About Me

My photo
No Fixed Abode, Home Counties, United Kingdom
I’m a 60-year-old Aspergic gardening CAD-Monkey. Sardonic, cynical and with the political leanings of a social reformer, I’m also a toy and model figure collector, particularly interested in the history of plastics and plastic toys. Other interests are history, current affairs, modern art, and architecture, gardening and natural history. I love plain chocolate, fireworks and trees, but I don’t hug them, I do hug kittens. I hate ignorance, when it can be avoided, so I hate the 'educational' establishment and pity the millions they’ve failed with teaching-to-test and rote 'learning' and I hate the short-sighted stupidity of the entire ruling/industrial elite, with their planet destroying fascism and added “buy-one-get-one-free”. Likewise, I also have no time for fools and little time for the false crap we're all supposed to pretend we haven't noticed, or the games we're supposed to play. I will 'bite the hand that feeds', to remind it why it feeds.

News, Views Etc . . . Forthcoming Events Saturday 3rd - Friday 9th August 2019

So Boris the Clown got off to a good start by going to Scotland to 'save it' for the Union and being told where to get off by just about everyone he met, he then went to Ireland sorry; Ulster where he tried to convince the Nationalists, Liberals and Unaligned/Independents that he was totally neutral, the day after having dinner with three senior members of the Tory-propping DUP! He then went to Eire, where he was told where to get off by just about everyone he met! Go Boris - Churchillian saviour of humanity! Not really saving the pound though, is he?

Still, as least he probably knows we didn't have an RAF in 1776 . . . that Trump huh? What a card!

Anyone looking for toys of Washington's airborne glory will need a Toy Fair and sadly they are in short supply this week, but there's a four-day Vectis sale to make-up!

Minor Stuff

Some sites mention aToy & Train fair in Morley/Leeds on Sunday, organised by Dualco, but as far as I can tell it's a proper vintage/antiques fair and unlikely to have more than the odd piece of overpriced hollow-cast or tin-plate novelties? Morley Leisure Centre, Queensway, Leeds, LS27 9JP

It's Beaulieu Supercar Weekend 3rd/4th, down there on the edge of the New Forrest, if this is anything like the big auto-jumble meet I went to about fifteen years ago, it's great for plastic vehicles (and die-casts etc.) up on the hill between the venue-proper and the car park. I filled-my boots with cheap, esoteric tat over the week - on that occasion! I suspect this is a more prestige event - www.beaulieu.co.uk

And there a children's bookswap in Newcastle for those of you with more bookish offspring, up that way - the National Centre for Children's books, Line Street, Ouseburn Valley, Newcastle-upon-Tyne - www.sevenstories.org.uk

There's supposed to be a Hotwheels show in Chicago (USA), but I can't find anything on it* so while it may well be a Mattel toy-related convention, it may equally be downtown gang-bangers playing with souped-up 1970's sedans to loud music and the smell of melted-rubber, while oiled, tattooed-babe's in hot-pants, hang-out (in all senses of the word), either way; sounds like fun!

* This is not an insult of all Mattel Hotwheel sites, just an aside! That Standinger, he's as daft as a brush up a badgers arse, how is my not finding something an 'insult' to anybody? Stoopid man!

Hestair Kiddycraft Brick-News

Art
Tate Modern in London has an interactive art 'installation' in the main turbine hall at the moment consisting of a ton** of white Lego, with which little fingers (or bigger ones) can make what they like, the aim is to construct elements of one's ideal 'future City' but expect to see various attempts at space-ships and genitalia (or genitalia-shaped space-ships!) left in the pile, still, I suppose that by limiting it to one colour they have greatly reduced the chances of rude words also being left!

** It's not clear if it's a literal ton or a figurative one?

From the Evening Standard (28th June) by 'Adams' and summing the situation up a month-ago nicely I think! Lego had just been voted most annoying toy to step on . . . toy soldiers came-in at number 7 I think? Number 5?

Entertainment
Lego have bought-up Merlin Entertainment, clearly realising that the writing is on the wall for their ocean-filling polymer-product, it looks like they might be planning to get out of toys and into theme parks?

The purchase brings them Madame Tussauds, the London Eye, Thorp Park, Chessington World of Adventure and Sealife . . . among other well-known and successful attractions. With the Legoland theme parks the new group (Kirkby) will be the world's second largest high-end, low-brow, event-destination, tourist-trap operator after Disney.

Not so Entertaining?
Yet today's paper has Merlin reporting a drop in sales at Legoland after the last Lego movie failed to deliver, or drive enough customers to the site . . . you win some, you lose some!

Have we had this one before? Another example of the kit-runner trope, illustrating an article on 3D-printing in medicine I cut-out, but rather spoiled by the components being 'painted' on the trees! And why would you be made to glue every bone of the hand together if the spine comes in long-section mouldings - and a different scale!

Argos took it's toys to 'PRIDE' the other week!

My question is - why the f**k has the potato-head family been given a plastic potato? Surely the whole point . . . the whole fun; is in finding an odd-shaped root-vegetable to make a funny face, with four-eyes and multiple hands. Or, ruining a banana or courgette, an apple or a water-melon for a Mr Bloody-fat Head? Mr Lemon, Mrs Orange?

