About Me

My photo
No Fixed Abode, Home Counties, United Kingdom
I’m a 60-year-old Aspergic gardening CAD-Monkey. Sardonic, cynical and with the political leanings of a social reformer, I’m also a toy and model figure collector, particularly interested in the history of plastics and plastic toys. Other interests are history, current affairs, modern art, and architecture, gardening and natural history. I love plain chocolate, fireworks and trees, but I don’t hug them, I do hug kittens. I hate ignorance, when it can be avoided, so I hate the 'educational' establishment and pity the millions they’ve failed with teaching-to-test and rote 'learning' and I hate the short-sighted stupidity of the entire ruling/industrial elite, with their planet destroying fascism and added “buy-one-get-one-free”. Likewise, I also have no time for fools and little time for the false crap we're all supposed to pretend we haven't noticed, or the games we're supposed to play. I will 'bite the hand that feeds', to remind it why it feeds.

Funny little bunch this week, I'm guessing rocket is Carlton, possibly a 'companion' with a larger action-figure? A Character Options sailor, an unknown cartoony F1 driver, another 'unknown' (blind bag?), called 'Maniac' and a Giochi Preziosi 'Gormiti' to add to their tub! I also picked up another board game today (Thurs.), but given other things it can wait.

These have been building-up in the WTF zone, a couple from Charity Shop lots, the rest from Jim and/or Chris and/or Peter Evans (thanks' chaps). Really only useful if 1) you collect unrealistic dinosaur skeletons (guilty as charged M'lud!), or 2) need a natural history museum ruin in your diorama (you never know - spares box!), or 3) are building a killer skeleton/undead army (oh yes!) . . . so actually, pretty useful really!

Three glow in the dark, two weathered wash and probably four sources? We may have seen one here in a Poundland purchase about nine-years ago?

News Bites

Legoland - That new Lego amusement-park ride announced (here) a couple of weeks ago failed on its opening day and had to be closed 'due to technical issues'!

Brwreakshit - Which; the UK consumer affairs organisation warned that dangerous toys 'could flood into the UK' after Brexit, one hopes that it's over emphasising the risk, but it was one of the risks mooted three-years ago, the announcement was part of a urging of the Government to keep open the European 'safety gate'.

Murder - speaking of Brwreakshit and the steady rise in violent and hate crime over the last three years - Danny Bostock (33) has been jailed for life, after killing a fellow coin-collector for a Peter Rabbit 50p. Having stabbed the owner - Gordon McGhee -14 times he tried to destroy the crime scene with a gas explosion, risking the lives of neighbours; he won't be from the 'hard left' Mr. O'Connell?

Tom Karen - Czechoslovakian-born designer of the Raleigh 'Chopper' and Luke Skywalker's Landspeeder as head of the Ogle design studio, recently collected an OBE and said he was saddened by the modern toy industry.

Nintendo - Have announced two new gaming consoles - that'll mean more toys! The new models are budget and enhanced versions of their existing Switch console.

Spare a thought for an old soldier (Military Cross, bar and cluster - not many of them around), he's currently fighting his last battle and it doesn't seem to be going terribly well, but knowing him as I do, I suspect it might all be part of his cunning plan to cheat The Ferryman out of a fare; it won't work, of course, but it's a good last wheeze and won't cost him an extra minute in either realm...

F is for Fishel's Fetching Fuchsia Firefighters!

Another quickie! I am hoping to get hold of some Internet time on Monday (today as you read), so will try to produce something more substantial for later on, but for now this box-ticking exercise presented itself during the ongoing sorting process.

Marked, they were kicking around about 12/15 years ago and could be seen as the more commercial wave of the newer-styled, civil, die-cast vehicle accessories, all in a similar vein, although the hats are poorly sculpted and the over-all impression is of the Royal Household's Beefeaters on a picnic!

Ooaawahh! I must change the Firemen tag to fire-fighters before someone says something!

WTF is for Whacky Thingy Found

It's currently last Tuesday (as I write), and I'm looking for easy posts to shove up on Bank Holiday Monday, as I've a load of bits to publish for the weekend and no internet on Friday, which means the show dates have to be done tomorrow for Thursday and it's all got a bit bleah! Found this though!

