About Me

I’m a 60-year-old Aspergic gardening CAD-Monkey. Sardonic, cynical and with the political leanings of a social reformer, I’m also a toy and model figure collector, particularly interested in the history of plastics and plastic toys. Other interests are history, current affairs, modern art, and architecture, gardening and natural history. I love plain chocolate, fireworks and trees, but I don’t hug them, I do hug kittens. I hate ignorance, when it can be avoided, so I hate the 'educational' establishment and pity the millions they’ve failed with teaching-to-test and rote 'learning' and I hate the short-sighted stupidity of the entire ruling/industrial elite, with their planet destroying fascism and added “buy-one-get-one-free”. Likewise, I also have no time for fools and little time for the false crap we're all supposed to pretend we haven't noticed, or the games we're supposed to play. I will 'bite the hand that feeds', to remind it why it feeds.

News, Views Etc . . . Forthcoming Events

If there isn't a show listed near you this coming weekend, I'm guessing you're not actually in the UK this weekend! Or you live on an island somewhere! Ten shows including Spalding and Kempton Park, what's to complain about?

Although, of all the shows listed this weekend, Brussels is the one to be at, it's probably bigger than Sandown, and so much stuff turns up at all those big Belgian and Dutch shows, it's like all your Christmases come at once!

As, after March, it might be a real pain to attend such shows (thanks Bwreakshiteers!), this may be your last chance to hop in the car, hop across the Channel, grab some Euro's on the way and have a bean-feast, in the future it may be 3-quid for a Euro; ordered in advance, visa's ordered months up-front (if you have a passport), customs queues - there and back, import duty on your show-plunder, French traffic violations every five miles . . . !

P is for Piggy-Wiggies

In the big box from Jim there was the now known pig from Zip, along with another one, beautifully marked, but following the 'same colour plastic/paint' rule established the last time we looked at these here, I looked a little closer, and seem to have nominally ID'd a couple more.

1:32nd Scale Farm Animals; 1:32nd Scale Toys Animals; 54mm Farm Animals; 54mm Figures; Colonil; Colonil Animals; Colonil Farm Animals; Colonil Piglets; Colonil Pigs; Colonil Premiums; Ethylene Toy; Farm Animals; Farming Figures & Animals; Made in China; Made in Hong Kong; Piglets; Pigs; Polyethylene Toy Figures; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Zip; Zip Animals; Zip Farm Animals; Zip Piglets; Zip Pigs; Zip Sow;
First, the marked pair, the previously identified pig is on the right, in a new pale pink colour (like those Goshen Fair pigs!), the newly discovered sculpt is on the right, in a plastic shade matching the previously seen version. Note that she also has a relatively uneven engineer's letter stamped 'HONG KONG' in addition to the ZIP-mark.

1:32nd Scale Farm Animals; 1:32nd Scale Toys Animals; 54mm Farm Animals; 54mm Figures; Colonil; Colonil Animals; Colonil Farm Animals; Colonil Piglets; Colonil Pigs; Colonil Premiums; Ethylene Toy; Farm Animals; Farming Figures & Animals; Made in China; Made in Hong Kong; Piglets; Pigs; Polyethylene Toy Figures; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Zip; Zip Animals; Zip Farm Animals; Zip Piglets; Zip Pigs; Zip Sow;
However, on looking at all the pigs (there was 50 or so altogether in the box) it was obvious that two of the totally unmarked pigs went with the older sculpt, including a second of the newer-found sculpt - all upper shot.

While the lower shot harks back to the priapism of horses in the previous post (above link), only it's an un-ascribed generic pig which is priapic this time, the Zip pig seemingly a eunuch!

