I’m a 60-year-old Aspergic gardening CAD-Monkey. Sardonic, cynical and with the political leanings of a social reformer, I’m also a toy and model figure collector, particularly interested in the history of plastics and plastic toys. Other interests are history, current affairs, modern art, and architecture, gardening and natural history. I love plain chocolate, fireworks and trees, but I don’t hug them, I do hug kittens. I hate ignorance, when it can be avoided, so I hate the 'educational' establishment and pity the millions they’ve failed with teaching-to-test and rote 'learning' and I hate the short-sighted stupidity of the entire ruling/industrial elite, with their planet destroying fascism and added “buy-one-get-one-free”. Likewise, I also have no time for fools and little time for the false crap we're all supposed to pretend we haven't noticed, or the games we're supposed to play. I will 'bite the hand that feeds', to remind it why it feeds.

R is for Robin's Roustabout Rebels - Part 1 - Sets

I think (with the pink guitarist) we've looked at all the stuff in Glenn's excellent parcel from New Zealand, bar one item . . . it is that item, kindly donated to the blog by Glenn we're looking at in the next two posts.

And . . . Glenn lives literally yards from the epicenter of the horrendous atrocity which struck Christchurch the other day, so please spare a though for him and his neighbours, as I don't think anyone expected the 21st century to visit the fair lands of 'The Shire', so soon, or so violently.

I did cover this topic back nearer the start of the blog due to a lucky find of the smaller figures from Canada, and the larger figures being in the 'Big Purchase' or a tubbed PW Show purchase, I can't now remember - which are mostly the Ri-Toys re-issue figures also supplied to Marksmen.

At the time, I told the story as it was presented elsewhere on the Wibbly Wobbly Way, but the story seems to have changed once or twice since then, and still doesn't seem to be set in stone, so we'll ramble though it and each can draw his own conclusions!

Alan-a-Dale, Archer, Australian Robin Hood, Australian Toy Figures, Bagged Toy Robin Hood, Blondel, Canada, Cereal Giveaways, Cereal Premium Robin Hood, Cereal Premiums, Derwent, Friar Tuck, Kellogg's Canada, Kellogg's Premiums, Kellogg's Robin Hood, Kellogg's Sugar Smacks, Little John, Maid Marion, Marksmen Robin Hood, Marx Figures, Marx Robin Hood, Marx Toy Soldiers, Marx Toys, Merry Men, Minstrel, Much the Miller, New Zealand Robin Hood, Post Cereals, Post Robin Hood, Premium Toy Figures, Premiums, Quentin, Rado Industries Robin Hood, Ri-Toys Robin Hood, Richard Green, Robin des Bois, Robin Hood, Robin of Loxley, Rubenstein Plastic Toys, Rubenstein Robin Hood, Rubenstein Toy Soldiers, Sheriff of Nottingham, Sherrif de Nottingham, Small Scale World, smallscaleworld.blogspot.com, Sugar Smacks Robin Hood, Timothy, Toy Minstrel Figure, Will Scarlet, Will Stutley,
The total extent of my sample with the previously-seen Marx/Rado 60mm's at the top, the new figures from the Antipodes in the middle and the Canada set - also seen previously - below them.

Now a complication in this, is that the Canadian/Southern Cross set/s are based on the Marx 54mm set, of which I have no examples! The 60mm are from Playsets I think (I'm missing all four of the original 'pose variations') while both the smaller sets were issued as Breakfast cereal premiums.

Another complication is that the smaller figures (specifically the Canadian issue) are also credited to Rubenstein, in the 'States, after the Canadians had finished with them (?) but I have never seen them in Rubenstein packaging, nor any empirical evidence for the accreditation, or for the link between Rubenstein and the Tatra 'Soldiers/Warriors of the World/Through the Ages'?

Knowing - as I'm sure by now you do - how much I like my empirical evidence for statements of fact, I'm maintaining a healthy scepticism of the Rubenstein link until I see something more concrete, but it's credible.

