About Me

No Fixed Abode, Home Counties, United Kingdom
I’m a 60-year-old Aspergic gardening CAD-Monkey. Sardonic, cynical and with the political leanings of a social reformer, I’m also a toy and model figure collector, particularly interested in the history of plastics and plastic toys. Other interests are history, current affairs, modern art, and architecture, gardening and natural history. I love plain chocolate, fireworks and trees, but I don’t hug them, I do hug kittens. I hate ignorance, when it can be avoided, so I hate the 'educational' establishment and pity the millions they’ve failed with teaching-to-test and rote 'learning' and I hate the short-sighted stupidity of the entire ruling/industrial elite, with their planet destroying fascism and added “buy-one-get-one-free”. Likewise, I also have no time for fools and little time for the false crap we're all supposed to pretend we haven't noticed, or the games we're supposed to play. I will 'bite the hand that feeds', to remind it why it feeds.

WH is for Art Craft Products

This is one of those posts which by hook or by crook pretty-much write themselves.

I don't know much about flats, a rudimentary history and the technical stuff about pouring lead into slate moulds, or that sculptors and publishers (or 'Editors') are not necessarily the same people, is about the limit of my knowledge. I know I like them and I have a few, they come-in in mixed lots, or if I see some going cheap I grab them, while for everything else Garratt usually proves more reliable on flats than he does on plastics, if one wants to know more!

I also have a couple of the older German books along with the beautiful all-colour one which came out in the 1990's/early 2000's (glossy, dark green cover?), but they are all in a rather appalling stack in the corner of the garage and I haven't started sorting 'the library' out yet!

Art Craft Products; Berlinner Zinnfiguren; Civilian Flats; Civilian Toy Figures; Flat Figures; Flats; Flats - Civilian; Flats - Winter Scenes; Frank Flats; Hafer Flats; Ice Skating Party; Kroger Flats; Lecke Flats; Madlener Flats; Retter Flats; Ruediger Hafer; Segom Catalogue; SEGOM Flats; Skiing Party; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Werner Scholtz Katalogue; Winter Scenes; Wolfgang Hafer;
I have however - as you will have noticed - started scanning the cuttings from the box- and lever-arch files and trying to get the more interesting bits up here, to which end I scanned this in, meaning to simply post it 'as is', to wit; a curiosity, in the hope someone may have been able to help with the ID'ing of the figures.

Art Craft Products - a jobber in the early 1950's; working out of a warehouse (mail order) or a speciality-store advertising seasonal novelties in the press, something like that and the pictures look like you'd want a set - on the mantle for Christmas, arranged under the crimbo-tree or set-out on a wide window sill, or even on the cake?

Although it's not clear they aren't solids of some kind! And younger readers should be aware that the mid-eighties and gay-nineties to which the ad' refers are the 1880's and 1890's, closer (or 'as close') to the 1950's as/than we are!

Art Craft Products; Berlinner Zinnfiguren; Civilian Flats; Civilian Toy Figures; Flat Figures; Flats; Flats - Civilian; Flats - Winter Scenes; Frank Flats; Hafer Flats; Ice Skating Party; Kroger Flats; Lecke Flats; Madlener Flats; Retter Flats; Ruediger Hafer; Segom Catalogue; SEGOM Flats; Skiing Party; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Werner Scholtz Katalogue; Winter Scenes; Wolfgang Hafer;
I then realised a picture I'd only recently hoovered-off evilBay matched the sets, with a typical flat, block-in, factory-paint of the era, but still no ID as they were being sold unknown.

Then about two weeks ago another picture appeared on the same site, describing a Hafer as the name, I downloaded the image thinking it might be a typo for Hafner or a similar, more familiar name, but checked Garratt and the dongles to find two of them, both connected to the same German or 'Nuremberg Flats' outfit!