1:32nd Scale Farm Animals; 1:32nd Scale Toys Animals; 54mm Farm Animals; 54mm Figures; Colonil; Colonil Animals; Colonil Farm Animals; Colonil Piglets; Colonil Pigs; Colonil Premiums; Ethylene Toy; Farm Animals; Farming Figures & Animals; Made in China; Made in Hong Kong; Piglets; Pigs; Polyethylene Toy Figures; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Zip; Zip Animals; Zip Farm Animals; Zip Piglets; Zip Pigs; Zip Sow;
I stress, these are nominal ID's, as they are unmarked, but like the two foals last time, I'm pretty sure they are Zip and will continue to look out for other additions to this growing 'known' line and/or an actual set.

You can see from the whole sample (bags are, from the left; 1 Britains, 2 other British/known and 3 Zip/believed Zip) that there is a lot still to ID as far as HK/China-piggies goes! I have larger numbers in the attic and more in the garage from storage . . . one day, he says with little belief; one day! Actually, I think the marbled one and the similar gray ones along with some of the black ones are actually Corgi but they can wait for a better sorting session.

C is for Coral Cougar!

Following my find of the foot-balling PinkPanther back in June (actually I think it was May . . .mas nicht!) I had a quick search on-line and found a bunch of them going cheap, so grabbed them while I could and they were going to be a quick follow-up, but got lost on the PC.

I found them again but rack-toy month had got going and I was running-about with the move and stuff, then they sort of got forgotten in September, by which time I had found another!

Evening Dress Pink Panther; Key Rings; Made in Hong Kong; Made in Spain; Novelty Figurine; Novelty Figurines; Novelty Key Rings; Panther Pink from Head to Toe; Pink Panther; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Yolanda Pink Panther;
I've since seen several sets of four, various odds and another larger lot, so not rare, but fun! Baseball, basket ball, footballer (seen before) and a surfer-dude; Panthers pink from head to toe.

Evening Dress Pink Panther; Key Rings; Made in Hong Kong; Made in Spain; Novelty Figurine; Novelty Figurines; Novelty Key Rings; Panther Pink from Head to Toe; Pink Panther; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Yolanda Pink Panther;
There appear to be two versions, one fully stamped with licensing stuff, the other blank, and at least 20-years old, so probably actual PVC not one of the modern synthetic substitutes.

Evening Dress Pink Panther; Key Rings; Made in Hong Kong; Made in Spain; Novelty Figurine; Novelty Figurines; Novelty Key Rings; Panther Pink from Head to Toe; Pink Panther; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Yolanda Pink Panther;
I picked this-up as a make-weight in a mixed handful at the recent Sandown Park show, Yolanda's err . . . Orange Panther! Full evening dress, spats and a bunch of flowers, he's clearly off to woo a lady-girl panther - is she pink . . . or orange? I'm guessing he's from a set of more than one pose!

A is for Archive - BBI Elite Command

Not their finest hour!

54mm Figures; BBI; Blue Box; Blue Box BBI; Blue Box International; Blue Box Toys; British Troops; Classic; Die Cast Toy Soldiers; Die Cast Toys; Elite Command; Elite Command Classic; Fieldmarshal Eisenhower; Fieldmarshal Rommel; General Eisenhower; General Montgomery; General Patton; German Panzergrenadiers; German Storm Troopers; Marshal Rommel; Metal; Metal - Die Cast; Metal 54mm Figures; Metal Toy Soldiers; Model Figures; Roman Auxiliaries Unit; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; US Officer; US Rangers; US Troops;
The Elite Command sets of Romans, Napoleonics and ACW were reasonable if slightly wooden or static sculpting, but most of these WWII figures are pretty dreadful! The six 'Classic' figures on the bottom row are obviously by a different sculptor (or sculptors?) and are much improved, in sculpting, posing and finish; they are also harder to find on evilBay!

Marshals' Rommel and Eisenhower manage to hold a little gravitas by dint of having most of their person and/or detailing covered with greatcoats, but the other three look like clowns dressed-up as famous generals/officers! The American grenade-thrower's all right I suppose, but the kneeling guy? He looks like he's never seen a rifle before!