However and having said that, my sample - in multi-colours - is supposed to be Rubenstein not Breakfast cereal, which were [apparently] all-green, and an apple green not the jade-green of a couple of mine? Mine are mostly marked 'CANADA' though, which would suggest that even if Rubenstein handled them; they handled them as a wholesale jobber (Erwin's "...so called joggers"!) or a contractor, not as a manufacturer/mould-tool holder.

Or it means the apple-green ones are Kellogg's US Suger-smacks (and/or Rubenstein) while the multiple coloured ones are Canadian Kellogg's? Kent Sprecher's site says unmarked are from Canada and marked ('CANADA') are from the USA, but doesn't mention the unmarked Aussie/NZ ones? But then there are other colours, and I've seen half-and-half apple-green/orange-brown lots/sets being offered which seem to have come together?

Upon posting this - it's changes again! Colours are less of a 'set-in-stone' now and apparently the Canada-marked are Canada-issued, the opposite of two years ago . . . like I said, draw your own conclusions it'll likely have changed again in two years time!

Alan-a-Dale, Archer, Australian Robin Hood, Australian Toy Figures, Bagged Toy Robin Hood, Blondel, Canada, Cereal Giveaways, Cereal Premium Robin Hood, Cereal Premiums, Derwent, Friar Tuck, Kellogg's Canada, Kellogg's Premiums, Kellogg's Robin Hood, Kellogg's Sugar Smacks, Little John, Maid Marion, Marksmen Robin Hood, Marx Figures, Marx Robin Hood, Marx Toy Soldiers, Marx Toys, Merry Men, Minstrel, Much the Miller, New Zealand Robin Hood, Post Cereals, Post Robin Hood, Premium Toy Figures, Premiums, Quentin, Rado Industries Robin Hood, Ri-Toys Robin Hood, Richard Green, Robin des Bois, Robin Hood, Robin of Loxley, Rubenstein Plastic Toys, Rubenstein Robin Hood, Rubenstein Toy Soldiers, Sheriff of Nottingham, Sherrif de Nottingham, Small Scale World, smallscaleworld.blogspot.com, Sugar Smacks Robin Hood, Timothy, Toy Minstrel Figure, Will Scarlet, Will Stutley,
The Marx/Rado-Ri Toys/Marksmen set, from the top-left to the bottom-right;
  • ·         Robin Hood
  • ·         An unnamed 'Merry-Man'
  • ·         Main Marian
  • ·         Friar Tuck
  • ·         Sheriff of Nottingham
  • ·         Little John . . .
  • ·         . . . and three more unnamed Merry Men.
I am missing the four 'adjusted poses' from the original 60mm set which are on Kent Specher's site here (just over half-way down the page), but my 'guy blowing horn' seems to be my only Marx original - the more astute of you will have noticed he had some 'work-done' half-way through preparing the articles - he's as brittle as hell!

Alan-a-Dale, Archer, Australian Robin Hood, Australian Toy Figures, Bagged Toy Robin Hood, Blondel, Canada, Cereal Giveaways, Cereal Premium Robin Hood, Cereal Premiums, Derwent, Friar Tuck, Kellogg's Canada, Kellogg's Premiums, Kellogg's Robin Hood, Kellogg's Sugar Smacks, Little John, Maid Marion, Marksmen Robin Hood, Marx Figures, Marx Robin Hood, Marx Toy Soldiers, Marx Toys, Merry Men, Minstrel, Much the Miller, New Zealand Robin Hood, Post Cereals, Post Robin Hood, Premium Toy Figures, Premiums, Quentin, Rado Industries Robin Hood, Ri-Toys Robin Hood, Richard Green, Robin des Bois, Robin Hood, Robin of Loxley, Rubenstein Plastic Toys, Rubenstein Robin Hood, Rubenstein Toy Soldiers, Sheriff of Nottingham, Sherrif de Nottingham, Small Scale World, smallscaleworld.blogspot.com, Sugar Smacks Robin Hood, Timothy, Toy Minstrel Figure, Will Scarlet, Will Stutley,
The Rubenstein-via-Canada-whoever set was a fourteen count - with the missing archer now in the Antipodean line-up below (see note on next post), these are the slightly finer-detailed of the two sets, but really only noticeable in the thickness of weapon-handles/bow-strings and other thin elements.