The plastic heads have set holes and therefore set positioning and a limited number of configurations, once you've tried all the obvious ones and placed the ears where the hands should be and vise-a-versa, there's nothing left but to get bored? Never mind PRIDE . . .

"Down with plastic potatoes! Freedom for funny fruit! Vary the vegetables!"

Other News

Hassenfeld Brothers
Hasbro have posted strong second-quarter results which they have credited on sales of Marvel Avengers and Magic The Gathering licensed merchandise. I though MtG had died a death, I still have an un-played-with set of the original two-pack card set somewhere!

Revenues are up 9% on last year, by they are warning that if the Trumpton puts tariffs on Chinese imports; prices will have to rise, that's from their no-shit-Sherlock department - which Trump clearly hasn't spoken to!

H is For How They Come In

Busy week this week; I'd already found two lots by the time I posted last week's News, Views Etc..., since when three more purchases have been made, all of them charity-shop buys.

£4; © 1992 I; 03rd - 10nd August; 03rd - 9th August; 1-32nd MG34; 44 Toy Soldiers; 99p Stores; Adams Cartoon; Aliens; Ankylosaurus; Announcements; Anti-Semitism; Argos Pride; B&Q; Board Games; Charlotte Comicon; Chinasaur; Combat Game; Concord Convention Center; Deluxe Set; Dinosaur; Disney; Economist Magazine; Ego's; Embassy Suites; Evening Standard; Four Pounds; Friday 28th June 2019; Gay; German Africa Corps; kerthunkersaurus; Kit Frame; Kit Runner Trope; Lego News; Legot; Lesbian; LGBTQ2; Light & Sound; Machinegun Team; Meat Eating Plants; Meme; Operation Aliens; Peter Pan Playthings; PMS; Pollution; Pride Toys; Pull back Motor; Pz.Kpfw.IV; Revell Afrika Korps; Revell Set; Revell Toy Soldiers; Ripley; Runner; Show Dates; Show Times; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Soldiers; Sprue Trope; Summer Show; Toxic Air; Toy Fairs; Toy Model Figures; Toy Pride; Toy Shows; Toy Soldiers; Toys In The Media; Transport For London; Tree; U.K.R.D. No. 2022253; Vectis Auctions, Venus Fly Trap; Wizz Toys;
A simple rack-toy, probably seen (and ignored) a few years ago in the now-defunct Poundworld or 99p Stores (PMS? I think that was 99p Stores?) and probably originally for offer at the same money! But now the deal is - I save two each of the figures and the hanger-card/labels for the archive and send the rest to recycling.

As mentioned it's a PMS import, the Wizz Toys being a short-lived phantom-brand, new to me and probably only used for a season, to graphically tie various disparate toy lines into a 'corporate' range.

Minutes before the rack-toy bag, I'd shelled-out the grand total of 50-pence for this 'light & sound' Panzer IV, around 1:50/60th and getting the lines of a late spaced-armour vehicle (Ausfklarung M/N?) quite well for a cheap toy.

I needed to remove the silly, out-of-scale M1 helmet from the turret because A) it looked bloody silly and B) kept setting-off the tinny machine-gun noise (which seems to be the same as that used on Lego Space-ship bodies and Tiger Electronics Star Wars toys back in the 1990's). A few screws later and a small hole left in the turret and the job was done. I removed the batteries while I was at it.

Posed with those figures we've seen several times now (and ID'd now I think - but I can't remember where/when!), which happened to arrive in a lot from Chris Smith the same day and to be roughly the correct scale - about 28/30mm.

A day or two later (Monday?) I picked up this rather fine kerthunkersaurus for pennies, it's marked China - 1992, which is pre-handover (1997) so an early example of the marking and it's as good as any Euro-saur (Schleich or Papo) and sized to match their output (quite 1:32nd compatible), lacking a bit in the decoration-department maybe?

As an aside, all five photographs were taken with the same settings against the same book-cover, the camera may never lie, but it struggles with the truth too! The middle-right shot is probably the colour-truest, with two washed-out and two over-warmified.

This came in yesterday, but will get its own post, I didn't even know it existed, nor that Peter Pan lasted 'till the 1990's, needless to say - it has figures, nine of 'em, including a Ripley, but with long hair! Did she have long hair in 'II'?

Finally; this bag turned-up in the same Farnborough charity shop as the bag of Germans the other week; £3.49p, I don't think they belong in a CTS bag? Six complete Revell DAK machine-gun crews; with tripod, MG34 in an SF-cradle with long-range sight, gunner, Nº 2 and base, times-six for less than four-quid beats those current Russian figures' pricing into a cocked hat . . . bargain! One of the guns was a different colour though!

I've just picked-up two 50p vehicles - pictures next week!

Why was I in Farnborough? Because B&Q are selling Venus Fly Traps for £4. And not the tiny little disappointing ones I saw at Kew Gardens (or Wisely?) a few years ago, but proper ones with clampy-pads bigger than a tuppence! I figured it was just what was needed for these tiny little black fruit-fly things which are becoming such a problem (they've made it onto Radio4, so it must be serious!), especially in the winter - global climate-change problems require global bio-solutions - It's already eaten . . . "Feed-Muh' Mama!"

S is for Sentry-Box Ticking!