Art Craft Products; Berlinner Zinnfiguren; Civilian Flats; Civilian Toy Figures; Flat Figures; Flats; Flats - Civilian; Flats - Winter Scenes; Frank Flats; Hafer Flats; Ice Skating Party; Kroger Flats; Lecke Flats; Madlener Flats; Retter Flats; Ruediger Hafer; Segom Catalogue; SEGOM Flats; Skiing Party; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Werner Scholtz Katalogue; Winter Scenes; Wolfgang Hafer;
I intended to crop the image and do the same thing as with the previous, but it was a nicer, high-res image, so thought to ask the seller if I could use it as a stand-alone image - I went back to see if it was still for sale, only to find he had several useful things in his shop, so I ended-up buying three of them!

Like the old painted ones (which will probably be from Art Craft or a similar seller and contemporary or near-contemporary with the advert) this sculpting is clearly visible in both sets, but is - here - a modern or recent casting for someone with greater painting skills than me to work their magic on.

Art Craft Products; Berlinner Zinnfiguren; Civilian Flats; Civilian Toy Figures; Flat Figures; Flats; Flats - Civilian; Flats - Winter Scenes; Frank Flats; Hafer Flats; Ice Skating Party; Kroger Flats; Lecke Flats; Madlener Flats; Retter Flats; Ruediger Hafer; Segom Catalogue; SEGOM Flats; Skiing Party; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Werner Scholtz Katalogue; Winter Scenes; Wolfgang Hafer;
Lots more shots as we may never visit it again! Going on Garratt, but from his Model Soldier Collecting, not the Encyclopaedia, we can see that the WH is for Wolfgang Hafer the editor. LM  and HL are probably for the engravers Madlener and Lecke - maybe one specialised in horses, the other the sleigh/people, or one blocked-in the other, the finer work?

While the RH may have been added in the last few decades (1979 by the looks of it?), being Ruediger Hafer; Wolfgang's son, they both operating near Kassel, a place I have often cruised-past on the way to somewhere else - a beautiful part of the world though! The Wv, is for Winter Scenes (item 19) . . . in German . . . Winterver-something!

Art Craft Products; Berlinner Zinnfiguren; Civilian Flats; Civilian Toy Figures; Flat Figures; Flats; Flats - Civilian; Flats - Winter Scenes; Frank Flats; Hafer Flats; Ice Skating Party; Kroger Flats; Lecke Flats; Madlener Flats; Retter Flats; Ruediger Hafer; Segom Catalogue; SEGOM Flats; Skiing Party; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Werner Scholtz Katalogue; Winter Scenes; Wolfgang Hafer;
How they come in! I also added to the library (greatly increasing the flats section) with the Berlinner Zinnfiguren catalogue and all but completed the SEGOM archive with their flats catalogue, having already got the solids/plastic catalogue and the small scale plastic catalogue to which the late page (with the additional British poses) was added by a contributor back at the beginning of the Blog; ten-odd years ago!

See, by happenstance; the post as good as wrote itself, and I get to add Art Craft and Hafer to the tag list . . . bargain! And . . . from the base shape/markings, I think I'll be able to ID some of my unknown flats, so we may well return to Hafer (or SEGOM) next year.

Y is for You Wait Ages for One, Then Two Come-along Together!

No; not missives from the PSTSM, although it's funny, he whines I should leave him alone back in April and then spends the summer popping like a seed-pod! And I'm happy I'm so 'not a worry' to him, he only needed the two posts in a row; I'm not under their skin like a tropical bugs-egg's, at all, am I? Hee-hee! And the monkey-lizard is getting quite hysterical . . . not funny - just excited!

No, this is further to the follow-up the other day, this turned-up after I'd posted the article and vacated the Wibbly Wobbly Way for the weekend!