Base markings are on one or two circular depressions and are also reading from top-left to bottom-right are thus;
  • ·         Canada / Robin Hood
  • ·         Maid Marian Canada (single ring)
  • ·         Friar Tuck / Canada
  • ·         Canada / Sheriff of Nottingham
  • ·         Little John / Canada
  • ·         Minstrel / Canada
  • ·         [large release-pin mark but no text]
  • ·         Canada / [blank]
  • ·         [blank] / Canada
  • ·         Canada / [blank]
  • ·         [blank] / Canada
  • ·         [blank] / Canada
  • ·         [blank] / Canada
  • [other 'Will Scarlet' archer unknown]
Alan-a-Dale, Archer, Australian Robin Hood, Australian Toy Figures, Bagged Toy Robin Hood, Blondel, Canada, Cereal Giveaways, Cereal Premium Robin Hood, Cereal Premiums, Derwent, Friar Tuck, Kellogg's Canada, Kellogg's Premiums, Kellogg's Robin Hood, Kellogg's Sugar Smacks, Little John, Maid Marion, Marksmen Robin Hood, Marx Figures, Marx Robin Hood, Marx Toy Soldiers, Marx Toys, Merry Men, Minstrel, Much the Miller, New Zealand Robin Hood, Post Cereals, Post Robin Hood, Premium Toy Figures, Premiums, Quentin, Rado Industries Robin Hood, Ri-Toys Robin Hood, Richard Green, Robin des Bois, Robin Hood, Robin of Loxley, Rubenstein Plastic Toys, Rubenstein Robin Hood, Rubenstein Toy Soldiers, Sheriff of Nottingham, Sherrif de Nottingham, Small Scale World, smallscaleworld.blogspot.com, Sugar Smacks Robin Hood, Timothy, Toy Minstrel Figure, Will Scarlet, Will Stutley,
The new kids on the block! An apparent set of twelve poses; the Canadian 'Nottingham has seemingly gone 'walkabout' (with a teenage Jenny Agutter?. . . Who wouldn't?) along with the falling-back/sitting guy, who Glenn suggested might be hiding in a tree, which I thought was a lovely idea. Glenn hasn't seen them Down Under and I don't know if the two were part of that issue?

Again - left-to-right, top-to-bottom
  • ·         Robin Hood
  • ·         Maid Marion
  • ·         Little John
  • ·         Will Scarlet
  • ·         Alan-a-Dale
  • ·         Friar Tuck
  • ·         Much the Miller
  • ·         Will Stutley
  • ·         Derwent
  • ·         Quentin
  • ·         Timothy
  • ·         Archer
They are all named with the exception of 'Archer', understanding - of course - that the modern surname (much encountered in Borsetshire!) is based on the old occupational title!

One should also note that while the Canadian set carries a scaled-down version of the Marx 54mm Main Marian (as the whole set is copied from the Marx 54mm set), the Australian/New Zealand issue uses a new pose as Marion - which I've seen credited to the Marx 60mm 'Richard Green' TV tie-in set's version, but she seems to be actually a wholly new sculpt.