Not the greatest sample I'm sure, compared to some of your collections, but I've only been fagged with this large-scale malarkey for ten years, and larger items - like 'large-ticket items' - tend to be a lower priority! But, and as with totem-poles, I do grab them if they're going cheap, others have come-in in mixed lots, while a core of British designs were in the big purchase.

Airfix Guards; Airfix Sentry Box; Athena; Britains Herald; Britains Sentry Box; British Sentry Boxes; Cavendish; Cavendish Sentry Box; Crescent; Guard Boxes; Guards Colour Party; Herald Hong Kong; Herald Sentry Box; Hong Kong; Kentoy Guard House; Kentoys; Made in Hong Kong; Mastermodel; Old Plastic Toys; Plastic Sentry Box; Reisler; Scenic Accessories; Sentry Boxes; Sentry Coop; Sentry House; Sentry Shed; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Speedwell; Timpo Sentry Box; Timpo Toys; Una - VP; Una Sentry Box; Unknown Sentry Boxes; Vintage Plastic Toys; Wardie Mastermodel; Wardie Sentry Box; Wooden Sentry Boxes;
The two main British makers have both had a stab, Timpo (right) went with one tool, manufacturing in two colours and then gluing opposite-colour pieces to each other for a choice of two, otherwise identical boxes!

Britains (left) had three, the Herald one in the middle we'll return to in a second, there was a larger one in the later years (which is a near-copy of their (or T&B's (?)) earlier hollow/slush-cast one I think?) and the semi-flat or relief 'stage scenery' one from late Herald [Hong Kong]'s windowed, long-box sets.

Airfix Guards; Airfix Sentry Box; Athena; Britains Herald; Britains Sentry Box; British Sentry Boxes; Cavendish; Cavendish Sentry Box; Crescent; Guard Boxes; Guards Colour Party; Herald Hong Kong; Herald Sentry Box; Hong Kong; Kentoy Guard House; Kentoys; Made in Hong Kong; Mastermodel; Old Plastic Toys; Plastic Sentry Box; Reisler; Scenic Accessories; Sentry Boxes; Sentry Coop; Sentry House; Sentry Shed; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Speedwell; Timpo Sentry Box; Timpo Toys; Una - VP; Una Sentry Box; Unknown Sentry Boxes; Vintage Plastic Toys; Wardie Mastermodel; Wardie Sentry Box; Wooden Sentry Boxes;
Returning to the earlier Herald version; it gave rise to a family of near-identical, but different boxes, with here from the left; Herald, Kentoy, Cavendish, and two unknown's either of which may (or may not) be Trojan, UNA or VP, or even Speedwell . . . or someone else entirely?

Airfix Guards; Airfix Sentry Box; Athena; Britains Herald; Britains Sentry Box; British Sentry Boxes; Cavendish; Cavendish Sentry Box; Crescent; Guard Boxes; Guards Colour Party; Herald Hong Kong; Herald Sentry Box; Hong Kong; Kentoy Guard House; Kentoys; Made in Hong Kong; Mastermodel; Old Plastic Toys; Plastic Sentry Box; Reisler; Scenic Accessories; Sentry Boxes; Sentry Coop; Sentry House; Sentry Shed; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Speedwell; Timpo Sentry Box; Timpo Toys; Una - VP; Una Sentry Box; Unknown Sentry Boxes; Vintage Plastic Toys; Wardie Mastermodel; Wardie Sentry Box; Wooden Sentry Boxes;
Rather than try to explain all the differences, it's easier to present them as a table for those whose levels of geekiness equal mine to pore-over and compare with the above images!

Airfix Guards; Airfix Sentry Box; Athena; Britains Herald; Britains Sentry Box; British Sentry Boxes; Cavendish; Cavendish Sentry Box; Crescent; Guard Boxes; Guards Colour Party; Herald Hong Kong; Herald Sentry Box; Hong Kong; Kentoy Guard House; Kentoys; Made in Hong Kong; Mastermodel; Old Plastic Toys; Plastic Sentry Box; Reisler; Scenic Accessories; Sentry Boxes; Sentry Coop; Sentry House; Sentry Shed; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Speedwell; Timpo Sentry Box; Timpo Toys; Una - VP; Una Sentry Box; Unknown Sentry Boxes; Vintage Plastic Toys; Wardie Mastermodel; Wardie Sentry Box; Wooden Sentry Boxes;
I will waffle over the marks though! (1) is obviously the Herald design, (2) is the Kentoys version, which - frankly - is the [slightly] better design, it's a tad 'cleaner', more symmetrical and better etched than the Herald version. (3) is the Cavendish version, it's clearly had an attempt at removing the 'KENTOY' first line, although it remains readable if you do that 'turning-it in the light' thing!

I think (4) is the one credited to UNA in the Plastic Warrior 'special' of 2009, it's also seen in grey (as a copy) in the Kentoys special of the same year; it has a heavier gable/roof edge? Trojan don't have one listed (so far!), neither do VP (yet), but then there is (5) waiting for an ascribing too!

Also; given the similarities between the Herald and Kentoy ones, might Gemodels' Musgrave be in there somewhere, I had presumed Norman Tooth for both similar designs? Although there's no larger ex-Herald one in the new Speedwell 'special' (post due . . . overdue!), one has to consider them for the unknown '5' above along with the other possible 'names'?