Cocktail Glass Ornaments; Hong Kong Mermaids; Made in China; Made in Hong Kong; Mermaids; Novelty Mermaid Toys; Novelty Toy Mermaids; Plastic Toy Donkey; Plastic Toy Giraffe; Polystyrene Figure; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; The Winner Industrial (International) Co. Ltd.; W; Winner;
The Winner Industrial (International) Company Limited, a bit of a mouthful, still, we'll probably never return to them, but just in case we do, and for the purposes of tagging; 'Winner' will do!

Despite the 'Industrial' in the title they may be just another jobbing wholesaler/shipping agent type, they're probably the same mouldings as those A1 Co., figures we saw on Saturday, certainly the same seven poses, and probably the same glassy transparent polystyrene of my 30-odd year-old example, and a naff novelty I've probably ripped the arse out of by now, but I had nothing-else for today - just lazyness . . . and sorting stuff!

Or are they the quiet-in-the-background manufacturer supplying both the 1980's German importer and 2006's A1 Company? We'll probably never know! A lot of this ephemeral plastic-tat's going to be banned in the near future anyway; if Trump doesn't kill us all first!

Yea! We've been given twelve-years to save the planet - let's have an arms race!

And . . .

You can have a whole bloody family!

News, Views Etc . . . Saturday's Post

 Text-colour 'typo' sorted from Saturday, it happens occasionally, it's when you copy something from hot-mail into word, it retains a hidden layer of coding or something, hey-ho!

 _+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_

It's a bit early but it's only ten weeks away! Suddenly my couple or three is looking inadequate, I love the misserable looking confenderate general! And Star Wars? Too cool for nut-cracking school!

R is for Return to Roman Raiders

Another follow-up; they were a box-ticker last time, so this will try to be briefer! I brought my few Cherilea 60mm Romans together from the storage lot with that larger bunch I 'scored' on evilbay a while back, and took a few shots of the result.

One For The Family Album, British; Cherilea 60mm Romans; Cherilea 60mm Soldiers; Cherilea Plastic Soldiers; Cherilea Toy Soldiers; Old Toy Soldiers; Plastic Figurines; Plastic Toy Soldiers; Polyethylene Toy Soldiers; Roman Auxiliaries; Roman Soldiers; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Toy Figurines; Toy Soldiers; Vintage Plastic Figures;
One for the family album!

Rome on tour circa 200AD! I've still only got one good standing ready chap (a couple of damaged ones I didn't include), but that's OK as he makes a good boss-type! And the blue standard bearer might find himself in the conversion pile one day if I ever get round to modelling again.

Base Types, British; Cherilea 60mm Romans; Cherilea 60mm Soldiers; Cherilea Plastic Soldiers; Cherilea Toy Soldiers; Old Toy Soldiers; Plastic Figurines; Plastic Toy Soldiers; Polyethylene Toy Soldiers; Roman Auxiliaries; Roman Soldiers; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Toy Figurines; Toy Soldiers; Vintage Plastic Figures;
Base Types

I don't think there's any change from last time and they weren’t easy to shoot so I've stopped it down, but none of the Cherilea 'wax seal' type marks you see on the WWII or Roundheads have turned-up . . . yet?

From The Rear, British; Cherilea 60mm Romans; Cherilea 60mm Soldiers; Cherilea Plastic Soldiers; Cherilea Toy Soldiers; Old Toy Soldiers; Plastic Figurines; Plastic Toy Soldiers; Polyethylene Toy Soldiers; Roman Auxiliaries; Roman Soldiers; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Toy Figurines; Toy Soldiers; Vintage Plastic Figures;
From the Rear

They aren't bad really, but you can't make a decent line or maniple from them so 'skirmishing' rather than 'following the numbers', especially with the axes to the fore!

Bit before my time, but back in the day these must have looked wonderful to small boys - all laid-out or lined-up, on a glass shelf, with fresh paint?

F is for Follow-up - Several Recent Posts

Feedback and files! Feedback from followers of the Blog, and stuff from the archive files have added a bit more to some of the items featured in recent posts, so a bitty post today, but hopefully interesting, especially if you like the shite from the bottom of the quality/value heap.