Alan-a-Dale, Archer, Australian Robin Hood, Australian Toy Figures, Bagged Toy Robin Hood, Blondel, Canada, Cereal Giveaways, Cereal Premium Robin Hood, Cereal Premiums, Derwent, Friar Tuck, Kellogg's Canada, Kellogg's Premiums, Kellogg's Robin Hood, Kellogg's Sugar Smacks, Little John, Maid Marion, Marksmen Robin Hood, Marx Figures, Marx Robin Hood, Marx Toy Soldiers, Marx Toys, Merry Men, Minstrel, Much the Miller, New Zealand Robin Hood, Post Cereals, Post Robin Hood, Premium Toy Figures, Premiums, Quentin, Rado Industries Robin Hood, Ri-Toys Robin Hood, Richard Green, Robin des Bois, Robin Hood, Robin of Loxley, Rubenstein Plastic Toys, Rubenstein Robin Hood, Rubenstein Toy Soldiers, Sheriff of Nottingham, Sherrif de Nottingham, Small Scale World, smallscaleworld.blogspot.com, Sugar Smacks Robin Hood, Timothy, Toy Minstrel Figure, Will Scarlet, Will Stutley,
The Ri-Toys packaging; Marksmen used a variety of their own header cards and the guys who ruined the market by going direct to Ri-Toys (Rado Industries would only sell in large quantities) sold loose. Note the additional colours (over my sample) of red, blue and white figures. They only seem to have carried the nine poses, not the 'conversions', so a separate tool for the other four?

I can't find anything on the Australian/New Zealand end, or - at least - not on-line; there's nothing on Astronit and nothing on Crater Critters, so I'm assuming we have Mr. Sibbald to thank for bringing them to us as 'new to hobby' or 'new to Internet'. Cheers Glenn!

A is for Airfix Posting - Jeeps

A new recurring title, for a while at least; I must get the rest of the Airfix stuff up, or at least enough to get each page-post going! Then I can look at finishing the blurb on the existing posts!!

Airfix; Airfix 1652; Airfix Attack Force; American Jeep; Ammunition Trailer; Attack Force Lines; GP Jeep; Hong Kong Jeeps; Jeep & Trailer; Jeep and Trailer; Kinder Jeep; Kinder Maxxi-Egg Jeep; Marx Jeep; Motormax Jeep; Pattern No. 1652; Poly Vehicles; Polyprops; Readymades; Redbox Jeep; Spear's Games; Spear's Jeep; Spear's Trek; Trek Jeep; USA; Willy's Jeep; Zee Jeep; Zyl Jeep; Zylmex Jeep;
Jeeps today, the Airfix Attack Force Jeep, with comparisons of a bunch of others, there will be more to come, these were the ones in the 'Jeep Tub' which doesn't include a lot of the named stuff, nor most of the larger Hong Kong/China pieces, but it's a starter guide!

Airfix; Airfix 1652; Airfix Attack Force; American Jeep; Ammunition Trailer; Attack Force Lines; GP Jeep; Hong Kong Jeeps; Jeep & Trailer; Jeep and Trailer; Kinder Jeep; Kinder Maxxi-Egg Jeep; Marx Jeep; Motormax Jeep; Pattern No. 1652; Poly Vehicles; Polyprops; Readymades; Redbox Jeep; Spear's Games; Spear's Jeep; Spear's Trek; Trek Jeep; USA; Willy's Jeep; Zee Jeep; Zyl Jeep; Zylmex Jeep;
A few points beyond the Airfix aspect of the linked-post; I missed a small silver one (upper image) which comes somewhere between the Spear's Trek (left) and Kinder 'minis' (right) Jeeps; I've also shown the three colours of Kinder Jeep.

Below left image puts the two Marx mini's next to each other, the die-cast offering has the slightly more realistic windscreen position, but both are overall pretty poor sculpts, and copies of the larger-scaled one from the big playsets.

The bottom-right picture compares the two Zee/Zyl/Zylmex and/or Motormax/Redbox Jeeps, one of which has a MASH sticker. They are also different colours and have slightly different wheels.