Airfix Guards; Airfix Sentry Box; Athena; Britains Herald; Britains Sentry Box; British Sentry Boxes; Cavendish; Cavendish Sentry Box; Crescent; Guard Boxes; Guards Colour Party; Herald Hong Kong; Herald Sentry Box; Hong Kong; Kentoy Guard House; Kentoys; Made in Hong Kong; Mastermodel; Old Plastic Toys; Plastic Sentry Box; Reisler; Scenic Accessories; Sentry Boxes; Sentry Coop; Sentry House; Sentry Shed; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Speedwell; Timpo Sentry Box; Timpo Toys; Una - VP; Una Sentry Box; Unknown Sentry Boxes; Vintage Plastic Toys; Wardie Mastermodel; Wardie Sentry Box; Wooden Sentry Boxes;
I seem to have crammed the rest into one collage, but that's how the cookie crumbled, so that's how it is and what we have to work with!

Image A has the 'foreigners', with Афина (Athena) from Greece at 1, and Reisler's equally common Danish box at 2, both have been sold as tourist keepsakes for decades and are just as common as Britains' examples. 3 is from Hong Kong and must be from larger playsets? The Riesler has an incorrect flag, actually taken from a Guards musician!

Image B shows - on the right (2) what I'm pretty sure is Crescent's wooden one which ran alongside their figures through both the hollow-cast and plastic years, but I have a half-an-inkling the heavy steel 'tin-plate' one is Crescent too? But I stand to be corrected by someone who does know! Chris Smith is to be thanked for sending the wooden one to the Blog the other day.

Image C is not that clear, I used to think they were die-cast (and probably Wardie/Mastermodels; they're quite small?), but they may be a hardish whitemetal ('lead') slush-cast, which would open the field of possible makers considerably?

Image D has the diminutive Speedwell box on the right and an unknown wooden giant (also from Chris Smith - thanks again Chris) on the left, the chevron stripes are a bit 'Euro' looking and I suspect a reasonably modern, probably infant's wooden castle or building-blocks type set?

Airfix Guards; Airfix Sentry Box; Athena; Britains Herald; Britains Sentry Box; British Sentry Boxes; Cavendish; Cavendish Sentry Box; Crescent; Guard Boxes; Guards Colour Party; Herald Hong Kong; Herald Sentry Box; Hong Kong; Kentoy Guard House; Kentoys; Made in Hong Kong; Mastermodel; Old Plastic Toys; Plastic Sentry Box; Reisler; Scenic Accessories; Sentry Boxes; Sentry Coop; Sentry House; Sentry Shed; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Speedwell; Timpo Sentry Box; Timpo Toys; Una - VP; Una Sentry Box; Unknown Sentry Boxes; Vintage Plastic Toys; Wardie Mastermodel; Wardie Sentry Box; Wooden Sentry Boxes;
All of them in size-order with the two 'middle' ends duplicated and the addition of the little Airfix one from the Guards Colour Party on the far end of the last line-up. The Athena one should have a sentry glued to it - like the Reisler one

Favorite? I quite like the little may-not-be-Mastermodels may-not-be-diecsat, I'm 'pleased' with the Speedwell from the big purchase, but I don't think you can beat the octagonal Reisler with its pointy, fairy-tale roof and Royal-cipher transfer if you are thinking of starting a collection of these.

Now, it was the arrival of the two wooden-ones from Chris that pre-empted this post, the two (now three) tubs had been here for some time waiting for a post's photo-shoot, but also waiting to have the sentry-boxes here sorted into them, which may not have happened? I can't remember!

It doesn't really matter, but there may be a creamy- or dirty-white version of the yellow Hong Kong one somewhere, and possibly a Starlux one (another common one for tourism reasons) although we have seen the small-scale version here at Small Scale World in the past. Also missing is the Hong Kong [and/for] Cavendish one, with its plinth, but that's also been on the Blog, recently!

I have another small-scale lead one somewhere, which featured with a penguin and some Danish Guards years ago, possibly on HäT as a long-gone Imagshack-upload, but I'm not sure where they've ended-up . . . they're here somewhere; along with a flat one.

There are plenty of cheapie-kahki types from rack-toy playsets, but they are another thing altogether, there's a few small-scale card ones kicking around in the 'paper' crate I think and I used to have the mail-away with 'stars' 1:12th Action Man one, which differed in design from the retail one, both were heavy, mounting-card.

Also Fujimi, Hasegawa and Nitto produced small ones with check-point kits as did Airfix in 1:32, in fact I think I have one somewhere? I seem to recall a bag of grey polystyrene bits (no bridge?) came in at some point - possibly from Jim?

So, we'll have to return to them sooner rather than later! In the meantime, thanks to Chris for triggering this post.

C is for CharlyKit; Dulcop's Pocket Swoppets!

As we seem to be in Italy today! Only a brief one but hopefully interesting, and definitely one of the more important 'bricks in the wall' of our hobby or what we do, even if you - specifically - don't collect the novelties or action figure types.

And . . . I Know; it should be the first day of Rack Toy Month, but I've so much non-rack-toy in the queue I forgot, but there's lots of RTM posts as well, so it'll all happen, I just don't know what order . . . then there's PW and Toy Fair posts!

