven't taken kindly to his presence though?

Thanks Brian!

F is for Follow-up - Hawaiian Ukulele Player

When we looked at these the other day, we were looking at cake-decoration sub-piracies in a soft polyethylene for 'Rack Toy Month' who were from the 'Unknown Ethnic Dress Civilians' box . . . well, these - here today - were in the large scale ethnic dancers tub!

Britains Ethnic Dancers; Britains Herald; Copies; Ethnic Dancers; Hawaiian Musicians; Hawaiian Ukulele Player; Herald Ethnic Figurines; Hong Kong Novelty; Hong Kong Piracy; Hong Kong Plastic Toy; Knock Offs; Made in Hong Kong; Musicians; Piracies; Plastic Novelty; Plastic Toy Figures; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Ukulele Player;
I don't actually have a hula-girl yet; Britains or full-size copy, but I got two ukulele players (in the 'big purchase' I think?) and a Hong Kong hard polystyrene clone at one of those 2009-11 shows.

From the left are Britains-Herald's original with an eight-colour paint scheme, in the middle the later reduced-paint version still has six because of the complicated sculpt with flower-garland (Lei) and instrument, while the Hong Kong copy-guy also has eight, but nicely (when you consider how closely those HK Trojan warriors followed Britains) in a new colour-way.

F is for Follow-up - Speedwell Medics and Ambulance Crew

As a follow-up to the recent Mettoy (et al) medic's post, Chris Smith sent me these shots of his Speedwell, suggesting that mine were correct in their paint, as his are as near mint as you can get with 50-year-old-plus gloss paint on shiny polyethylene!

45mm Figures; Early British Toy Figures; Early British Toys; Polyethylene Toy Figures; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Speedwell; Speedwell Ambulance Crew; Speedwell Hospital Toys; Speedwell Medics; 1 Follow-up to Speedwell Medics Hospital Staff Patients Plastic Toy Figures
The doctor and patient with bed that I still have to track down! Interestingly, while the figures are among the most original of that group of British 'minor makes' we've looked at on the khaki Infantry page, the bed and the method of fixing the ends-on is very similar to the bed in the earlier, little boxed Mettoy Ward Ten set, which I also still have to track down.

I still think the lips of my nurse have been re-painted and possibly also the base, but the blue highlights now seem original, although the mouth here is not that different, so maybe they got orange on Monday morning and red the rest of the week, although why this nurse lent her lipstick to the doctor is - I suspect - a story for another day; the patient won't tell, he's clearly 'out of it'!

45mm Figures; Early British Toy Figures; Early British Toys; Polyethylene Toy Figures; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Speedwell; Speedwell Ambulance Crew; Speedwell Hospital Toys; Speedwell Medics; 2 Follow-up to Speedwell Medics Plastic Toy Figures Stretcher Team Crew 1
Another view with a better angle on the bed, along with Chris's Speedwell stretcher team, he sent more on the stretcher/s which will go to the Khaki Infantry page when I get round to it, but I've been busy with pirates, sorting a huge box form Jim, show purchases and the storage stuff!

I love how happy the doctor and nurse look with their clearly quite poorly patient! Cheers Chris; they're lovely!

Heads-Up!
The date for the next Plastic Warrior Show is confirmed as being Saturday 11th May 2019 at the usual venue.

Captain Pugwash
Apropo an email on the ITLAPD posts, someone mentioned Captain Pugwash and it struck me he might be the cartoon character in the unknown premiums, so I had a quick google, he wasn't but I found a useful myth-busting page;

Steam Railway Art

Issuing flyers, at the venue, on the day is not promotion! It's advertising 'in the moment', and at an isolated venue (nature of site, not geographic!) with everyone having to walk past the exhibition after paying their entry fee, you are only going to attract the odd extra trader/dealer to visit, while they are on their fag/coffee-break? And they were lovely works!

Promotion needs active effort in the weeks or months leading up to the event, if you want your even here in time, get emailing! Two people approached me last Saturday about their events, one gave me stuff to scan, the other is going to, they will get extra coverage as a result . . . for free!