Airfix; Airfix 1652; Airfix Attack Force; American Jeep; Ammunition Trailer; Attack Force Lines; GP Jeep; Hong Kong Jeeps; Jeep & Trailer; Jeep and Trailer; Kinder Jeep; Kinder Maxxi-Egg Jeep; Marx Jeep; Motormax Jeep; Pattern No. 1652; Poly Vehicles; Polyprops; Readymades; Redbox Jeep; Spear's Games; Spear's Jeep; Spear's Trek; Trek Jeep; USA; Willy's Jeep; Zee Jeep; Zyl Jeep; Zylmex Jeep;
The little silver Jeep seems to go with the two silver/gold cars we looked at a few Christmases ago, to which I've added blue and green ones which were in storage, although they are both cleaner sculpts with fatter tyres and an undercut on the wheel-arch and may be from an earlier/separate issue [wave]. They show all the 'hallmarks' (small, inexpensive, monoblock design) of being gum-ball machine capsule-prizes or Christmas cracker-novelties?

No Dulcop racing cars (or are they PRB or Crescent. . . heh-heh-heh-heh!), but - obviously - they're in the long queue. Too funny, their 'idea factory' now seems to be my 'forthcoming' posts, but I already knew that from the other day . . . all the stupidies sticking together like a pack of mangy dogs!

And now he's bleating he should be allowed to get things wrong, oblivious to the hypocrisy of correcting my Jecsan with the hysteria he did? Too funny, the loons are trying to run the asylum with the support of more loons!

T is for This is Not an April Fool's Post!

From the archive . . .

$14.95¢; 14.95; A Machine Shop-; Bell Products Co.; BPC; Brass; Crafting Items; Crafting Sets; Die Cast Toys; Diecast Toy Accessory; Empire State BLDG. NY 1; Empire State Building; Hobby Set; Mail Order; Miniature Machine Shop; Oh Dad; Plywood Base; Scale Model; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Zinc;
. . . it would have been a thrill back in the day!

Advertising at the same time as you could get two SAE figure-sets - delivered - for $2.25¢, so it's also bloody expensive! And . . . I don't think these are 'working' models like the ones you could build with Mecanno kits or Mammod? Just watch them go round . . . and round . . . and round . . . AND up-and-down; one of them goes up and down!

Running hideously late today (mowing . . . and first Orange-tip!), so eMail's tomorrow now!

'Peter from Belgium' - your figure is Marx, from the safari playsets! Looks like a re-issue?

News, Views Etc . . . Airfix Input

I've added some HK-copies to the 1:32nd-scale Airfix Russian Infantry post/page (link), not sure if I've even added blurb to the rest of the post, but if memory serves (being written at home) I didn't, it was only a few small-scale copies as a page holder and I have a shed-load of catching-up-with to do over there!

1:32nd Scale Figures; 1:32nd Scale Russians; 1:32nd Scale Toy Soldiers; 1:32nd Scale Toys Figures; 54mm Figures; 54mm Plastic Figures; 54mm Russian Infantry; 54mm Toy Soldiers; Airfix 1:32nd; Airfix 1:32nd Scale Figures; Airfix Toy Soldier; Hong Kong; Hong Kong Plastic Toy; Hong Kong Toy Soldiers; Made in England; Made in Hong Kong; Plastic Figurines; Plastic Toy Figures; Plastic Toy Soldiers; Plastic Toys; Rado Industries; Rado Russians; Ri-Toys; Ri-Toys Russians; Russian Infantry; Russian Plastic Soldiers; Russian Toy Soldiers;
It's a perennial problem with me; I start something and then get bored with it! Because I'm writing this at home, to post later, I'm not even sure if the Russian page has been started, but if it hasn't, it will have been by the time you read this!

News, Views Etc . . . Forthcoming Events

Brwreakshit is so unbelievably risible at the moment I can't bring myself to subject you to my opinions this week! "Ray!" Goes at least half of you . . . and the weather has been gardening-weather, not Blogging weather!

I know we're a third of the way through the year already, don't quite know how that happened, but there you go; time waits for no man, and as you get older it goes faster, that's a fact! No - it is; it's a subconscious trick you play on yourself as it’s a percentage of life-lived! So I do know how that happened . . . Doh!