Cane; CGGC; CharleyKit; Charly Kit; CharlyKit; Dulcop; Dulcop Minifigs; Dulcop Plastic Figures; Grisoni; Kinder Figurines; Kinder Minifigs; Pop Together Toys; Popetts; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com;
Dulcop's CharlyKit; little pop-together figurines, they would later be supplied to Kinder, and were much copied by other people both in Hong Kong and Europe (specifically Soviet-Russia) and in various sizes, although they may have themselves been influenced by Playmobile/Little People? Seemingly aimed at a 'pocket-money' market and similar to Spain's sobres, this appears to be an attempt by Dulcop to nick some of Cane/Grisoni (CGGC)'s market-share.

There are at least 12 different versions listed on the box, and it's all down to plastic colours and the 'tool' or accessory-runner, which has a hat/headdress and couple of accessories for the otherwise identical figures, each of which have eight points of articulation, once they're put-together.

Cane; CGGC; CharleyKit; Charly Kit; CharlyKit; Dulcop; Dulcop Minifigs; Dulcop Plastic Figures; Grisoni; Kinder Figurines; Kinder Minifigs; Pop Together Toys; Popetts; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com;
As I say; I don't know who came first CharlyKit or Playmobile, but I'm sure both pre-date Lego Minifigs, which make the awards the Toy Industry have given Lego for their Minifigs a bit of a mystery, but then they've had similar awards for the bricks they stole from Hestair Kiddycraft, so a pattern developing there I think!

As well as Kinder and Hong Kong I have a feeling I've seen these copied in Russian packaging from the tail-end of the Soviet-era . . . mid-1980's?

M is for More Italians

Another PW show-lot, these are the Italian Air Force bazaar/rack-toys, also copied from the Coma originals in a smaller scale.

50mm Toy Soldiers; 60mm Toy Soldiers; Atlantic Bersaglieri Band; Atlantic Toy Soldiers; Bazaar Figures; Bersaglieri; Bersaglieri Bandsmen; Co-Ma Air Force; Co-Ma Bersaglieri; Co-Ma Toy Soldiers; Coma Air Force; Coma Bersaglieri; CoMa Italian Toy Figures; Coma Toy Soldiers; Figurines Bazaar; Italian Air Force; Italian Toy Bersaglieri; Italian Toy Figures; Made In Italy; Plastic Bersaglieri; Rack Toy Figures; Small Scale World; Vintage Italian Toys; Vintage Toy Soldiers;
Clearly sharing a sculptor with some of the earlier Atlantic 'Italian Army' and Hitler/Bersaglieri sets (not the later WWII sets), they have similar poses and the para's have guys jumping over old branches too!

Four ground-crew/perimeter defence and two desperate-looking pilots; the guys with side-hats would make useful WWII summer Soviet infantry; although I think the rifle-grenade would have to go!

The metallic-blue plastic colour is similar to the side-hat'ted Cofalu I have in the storage zone (now the garage!), and when I find them I'll do a comparison, but I'm pretty sure these will prove to be noticeably smaller.

50mm Toy Soldiers; 60mm Toy Soldiers; Atlantic Bersaglieri Band; Atlantic Toy Soldiers; Bazaar Figures; Bersaglieri; Bersaglieri Bandsmen; Co-Ma Air Force; Co-Ma Bersaglieri; Co-Ma Toy Soldiers; Coma Air Force; Coma Bersaglieri; CoMa Italian Toy Figures; Coma Toy Soldiers; Figurines Bazaar; Italian Air Force; Italian Toy Bersaglieri; Italian Toy Figures; Made In Italy; Plastic Bersaglieri; Rack Toy Figures; Small Scale World; Vintage Italian Toys; Vintage Toy Soldiers;
I also picked-up a Bersaglieri officer and he's here posed with two believed-Coma Bersaglieri originals and an Atlantic Bersaglieri bandsman for comparison.

N is for Not Co-Ma . . . Except the Ones that Are!

Strangely these appeared on Shitestuff the other day, grandly announced to his eager readership by the 'legend' that is TJF (legend in his own lunchtime!) as Co-Ma figures, but . . . err . . . they aren't! Anyway, in the interests of setting things straight (again!) let's look at them here, now . . . and dispel a couple of recent myths!

Basa Barbarians; Basa Romans; Basa Vikings; Co-Ma; Co-Ma Barbari; Co-Ma Barbarians; Co-Ma Romans; Co-Ma Toy Soldiers; Co-Ma Vikings; CoMa Ancient Warriors; CoMa Roman Toys; Coma Toy Barbarians; Coma Toy Romans; CoMa Vikings; Made In Italy; Res Plastics Barbarians; Res Plastics Romans; Res Plastics Toy Soldiers; Res Plastics Vikings; RP Barbarians; RP Romans; RP Toy Soldiers; RP Vikings; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Vintage Plastic Figures; Vintage Toy Figures; Vintage Toy Soldiers;
I bought six (a 'set') of the seven above (we've looked at the gunmetal one - top left - in the past) at the recent PW show in Whitton/Twickenham, and - hurrying (so many bargains, so little time!) - failed to notice until I got them home that in fact half of them were Res Plastic's issues and the other half were the dwarfish copies/piracies of the original Co-Ma Romans and Barbari or (and henceforth-) 'Vikings'.

Knowing (after a call) that they would reappear at Sandown Park I prepared the above drawing (read scribble!) to help sort out any remaining figures (I knew they'd sold well on the day) and hopefully find some of the ones I needed.