2010W; 8000A; Alien Novelties; Alien Novelty Toy; Area 51; Bug-Eyed Aliens; Capsule Toys; Green Aliens; Gum Ball Capsule Toys; Made in China; Made in Hong Kong; Martians; Novelty Alien Figurines; Party Favours; Plastic & Metal Manufactory; Plastic Aliens; Plastic Toy Aliens; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Toy Aliens; Unknown Plastic Aliens; Unknown Space Aliens; Unknown Space Toy; Unknown Toy Figures; Yick Fung;
The bug-eyed aliens have a brand! Yick Fung (Metal & Plastic Manufacturing Company), from the New Territories; I doubt it's the manufacturer, but rather a wholesaler, and they were carrying them in 2006 which is about the time I got the footballers with the little bases, my version of these though, have a lot less paint (eyes and mouths only) and were party favours a couple of not-so-many-years ago.

I want cat pencil tops! Dinorasers, train-whistles, mini-animals including the Britains gorilla pose; is that v.28·5? All good stuff!

A1 Company; Capsule Toy Mermaid; Cocktail Glass Ornaments; Hong Kong Mermaids; Made in China; Made in Hong Kong; Mermaids; Novelty Mermaid Toys; Novelty Toy Mermaids; Plastic Mermaids; Polyethylene Toy Figures; Polypropylene Toys; Polystyrene Figure; Poured Resin Castings; Resin Figurines; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; The Works;
Meanwhile at the same time the A1 Company of Shatin, Hong Kong was pushing my old Berlin-acquired cocktail-glass mermaid or a copy of it, 20 years later! I actually remember the monkey and the donkey from the same time (1986/7) and possibly the elephant but the other three are new to me and/or my memories.

The whole set has shades of the animals passed-off as Nosco in the USA from the 1950/60's and also used in Europe as premiums, but simplified over time and from constant copying! Again, wholesale rather than manufacture I think, the name points to someone trying to get first-place on the trade-fair lists!

Note they also carry the Brüder knock-off construction vehicles and racing cars, and I know at least two other wholesalers who do.

310982; 311322; Adventskalender; Bitterundzart; Cowboy Flats; Cowboys and Indians; Flat Cowboys and Indians; Flat Figures; Flats; Frucht Lolly; German Flats; German Toy Figurines; Indian Flats; Kuefa Kola Rundlutscher; Kuefa Kreisel Rund Lutscher; Kuefa Rundlutscher Frucht; Marke+Kuefa; Polystyrene Figures; Polystyrene Toys; Rakuten; Rund Lutscher; Rundlutscher; Rundlutscher Stiele; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Spitztüte; Unknown Flats; Unknown Plastic Figures; Unknown Toy Figures; Unknown Wild West; Wild West; Wild West Flats; Wundertüten;
Michael Hüttmann from Germany came-up trumps with the 'wundertüten' Wild West, by discounting the possibility of them actually being wundertüten at all! They are in fact Rundlutscher (the things above) sticks or 'handles' and in Michael's own words;

"Rundlutscher (round lollipop) is one of those wonderful . . . German technical terms that you'd probably not bring in relation with a fancy piece of candy . . . [while] . . .  Wundertüte is a concept here, you go to a Kiosk, there they have a choice of such plastic tons full of different sweets, there is a plethora available here, everybody has a different portfolio on offer. These things were among the first ever to be available, they used to be classics but today kids go for different sweets, from the same little tons. You tell the guy in charge that you want 2 of these, 3 of these, 6 of those, you get the idea, he packs it in a small white paper Spitztüte (pointed bag), a wee thing shaped like a KKK hood but serving a much better purpose, and that is called a Wundertüte (bag o' miracles or wonders)."

The 'KKK hood' sounds like a smaller version of the chip-cone which has replaced newspaper in 'Fish & Chip' shops here in the UK.