S is for Shelfie-fest!

So to a shelfies round-up, with various bits that for whatever reason weren’t bought but were shot on the shelf and have been added to the queue (which is rapidly becoming a mountain!) since July, in the order in which they were added;

54mm Figures; Boxed Toy; Combined Harvester; Farm Toys; Farmer Figure; New Production News Views Etc... Rack Toys; New Products; New Ray; News; News Views Etc...; Rack Toy Figures; Shelfies; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com;
I shot this in Smyths, it's a lovely model (and there were other sets - without figures) but I will never have the room or inclination to start collecting items of farm machinery a foot-long!

54mm Figures; Boxed Toy; Combined Harvester; Farm Toys; Farmer Figure; New Production News Views Etc... Rack Toys; New Products; New Ray; News; News Views Etc...; Rack Toy Figures; Shelfies; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com;
But, for ID'ing figures it's worthy of a shelfie, and looking at the base I think we have New Ray as a contender for the originator of Juan's 'Unknown'stretcher team the other day? I say 'originator' as New Ray have done a lot of contract manufacturing and been copied by several rivals, but the heavy, slightly chamfered base is a goodish match!

D&D Distribution Inc.; Dinosaur Models; Dinosaur Toys; Dinosaurs; Hawkin's Bazaar; Hawkin's Bazar; New Production News Views Etc... Rack Toys; New Products; News; News Views Etc...; Rack Toy Figures; Sainsbury's Supermarket; Shelfies; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Tobar Toys; Toob; Tube Toys; Wild World Dinosaurs;
In the middle of August I found the source of the odd dinosaur set looked at here issued by D&D Distribution in the 'States; our old friends Tobar, which means they should be findable in Hawkin's Bazaar, these were in Sainsbury's and although quite reasonable, and my still needing two or three poses, I didn't get them as it's not a priority and buying a toob of mostly duplicates of things which will turn up in charity shops (as the previously posted did) seemed idiotic, so I shelfied them.

Country Show; Farm Show; Goshen Fair; New Production News Views Etc... Rack Toys; New Products; News; News Views Etc...; Rack Toy Figures; Shelfies; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Summer Show;
At the end of August Brian attended the Goshen Fair in Connecticut (like our County fairs, with truck-pulls . . . and - strangely - a cow pie bingo? I bet it didn't still have the horns!!!) and sent a few shelfies of stuff he found at a stall there. This shot is not really SSW-fayre, but nevertheless it's nice to see kids can still get the rack-toy stuff that kept us occupied out doors in the fine weather that always seems to accompany memories of childhood . . .

. . . when you're not remembering long wet days in a North Welsh cottage, playing patience and arguing about nothing with your brother! Dart guns, cap guns, Japanese swords, ninja throwing-stars, a compass and a S.W.A.T. badge - what's not to like there!

Country Show; Farm Show; Goshen Fair; New Production News Views Etc... Rack Toys; New Products; News; News Views Etc...; Rack Toy Figures; Shelfies; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Summer Show;
More of the same!

Country Show; Farm Show; Goshen Fair; Lego Construction Toy; Lego Minifigs; Lego Simpsons; Minifigs; New Production News Views Etc... Rack Toys; New Products; News; News Views Etc...; Rack Toy Figures; Shelfies; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Summer Show;
This is the future, right there! Stalls like this aren't yet 'predominating' but they are becoming more numerous at all shows, Sandown has lots, there were at least two people dealing exactly this kind of thing at Plastic Warrior, and you can't really stop it without imposing a dateline on the show, which would preclude much of interest otherwise.

Country Show; Farm Show; Goshen Fair; Lego Construction Toy; Lego Minifigs; Lego Simpsons; Minifigs; New Production News Views Etc... Rack Toys; New Products; News; News Views Etc...; Rack Toy Figures; Shelfies; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Summer Show;
And look at them - they're NOT rare - but the fact is - there's money in it and there's a demand for it, and there are so many of them, it's hard to keep track . . . it's a much bigger branch of the hobby than ours, but you can't help feeling . . . helpless, when you see it spreading across the show-halls like a virus!