Courtesy of Peter Evans's last-but-one parcel and just a bit of fun to move us away from Easter, it's a stretchy alien, but using a concertinaed-cable action, rather than very elastic silicon or PVC! It's a jewelled-eyes key-ring, branded (probably phantom-) to Gismos, that's it really . . . Cheers Peter!

I is for 'In the Nick of Time'!

Spotted this online, on Monday (15th April), and only arriving an hour ago, I've quickly had it out, photographed it, duplicated 20-odd images for a .gif (hopefully loaded below!) and am now firing off a hurried blurb, before slotting it in somewhere, I think there's only two posts today (Thurs.) so it may be here new, or it may be added to Sunday or Monday?!!!

23-0917-DGN CH; Catering Novelties; Design No. 23-0917; Egg Soldier; Egg Soldiers; Egg-Cup; Forward Fred; Fred; Fred and Friends; G3 Assault Rifle; Gallil Assault Rifle; Genuine Fred; Herts of Stur; Hoobbe; Household Goods; Jason Pang; Kitchencraft; Lifetime Brands; Novelty Egg-Cup; Novelty Figurine; Novelty Toy; Paper Products; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Soldier Egg Cup;
As it arrived; it's tied to several brands one way or another, but more important, it credits an artist/designer, so he should get a name-check first; Jason Pang. It appears to have been designed for Fred (Forward Fred/Fred and Friends/Genuine Fred) 'a division' of Lifetime Brands' (who are also the European distributer as Kitchencraft), sub-branded to Hoobbe and manufactured in China . . . by 'DGN' (if you believe Erwin!) and I got it from Herts of Stur!

23-0917-DGN CH; Catering Novelties; Design No. 23-0917; Egg Soldier; Egg Soldiers; Egg-Cup; Forward Fred; Fred; Fred and Friends; G3 Assault Rifle; Gallil Assault Rifle; Genuine Fred; Herts of Stur; Hoobbe; Household Goods; Jason Pang; Kitchencraft; Lifetime Brands; Novelty Egg-Cup; Novelty Figurine; Novelty Toy; Paper Products; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Soldier Egg Cup;
Out of the box . . . is that a Gallil or G3 assault rifle, seems to be a bit of both?

The marking in full is exactly the same as the previous ones we looked at 23-0917-DGN [CH], which, as per last time is read backwards; it's actually China, Design No. 23-0917, there is no maker called DGN!

If it's worked there's a [rather wobbly] .gif here of a fat-knacker getting some exercise! I should have used a tripod, but is was all a bit rushed!

The egg is a papier-mâché addition to those we've looked at in the past at this time of year! Happy Easter all!

L is for Lone Wabbit and Egg: Bunny Cart at the River Styx!

What? You can't have Easter without an Easter bunny . . .err . . . actually you can, and in ten years here at Small Scale World; we have . . . several times! While the Germans run with a hare. They're going extinct you know; hares and rabbits, terribly sad, but some idiot left some pink monkeys in charge of the planet!

Anyway, that's the first paragraph provided with text . . .

. . . I shot this on Adrien Little's stand at the Plastic Warrior show a year ago (not long now), and have been catching sight of it in Picasa, regularly, ever since, it's a bit of fun but I'll be glad to get it on the dongle now!

Speaking of the dongles - after the Peter Pan Playthings dancer the other day - this is another of the PPP's in the archive, the other obvious one being Pritchard Patent Products, but I have a feeling there's a forth; just one of those little quirks!