Michael also pointed me in the right direction for finding them on the Wibbly Wobbly Way, which I did to obtain the above (and below) images which are all commercial sales images, if you fancy a tub, they are available in 20's or 100's except the site selling them in threes (!) and can be located here;

310982; 311322; Adventskalender; Bitterundzart; Cowboy Flats; Cowboys and Indians; Flat Cowboys and Indians; Flat Figures; Flats; Frucht Lolly; German Flats; German Toy Figurines; Indian Flats; Kuefa Kola Rundlutscher; Kuefa Kreisel Rund Lutscher; Kuefa Rundlutscher Frucht; Marke+Kuefa; Polystyrene Figures; Polystyrene Toys; Rakuten; Rund Lutscher; Rundlutscher; Rundlutscher Stiele; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Spitztüte; Unknown Flats; Unknown Plastic Figures; Unknown Toy Figures; Unknown Wild West; Wild West; Wild West Flats; Wundertüten;
The kola ones look just like little edible-turds . . . which is apt; as Michael and I were chatting about some of the shit I post here, although you know I prefer shite, rhymes with kite and is kinder on the ear! From the images found, we have;

Aeroplane
Bear
Cowboy Standing
Goose-girl with Geese
Gnome Miner
Hansel & Gretel and the Witch
Hunter Jumping Fence
Indian on Horseback
Princess & Fawn
Racing Car
Skier
Weightlifter

There seem also to be two variants; smoother, flatter 'cut-outs' (kola tub) and more heavily-etched sculptural ones (fruit flavour tub), which may be an aging 'over-time' thing, a second tool or outright piracy by a second manufacturer, and there's no clue as to which is the newer, I'd favour the flat, smooth ones as the/any 'replacements'?

How many other sculpts there are out there I don't know, but these seem pretty constant between one (or two?) apparent manufacturer/s (the main originator seems to be Kuefa brand) and at least four sellers and - with the earliest image dating from 2013 - clearly have been the same line-up for some time.

Presumably at the height of their popularity (1960/70's?) there would have been wider ranges of prize sticks/handles, with subjects/themes turning-over more frequently? So that's Rundlutscher sticks not Wundertüten! Cheers Tschau mit au Michael!

British Flats; Cowboy Flats; Cowboys and Indians; Flat Cowboys and Indians; Flat Figures; Flats; Indian Flats; Lucky Bags; Lucky Dip; Margarine Flats; Margarine Premiums; Mr. Lucky Bag; Polystyrene Figures; Polystyrene Toys; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; The Lucky Bags; Unknown Flats; Unknown Plastic Figures; Unknown Toy Figures; Unknown Wild West; Wild West; Wild West Flats; Wundertüten;
Meanwhile Brain Berke had remembered something of the Cowboys and Indians in the earlier post, and again, in his own words;

". . . the Indians are identical to the ones that used to be in "Lucky Bags".

In the 50's paper sealed Lucky Bags contained a toy, two sweets, usually a chew and one boiled, a printed slip of paper with a joke. I think the price was 1d.

I never collected the figures as they were rare in North London but I do remember collecting a train, one coach or box car at a time [they were ] 1" long hard plastic train cars. The loco and cars were obviously American in origin.
"

Thanks as always to Brian too, and I wonder if the rolling-stock were the Lido sculpts?

I actually thought I saw some Mr. Lucky bags the other day, but I didn't grab one, and can't remember where I saw them, if I see them again I'll get a couple and see what they are offering these days, otherwise; I haven't seen them since the mid-1990's.

A longer think (it was only two or three weeks ago) while this post moseys through edit and imaging leads me to think they may have been pink & purple/Disney type themed ones - if you know what I mean - which is why I left them; fairy-tale princess stickers and an elastic hair-band is rather where I draw the line!