Taking the picture above for the hell of it, I realised I didn't actually need the drawing, as I could just load the images of the figures back onto my camera and use that, so no real reason to subject you to my skeletal-zombie figures either, but I have!

Basa Barbarians; Basa Romans; Basa Vikings; Co-Ma; Co-Ma Barbari; Co-Ma Barbarians; Co-Ma Romans; Co-Ma Toy Soldiers; Co-Ma Vikings; CoMa Ancient Warriors; CoMa Roman Toys; Coma Toy Barbarians; Coma Toy Romans; CoMa Vikings; Made In Italy; Res Plastics Barbarians; Res Plastics Romans; Res Plastics Toy Soldiers; Res Plastics Vikings; RP Barbarians; RP Romans; RP Toy Soldiers; RP Vikings; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Vintage Plastic Figures; Vintage Toy Figures; Vintage Toy Soldiers;
Almost total success was achieved with another of the copies secured, and all three of the missing RP's truffle-hunted from the pile! The same Stadsshite post also explained to its readers that some of the figures had holes for weapons (as - of course - the Co-Ma originals did), this too was a failure of TJF's 'knowledge base' . . . and his abilities to study photographs; two of the figures have crude daggers where they used to have ring-hands in the original, which these aren't!

Basa Barbarians; Basa Romans; Basa Vikings; Co-Ma; Co-Ma Barbari; Co-Ma Barbarians; Co-Ma Romans; Co-Ma Toy Soldiers; Co-Ma Vikings; CoMa Ancient Warriors; CoMa Roman Toys; Coma Toy Barbarians; Coma Toy Romans; CoMa Vikings; Made In Italy; Res Plastics Barbarians; Res Plastics Romans; Res Plastics Toy Soldiers; Res Plastics Vikings; RP Barbarians; RP Romans; RP Toy Soldiers; RP Vikings; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Vintage Plastic Figures; Vintage Toy Figures; Vintage Toy Soldiers;
A similar exercise was carried-out with the Romans, but no similar success was forthcoming, so it's just the three to add to my Co-Ma originals and previously seen copy. It seems the 'fallen helmets' added to the bases (and passed on to the RP re-sculpts) were something conjured by the first copyists who made the above figures, each helmet lying approximately where a bump lays in the Co-Ma original's grass-etched bases.

Basa Barbarians; Basa Romans; Basa Vikings; Co-Ma; Co-Ma Barbari; Co-Ma Barbarians; Co-Ma Romans; Co-Ma Toy Soldiers; Co-Ma Vikings; CoMa Ancient Warriors; CoMa Roman Toys; Coma Toy Barbarians; Coma Toy Romans; CoMa Vikings; Made In Italy; Res Plastics Barbarians; Res Plastics Romans; Res Plastics Toy Soldiers; Res Plastics Vikings; RP Barbarians; RP Romans; RP Toy Soldiers; RP Vikings; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Vintage Plastic Figures; Vintage Toy Figures; Vintage Toy Soldiers;
A couple of comparisons; the copies are much smaller than the Co-Ma donors, but RP beefed them up again, a bit, and while the Co-Ma figures were hard polystyrene, the copies are a soft polyethylene. Note that the gold copy doesn't have horns, but rather two stumps or studs, which seems to be deliberate, but could be a short-short moulding?

More interestingly, the RP's are - mostly - also a soft polyethylene, but one or two of them are the harder ethylene or polypropylene of the gold Romans we've seen before . . . seen rather too much-of, some might feel, but I see Erwin was whinging (again) back at Christmas that he'd never used the RP's, even though the Vichy's limp-dicked hussar (born from the thigh of an angry, retarded troll) has taken my cropped enlargement of Erwin's 'Peruvian' RP figure to illustrate his (hussar's) RP entry in a spreadsheet!

Which is itself (the spreadsheet) equally interesting, as it's also full of my images, despite the limp-dick having gone on record as 'barely knowing' and 'rarely visiting' my site! But I'll be dealing with several of his utterances in a separate post.

They're all awful; the TJF & the PSTSM, the Vichy French and AFD's, along with the three lick-spittle Aussies (Hall, O'Connell and Pye)by turn ; hypocritical, shite-talking, envious, plagiarists, making it up as they go along, or sitting in other-people's dust and vociferously talking-up each other's nonsense in a group-hug of fuck-wittedness!

Basa Barbarians; Basa Romans; Basa Vikings; Co-Ma; Co-Ma Barbari; Co-Ma Barbarians; Co-Ma Romans; Co-Ma Toy Soldiers; Co-Ma Vikings; CoMa Ancient Warriors; CoMa Roman Toys; Coma Toy Barbarians; Coma Toy Romans; CoMa Vikings; Made In Italy; Res Plastics Barbarians; Res Plastics Romans; Res Plastics Toy Soldiers; Res Plastics Vikings; RP Barbarians; RP Romans; RP Toy Soldiers; RP Vikings; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Vintage Plastic Figures; Vintage Toy Figures; Vintage Toy Soldiers;
Although I let the gold RP go six-years ago, I had taken loads of images (although I think I'm using this one again? Doh!), so we can look at all three types together. Obviously, the Res' is scaled 'by eye' but when seen together, he will be found to be slightly larger than the copy but noticeably smaller than the Co-Ma original.