Still, clock's go back Saturday night (another hour stolen from us!), so if you're lining-up one of Sunday's shows, bear that in mind and the weather is supposed to hold for a day or two - only the six events this week . . .

. . . AND - Guys; It's also Mother's Day on Sunday!

Chocolates
Card
Plant or Flowers
Meal/Meal Out/Day Trip

Everything's happening this weekend, except the one thing we've been told would 'absolutely be happening on the 29th' for the last two years! Britain's becoming the world's comedy warm-up act for that obnoxious bellicose trouser-trump over the pond!

Lackadaisical Attitude!

I'm still feeling a bit bleugh, as you may have noticed from the drop-off in postings, but this is the 'queue' as it currently stands, along with all the Wild West, Hong Kong and Airfix stuff seen in similar screen-caps a year ago, so plenty coming/waiting/being prepared and - to that end -  I'm still beaver'ing away behind the scenes!

A few things are waiting on a new scanner which should be up-and-running by the weekend, and I've been photographing Airfix 'readymades' for most of the week, so I hope to start getting more output on the Airfix Blog, and yes - I know it needs lots of blurb on previous posts, but 'everything in its own good time'!

_....----==========<۰۰>==========----...._

P.S. - Stop the presses, I have a bunch of emails but no time to answer them today, so I'll try to have a session on Monday!

F is for Follow-up - Kit Cars

I'm definitely in an unproductive phase, not a lazy phase, just an unproductive phase - as far as the Blog goes; I'm busy sorting the various bits of the collection together, photographing like mad and dealing with eMails in a vaguely timely manner! This week I'm shooting Airfix readymade AFV's for what are well-overdue pages!

Century of Transport; De Gruyter; De Gruyter Premiums; Jet Premium, Jet Petrol, jet gasoline, Jet Petroleum, Jet Gas, Kellogg's Premiums; Lucky Bags; Model Kits; Novelty Models; Old Plastic Toys; Plastic Kit; R and L Premiums; R&L; RL Giveaways; Rosenhain & Lipmann; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Sobres; Vehicle Novelty; Vintage Plastic Kit; Wundertüten;
There are a few follow-ups I'll try to get-up here, over this week, this one comes from the De Gruyter post the other day,, not the best photo's but they're sufficiently illustrative of the pints; it struck me the unknown green one might be the Jet Petroleum premiums, so I dug out the near complete set we looked-at a while ago, and the part set in storage (pleased to say I had the missing '3'), but the question-mark car wasn't one of them!

Eight of eight Jet premiums to the left, manufactured by Rosenhain & Lipmann. The other three - from the other day - on the right.

Century of Transport; De Gruyter; De Gruyter Premiums; Jet Premium, Jet Petrol, jet gasoline, Jet Petroleum, Jet Gas, Kellogg's Premiums; Lucky Bags; Model Kits; Novelty Models; Old Plastic Toys; Plastic Kit; R and L Premiums; R&L; RL Giveaways; Rosenhain & Lipmann; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Sobres; Vehicle Novelty; Vintage Plastic Kit; Wundertüten;
Colours for the jet premiums tend to match the colour of the cars' artwork, but there are shade variations, and left-field alternatives like the orange '4' (the black bits have been painted on by the previous owner) and a black '7'.

Kellogg's (in the tub - for a whole other post another day) introduce a pink, but seem closest to the green of the unknown car.

Barney's site's news!

"We are delighted to announce that we have been chosen to sell a substantial plastics collection on behalf of London collector, Roger Saunders. It is a fabulous single-owner collection of mainly plastic toy soldiers, by Britains and Herald, a feature of which is the large number of early trade boxes and packaging, with many rare gems. Most of the collection was amassed by Roger during the 1970's and has only now come to market for the very first time. There are a number of rare and sought after items and we have listed the first few (farm) models today with many more to follow over the coming weeks."