[Wispers - I've got hundreds of the little bleeders, they breed in their box, I swear it!]

Country Show; Farm Animals; Farm Show; Goshen Fair; New Production News Views Etc... Rack Toys; New Products; News; News Views Etc...; Piglets; Pigs; Rack Toy Figures; Shelfies; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Summer Show;
Brian also sent this; American piggy-wigs . . . destined for a S.P.A.M. tin? Two points; one - they look just like the pigs my Grandfather was breeding in the 1960's in North Nott's, and two - they look just like Britains piggy-wigs, especially the piglet scuffling (no spellcheck, that's a real word!) near the camera, cheers Brian . . . made my day!

Dinosaur Models; Farm Animals; Glow in the Dark; New Production News Views Etc... Rack Toys; New Products; News; News Views Etc...; Rack Toy Figures; Shelfies; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Toob; Tube Toys; Wow Toyz; WowToyz Inc.;
Shot these in TKMaxx a couple of weeks ago, nothing special, but they are ID'ing some farm animals I think we've seen here (they may be in a post not used yet from Rack Toy Month, but I think they were in a post a while ago?) and some of those smaller dinosaurs of which I now have about six or eight sets all marked CHINA in the same lettering but clearly from different sources, sculptor, paint-shop &etc.

Branded to WowToyz, they will be in other brandings, elsewhere, for sure.

Carded Toy; Dinosaur Earsers; Iwako; New Production News Views Etc... Rack Toys; New Products; News; News Views Etc...; Poundland; Rack Toy Figures; Shelfies; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com;
Finally a week ago I shot these in Poundland, then weakened and bought the Dino's, even though I suspected they were the same as the little tub of four from The Works (which they proved to be, even down to colours), while the unicorns stayed on the shelf as poor copies of Iwako.

It's now a race to see whether unicorns will be bigger than mermaids this Christmas, flamingos had their day a year or two ago now (and were a more grown-up thing), but cacti are waiting in the wings! I mean it - blow-ups, erasers, candles, pencil tops, puzzles, big-box toys (not cacti!), printed-fabric items, stuffed-toys (including cactuses!) colouring books, cards . . . yada-yada . . . that's shelfies for a while.

DC is for Thompson!

No . . . not Detective Comics but David Coupar Thomson, who took over his father's Charles Alexander & Company, renaming it DC Thompson in 1905, long before the other DC's rise to prominence in the 1930's, although the titles we're looking at here date from the late 1930's.

Of its many titles the most famous to those of us of a certain age and who maybe don't live on the Dundee doorstep are The Dandy and The Beano, and it is to those works of great literary merit we turn today, with help from Brian Berke, Jim (from Sandown), Royal Fail and the good burghers of Dundee!

Although - in Desperate Dan's case it's probably the good burgers of Dundee we should be investigating . . . ?

Beano; Commemorative Stamps; Comic Characters; Cow Pie; Dandy; DC Comics; DC Thompson; DCT Dundee; Dennis Badge; Dennis the Menace; Desperate Dan; Dundee Publishers; Gnasher; Mail Away; McDonalds Premiums; Minnie The Minx; Novelty Figurine; Novelty Figurines; Pin Badge; Plastic Figurines; Plastic Novelties; Postage Stamps; Royal Mail; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; The Beano; The Dandy; Unicorn Miniatures; Whitemetal Figurine;
Minnie the Minx is a female clone of Dennis the Menace, although I don't know which came first, and yes, he predates the other annoying, eponymous clone by decades, she is modelled here for McDonalds Happy Meals in the UK. They both appeared in the Beano

Next to her is a metal Desperate Dan, whose home title was the Dandy . . . Dan-dy . . . geddit! Hay; don't blame this author, it was all puns in British comics! Made by Unicorn Miniatures, we saw their Dan Dare (but dare he eat a cow-pie?) figures, also from Mr. B, at the start of last month.