310982; 311322; Adventskalender; Bitterundzart; Cowboy Flats; Cowboys and Indians; Flat Cowboys and Indians; Flat Figures; Flats; Frucht Lolly; German Flats; German Toy Figurines; Indian Flats; Kuefa Kola Rundlutscher; Kuefa Kreisel Rund Lutscher; Kuefa Rundlutscher Frucht; Marke+Kuefa; Polystyrene Figures; Polystyrene Toys; Rakuten; Rund Lutscher; Rundlutscher; Rundlutscher Stiele; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Spitztüte; Unknown Flats; Unknown Plastic Figures; Unknown Toy Figures; Unknown Wild West; Wild West; Wild West Flats; Wundertüten;
Hilfe! Mine banane ist infestung mit Gunslingeren!

I couldn't resist it and succumbed to my inner-child Michael! Channelling a certain jolly, fat lady from the 1940's and massacring someone else's language at the same time, and why not; I massacre my own all the time!

Rundlutscher, Spitztüte and Wundertüten will be added to the Foreign Terms page, a veil will be drawn over Infestung and Gunslingerung! On the wider subject of languages, -tüte may be where 'tote'-bag comes from?

20 is for Most Questionable Things in AMERICA'n Store Ever?

You be the decide and x all else!

https://www.thetravel.com/20-questionable-things-found-in-target-around-the-us-and-4-we-can-never-find/

Actually I can only conclude that The Travel is even easier to ire that the Daily Wail, but then I think - like this post - The Travel are being tongue in cheek while The Pail was being serious, and I'd give house-room to the octopus!

This public service announcement was brought to you in association with TJF and the PSTSM, that's a Donald-fact . . . I say so! They may deny it, but the beauty of Donald-fact's is that they don't have to be facts at all.

Horse face? If she's a horse-face he must have been kicked in the face by a horse? Ugly, cretinous, orange monkey! Yes . . . I just called your President a monkey, an orange, cretinous one, but don't worry; we've got a dancing capuchin for Prime Minister - we're all trapped together in this mindless, end-of-the-human-race clusterfuck!

He can't even spell Daniels FFS!

Or . . . is it a biggly-biggly very-presidential play-on-words? Denials? Geddit! It's not good, but we like a play-on-words here at Small Scale World, like Donald Trumps [in his pants again], geddit . . . no it's more pretty childish-stuff from the fuckwitted, meat-faced, misogynist loon - if it was meant!

He's the 'total con', thick as pig-shit, now that's a Hugh fact!

News, Views Etc . . . Barney's Site and Maths Shite

Latest update from Barney Brown's Herald site was announcing Swoppet mounted had come in, but it was a few days ago, still; worth a visit as there was other stuff come-in;

Also, and specific to this morning's post here, Barney has one of the Kleeware stage coaches;

Buyer's keepers, loser's weepers!

===================

Meawhile and ONLY for those of you who enjoy mathematics (crazy nut-jobs!), here's a maths problem for you, it's all about Toy Soldiers, and no - I don't care! I've got Asperger's - I can't add a shopping-list up to the same total two times in ten tries, as far as maths is concerned I'm a retard!

===================

We should have a picture . . .

How they come in; . . . a quid-fifty's worth the other day, charity shops, a somebody-cat Thundercat, a Wickie the Wiking! And an interesting, seemingly pretty current, copy of the Elastolin farmer, but from China, in hard polystyrene. I know, bloody action-figure, how did I end up with an action figure? Because it's Thundercats and quite small, is how . . . and 50p; it was dirt cheap!

Vicky looks like she's killed an Imperial Dalek; a baby one, and is wearing its skirt . . . as a skirt! Or, at least I think it must be an updated, feisty, teenage, 'chicky-babe' Vicky, as the Heimo originals were a much younger 'cutesy' sculpt? She may also be Phidal?

Google (upon posting) says 'No!', not Wicky, nor Vicky (or even Ficky, but that's rude!) does anyone know who she is? Soft PVC?