Co-Ma's sculpt is a well-proportioned, proud, graceful figure; sculpted with some care (for the 1950/60's), striking hard, two-handed, at an enemy he is clearly making eye-contact with, a sweeping stroke which will - hopefully - remove the protagonist's head!

The metallic-blue one is a much-poorer copy, the neck lost and the legs shortened leaving an over-developed torso. He is still 'in-line' with his base and remnants of the Co-Ma details (buttons and things) are there, but he's swinging his sword with less purpose!

While Res Plastic's figure is (like the rest of both their sets) a re-working, which seems to refer to both the previous versions; anatomy has improved toward the original, but the neck is still missing, the torso has been turned slightly, and with a further slight turn of the head he is swinging more wildly (in the 'ineffectual' rather than 'angry' sense of the word), the 'fallen helmet' has been cleaned-up (but retained), the buttons, however, have been replaced with some poor machine-tool marks aping the leather segments of the original's 'cuirass' - it's probably got some Latin name! Leatheretta-segmata jerkinius?

The fact that the slight musculature on the Co-Ma figure's right wrist/forearm has - by the incidence of the RP figure - become large welts or scales, suggests the employment of a pantograph in both copying exercises, but work has also been done by hand (body posing), and machine-tools (leather, 'fallen helmet') to change the copy-sculpts slightly.

Another comparison, Co-Ma to the left and two of the copies; I've placed a bit of Blue-Tac under the gold figure to give a suggestion of the missing RP version.

It is a fact, that despite seven or eight mentions, posts or forum threads on these figures over the last 24-months, here and with the derisible-duo, as yet, no evidence has come to light of fourth or fifth types, apart from that rather-odd set, looking like RP's but with hexagonal holes in their backs - where you might expect to find the RP marks! I believe they are an act of vandalism designed to win an argument - which the authors' had already lost?

There is little or no evidence of DSG figures either, except insofar as with both hard and soft plastic versions of RP-marked figures around, DSG may have run the mould (which they are known to hold, or have held) unchanged, or wholesaled/retailed the/some leftover RP-marked stock. I say "little or..." as - if they are genuine - the hex-hole figures seen on Shitestuff may be DSG, but they weren't presented as such by 'Cheech & Chong'!

Neither is there any empirical evidence of Basa having ever carried the Co-Ma figures (which they may have done) or produced their own copies - which they almost certainly didn't. As they (Sterwin) have led us round the garden-path several times trying to cover-up Erwin's original falsehood (that the gold RP's were Peruvian product), one has to ask why they still visit these figures? The figures announced the other day in the 'other place' (as he refers to me!) as ring-handed Co-Ma, are neither Co-Ma, nor ring-handed!

Indeed, while my own ministrations over the course of the debate have provided some facts by way of obvious conclusion, the pathetic pair of poltroons have provided piss-all of pertinence and only succeeded in confusing themselves and each other as we saw earlier in the journey!

The two figures have - in point of fact - been armed with crude daggers, made by simply drilling into one half of the tool and removing the little spigot with would have formed the hole in the hand, so that both the hole and the drill fill with polymer, creating a stumpy, stabbing instrument!

Or, at least, it would be how the originator might do it, the pirates' just avoid the hole while- (or fill it in before-) pantographing, and then only have to drill the stabber-stud!

On the subject of the copies; I don't know who produced them, it may be in the latest book on Italian figures (which I don't have), but I don't recall it being in the earlier volume (which I do have!), it'll probably be someone like Plasticrom (Cané/Grisoni), PRB or Ro-Plast who were all producing rack-toy/'bazaar' stuff and/or knock-offs, in the 1970's?

Given the metallic colours' similarity to those Cane 54/60-mil Vikings which were everywhere about fifteen/twenty years ago (I think PB Toys still have a load?), they may be a Grisoni branded thing?

One is tempted to wonder - given that other people produced several versions of their main earners (Britains khaki Infantry or Starlux combat troops for instance) whether Co-Ma were involved in the soft-plastic copies, but the copies are so poor, that seems unlikely.

True: Britains Hong Kong khaki infantry were as poor compared to their grandparents, but there was a longer period of time between the two generations, and the market had moved-on further when those late PVC atrocities came out of the Far-Eastern colony.

Comparison between the five 'pairs'; you wouldn't be hiding those shield-located marks so easily with a heated screwdriver!

When you look at something as closely as we've ended-up looking at these recently, you tend to end up with as many new questions as answers, and with these as well as who made the first set of copies it's also how Co-Ma allowed these copies to come-about, in the same country?

But looking - again - at Britains, who are known to have defended their intellectual property many times both in the hollow-cast and the plastic eras, yet still suffered loads of piracies, particularly of the khaki infantry, including a few UK-based companies, it may be that sometimes it's easier to turn a blind-eye than try to challenge in court, especially if slight changes to the sculpts will only provide a pay-day for the lawyers!

Also, Co-Ma did change direction, first toward kits and railway accessories, while by the 1980's they were producing more infant-targeted toys and big bath/beach stuff, and those changes seem to have begun quite soon, hence the interest in genuine examples of their [original] figures, in a sea of copies? Perhaps they granted permission for some of the cloning; perhaps they couldn't care because the clones weren't treading on their 'new lawn'?