Beano; Commemorative Stamps; Comic Characters; Cow Pie; Dandy; DC Comics; DC Thompson; DCT Dundee; Dennis Badge; Dennis the Menace; Desperate Dan; Dundee Publishers; Gnasher; Mail Away; McDonalds Premiums; Minnie The Minx; Novelty Figurine; Novelty Figurines; Pin Badge; Plastic Figurines; Plastic Novelties; Postage Stamps; Royal Mail; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; The Beano; The Dandy; Unicorn Miniatures; Whitemetal Figurine;
Minnie's a modern rendition and about 4" tall, while the Unicorn figurine is a tad above the standard 54mm at around 60-mil against the 'berserker', and if you think Dan's looking untroubled by the likelihood of a bayonet-wound, believe me; he's seen far greater dangers off in a trice, indeed I think larger blades have blunted just trying to shave him!

The other Dan in the right-hand image is a plastic figurine of unknown origin, he looks to be very similar to some of the Phidal stuff, whether they've ever tackled UK-specific licences I don't know, and equally he could be a specially commissioned cover-freebie/premium?

Beano; Commemorative Stamps; Comic Characters; Cow Pie; Dandy; DC Comics; DC Thompson; DCT Dundee; Dennis Badge; Dennis the Menace; Desperate Dan; Dundee Publishers; Gnasher; Mail Away; McDonalds Premiums; Minnie The Minx; Novelty Figurine; Novelty Figurines; Pin Badge; Plastic Figurines; Plastic Novelties; Postage Stamps; Royal Mail; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; The Beano; The Dandy; Unicorn Miniatures; Whitemetal Figurine;
The label (dating the figurine (or license) to 2005) suggests the comic's ownership; could he be from the now defunct (or re-purposed) rides at Chessington, or the gift-shop thereof?

We also see a Desperate Dan club badge! There used to be badges for all sorts of kids things, I have Airfix and Corgi badges somewhere, and the Sword Blog (link) regularly passes on news of their badges?

Beano; Commemorative Stamps; Comic Characters; Cow Pie; Dandy; DC Comics; DC Thompson; DCT Dundee; Dennis Badge; Dennis the Menace; Desperate Dan; Dundee Publishers; Gnasher; Mail Away; McDonalds Premiums; Minnie The Minx; Novelty Figurine; Novelty Figurines; Pin Badge; Plastic Figurines; Plastic Novelties; Postage Stamps; Royal Mail; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; The Beano; The Dandy; Unicorn Miniatures; Whitemetal Figurine;
A larger glazed-ceramic Desperate Dan with his 'cow pie' . . . take one whole cow, cover it in pastry, cook it! Simple really and the horns hold the crust up like singing blackbirds! Foreign readers have by this point given-up on the madness - I'm sure; but need to know a Desperate Dan storyline wasn't complete until he'd sat down with a cow-pie with potting-fork and trowel.

The storylines actually often started with his attempts to eat a cow-pie being interrupted, usually by a 'grown-up' giving some kids a hard time!

To the right we see a group shot of Brain's DC characters, with Dennis the Menace and Gnasher (his immaculately well-behaved little dog . . . NOT!) having a bath - as a bubble-bath dispenser, and another McDonalds Happy Meal toy of him causing mischief with a toy spider; a toy of a toy!

While I was awaiting the above to be sent, Jim gave me this in the big box, again I suspect a cover freebie, as it hasn't got any of the 'club' stuff of a send-away, so probably taped to the front of an issue?

Meanwhile a travel piece in the Metro or 'i' suggesting Dundee as a perfect weekend-break showed this, how cool is that; keep your bronze lord-this or nappy-emperor-that, Dundee has Desperate Dan striding across the main square with Dawg!

A is for Archive - House of Miniatures

These are from a little fold-up flyer sent out to customers of House of Miniatures and may be useful for your archives, they aren't the best quality, but they are modern copies taken from early/rudimentary photocopies (1950's Xerox or Roneo's?) and were very pale, so I've had to play with the contrast.

'Swoppet' Guards and Cowboys

The reference to Fusiliers may be accurate, I don't know when they went over to khaki ( 2 Dress) and 'Blues' ( 1 Dress) to match the rest of the infantry, but certainly the Guards 'Scarlet and Bearskin' was the parade uniform/ceremonial dress of fusiliers for the later period of the Victorian or Edwardian eras (indeed - I think they fought in it, in the Crimea?), which in 1950 were era's closer to the toy-maker than post-post-modern 2018!

A is for Archive - Marx Newspaper Ad's

I've had a lazy weekend, took loads of photographs and scanned a fair bit, but didn't really get anything ready for the week, and I'll be lazy for a week or two now as I have tons of other stuff to catch-up on, but I will pop the odd piece up here when I can. Marx Advertisements from the 1950's today...

Also; a big shout-out today for Alex Desforges of Gloucestershire, who 'went the extra mile'.

Mirror - New York

From the locations of the MB stores I'm assuming this is a New York paper, and I think the tatty bit (long since trimmed-off; in the days before digital) stated "Mirror" or it wouldn't be in the notes, but whether in was 'New York Mirror' or just Mirror (or something else-mirror) I can't recall and the note isn't clear - my bad!

The SanToy Land refers to the - missing - ad' above I think?

T is for They Keep Coming!

I picked these up the other day!

Having said I'd go back for the dark-blue team when we last looked at them, I didn't and they've probably all gone by now, that was back in January, but now a third 'player' has bought into the league - Knightsbridge PME Ltd.?

Totally new colours, even the referee has white turn-downs on his socks for a slightly different look to the originally-found Wilton's ref '. The set is following the Wilton's pattern with 3-a-side and two goalies but is the most colourful to date.

Numbering has gone a bit awry, with the true number-one miss-registered and the number-three over-stenciled with a 1, despite 3 being marked on the base-underside and - as a raised moulding - on the shirt!

The card, albeit in black & white, seems to suggest other colourways, so I suspect we'll be returning to them, whether I track-down the blue set or not. And 50p each with two 'free' goals - bargain! Have you found these, what colours have you seen/got, or . . . what brand were they sold under? 'Cos that's three now; I'm gonna' need a bigger tub!

A is for Archive - "Dyna-Mo"

Back in the days before glossy consumer-oriented catalogues, you had to buy the modelling press to find the after-market companies, write to them (enclosing a stamped, self-addressed envelope) and hopefully hear back from them, replies which usually arrived about four months after you'd given-up all hope!

"Dyna-Mo"; 75 South Street; Advertisement; Advertising Flyer; Advertisement; Catalogue Image; DMP; Dyna Models; Dyna-Mo; Dyna-Model Products Company; HO Scale Model Railroad Accessories; Model Railway Accessories; New Jersey; Oyster Bay; Railroad Accessories; Railroad Stuff; Railway Models; Railway Scenics; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com;
In this case, Dyna-Model sent the potential customer a post-card sized flyer, with artwork from their own advertisements in the model railroad press, which as they have credited the magazine, must be artwork wholly or partially 'got-up' by the magazine! Further, the card . . . isn't; it's actually the same glossy sugar-paper as the original magazines and may have been provided by the magazine as a kind of reversed advertising?

The mailed owner has subsequently added the next item issued; R-23 (a sow and piglets), dating the flyer to soon after the magazine ad's had run so probably the autumn of 1947, or 71 years ago!

The owners of DMP have thought to tantalise the applicant with news of new products, by hand, on the back of the flyer . . . but then not actually listed them!