News, Views Etc . . . Airfix Blog - Space Warriors Page Update

Continuing today's space theme; I've added a bunch of comparison shots between the Airfix Space Warriors and various other sci-fi figures, these are to be the first of many, so 'watch this space'!

Looking today at various Hong Kong/Hing Fat sets, Cromoplasto and Torgano from Italy, LB (Lik Be), Thomas/Poplar and a couple of Timpo's Captain Scarlet figures.

LP is for LB - Part 3 - NAS'Astronauts!

This was going to be a five-parter, but there's not a lot to add by looking at the small versions of this morning's two sets, so as a box-ticking 'closure' we'll look briefly at the later (?) addition to the range,  (all two of them!) and call it a day for now.

Almost exclusively cake-decorations, although they did appear in the larger 1970's boxed sets, I used to use a big'ole question-mark with them when ascribing them to the company formerly known as LP; Lik Be, now LB!

Indeed it was the work of the guys at Moonbase in finding the larger sets which confirmed my suspicions vis-à-vis their being 'LP', when they turned-up in sets with silver-chrome or gunmetal spacemen and chromium robots - along with lots of little vehicles, some of which were previously known as Tri-Ang Spacex over here and MPC Golden Astronauts over the pond.

You get a flag, nicely square (no/low gravity . . . and a hidden wire!), a chap with a camera "Watch the shadows dude; or some fuckwitt's'll convince themselves we never got here" and a guy with a sample- . . . spade? Shovel? Scoop . . . a sample-scoop! "It's Orange!"

Often issued with a Luna Landing Module (we've seen them here before with it), and bagged either as generics, or various jobber/phantom brands. Over here it was Culpitt.

They seem to have been sculpted by the same person who was responsible for the Robots/Aliens, but a little later - I suspect (?) - with the same base-underside styling and a similar mark, but without the LB cipher.

Which brings me to another question-mark, which remains a question-mark despite my being 90% sure (hedging a tad!), due to a lack of empirical evidence, but I think the AWI red-coat Airfix 'Washinton's Army' piracy, cake decorations (who DO have a blue-jacketed issue in the US - see 'AWI' passim), are also by the same guy, and - being in the same plastic - must be LB too, probably along with at least one set of the 'Spirit of '76' trio, the smallest set in hard polystyrene.

For the missing small scale posts, you can't do better than go here for the spacemen . . .

While the vehicles - which I'll have  a box-ticking on at some point (I don't have a particularly full sample) - are all to be found here.

As these are 'plastic smalls' they should prove to be of no interest to those so recently of changed minds as to whether they are IDL or LP, but I'm now calling them LB!

LP is for LB - Part 2 - Full Size Robots

Alongside the - previously 'LP' - astronauts were six robot types, although some people think of them (or some of them) as aliens; some of the packaging back in the day wasn't fussed and it's fair to say several of them can be painted-up as life forms.

But for simplicity's sake, I'm thinking of them as robots here, and, because in the small scales they were usually in some form of metallic finish; I've always thought of them as robots, having collected the small ones first!

While the Spacemen have grown considerably over the years as a sample, I don't think I've picked-up a single extra robot (in the large scales) since I last blogged them a decade or so ago, both here and at Moonbase, so this post is more of a re-hash!

Only four of six in the earlier chromium-plated line, and one of them is a silver-sprayed late version, run after conversion to a key-ring, or even a key-ring, sans ring! One of the missing poses is below (next image) but the other has eluded me, although that's probably because Bill over at Moonbase has amassed a stunning collection of the 'Wotan' bot!

And there are generation of these which match the well-painted spacemen, but they seem to be quite uncommon, which may be in part down to the thinner arms and and/or legs and sticky-out bits leading to damage and a trip to landfill?

These turn-up occasionally with different contents, and their level of survivability suggests late 1970's-early 1980's? The pink bot is one of the missing poses in my small sample, but both it and the green one are key-ring pierced and soft ethylene to match the tank and spaceman. The space-tank is also the poorest type with no pull-back motor and very-proud (of the body) carpet-wheels leaving it looking a bit daft.

While all sizes of both spacemen and robots were issued as Cake Decorations over here and in various window-boxed and carded sets, it seems the large-scale robots were converted to key-rings quite soon which may explain their being harder to find, compared to the astronauts in their un-holed form?

Where the collection has gained is in the field of 'rubber jiggler'/sucker-bots, where I have scored a couple of lots in recent years, but these aren't LB (LP), but various generations of copy.

I've yet to ID the marking on the green ones (top left) although it's missing from the similarly painted sample (which also has a different HK mark) to the bottom right. The simpler painted ones in yellowy-orange have similar HK marks to the larger-lot, but look like those issued or marketed by Mei Kee (marks MK or T [-in-a-circle]) of the New Territories.

The detail and marking differences point to more than one maker, but batches - over time - could have equal variance? Or, several smaller plants could have been working on larger orders (with Imperial maybe or someone like that; one of the capsule-toy importers?) with sets of duplicate moulds.

Thankfully, I have lots of Wotan-bots in these jiggler samples!

I think I shot this after I'd found a few more, or realised that the contents of two bags were the same issue, anyway they are the bottom-left lot in the previous shot, but with additional poses, some colour variations and a couple of damaged samples.

I've inset a screen-cap of a Mei Kee compared with the middle-left one. Are they the same? I have a feeling the MK ones have a slight rim or ring-edge to the sucker?