Adrian Little; Another Poplar Plastic Product; Boxed Toy; Bunny Cart; Capsule Egg; Capsule Toys; Chocolate Eggs; Contribution; Easter Bunny; Easter Egg; Easter Toys; Mercator Trading; Old Plastic Toys; Plastic Bunny Cart; Plastic Toy Figures; Polystyrene Figures; Polystyrene Toys; Poplar Bunny Cart; Poplar Easter Cart; Poplar Plastics; Poplar Playthings; Poplar Products; PPP; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Vintage Boxed Toys; Vintage Plastic Toy;
The box-art doesn't lie . . . much, there's no sitting 'number two'! It's figural, it's seasonal and it has a bit of age. It would have been filled with smaller eggs, which were sometimes that cheap, gritty, chocolate 'flavor' sugar-candy, but if you were lucky, they were proper chocolate eggs in two halves, held together by the foil, with - if you were really, really lucky - hazelnut-ganache soft centres.

Poplar Plastic Products - Bunny Cart.

Happy Egg'tastic Easter loyal readers!

O is for Ovoid, Ovid 'Old Friends'!

Having posted the small-scale ones several times and seen them also posted elsewhere on the Internet (or in my eMail's inbox) as 'unknown' before remembering they were Tombola, only for Paul Morehead to then remind me that they had been large-scale and branded to Party Pig in Plastic Warrior magazine's issue 82, they've only gawn and turned up again in't they! And they're in Easter eggs - double-bloody-bargain and the yolks on us!

12 Toy Soldier Eggs; Amscan; Blues; Capsule Eggs; Capsule Toys; Chahai; Easter Eggs; Easter Soldiers; Easter Toys; Egg Soldiers; Filled Eggs; Fun Express; Greys; Imperial Pilots; Jaru 'fritz helmet' GI's; Matchbox US Infantry; Omaha - Nebraska; Oriental Trading Co.; Party Pig; Plastic Warrior Issue 82; Plastic Warrior Magazine; Sci Fi Figurines; Sci Fi Toys; Science Fiction Figures; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Tombola; Vaders;
As found on the Internet (left hand shot), there are two outlets on eBay.com that I know of, but there are other sources out there. I had to get a set straight away and what came is the bag on the right, 12 eggs with three each of four designs of egg-wrap, and two colours of polyethylene egg.

The bag has a header card that I think we've seen before (possibly from Brian Berke, but I can't remember if it was as a shelfie or donation) and which is trying to be the current card from  . . . err . . . Amscan - I think (Another Brian B contribution). On posting - Yes; the football erasers (among others).

As we shall see in October, rack toys with these cards can be sourced in the UK with an over-printed branding to Fun Express, here it's a sticker for the Oriental Trading Co. of Omaha, Nebraska (whispers . . . they share their postal code with Fun Express!). There's also a possibility of a Chahai being the actual manufacturer?

12 Toy Soldier Eggs; Amscan; Blues; Capsule Eggs; Capsule Toys; Chahai; Easter Eggs; Easter Soldiers; Easter Toys; Egg Soldiers; Filled Eggs; Fun Express; Greys; Imperial Pilots; Jaru 'fritz helmet' GI's; Matchbox US Infantry; Omaha - Nebraska; Oriental Trading Co.; Party Pig; Plastic Warrior Issue 82; Plastic Warrior Magazine; Sci Fi Figurines; Sci Fi Toys; Science Fiction Figures; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Tombola; Vaders;
Ten poses have gone missing (all nine 'Blues' or 'Imperial Pilots' and the 'Greys' or 'Vaders' standing firing chap), but you get eight different figures and four [different] duplicates so it looks deliberate, and the missing poses don't feature in any of the publicity shots I found, so that seems to be it? I would further venture that from set to set the four duplicates will differ by thirds - thus a fourth tool-shot is split between three 'sets'?

12 Toy Soldier Eggs; Amscan; Blues; Capsule Eggs; Capsule Toys; Chahai; Easter Eggs; Easter Soldiers; Easter Toys; Egg Soldiers; Filled Eggs; Fun Express; Greys; Imperial Pilots; Jaru 'fritz helmet' GI's; Matchbox US Infantry; Omaha - Nebraska; Oriental Trading Co.; Party Pig; Plastic Warrior Issue 82; Plastic Warrior Magazine; Sci Fi Figurines; Sci Fi Toys; Science Fiction Figures; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Tombola; Vaders;
The decoration is nothing to write home (or a blog article) about, but they will be a post-PVC substitute and should take PVA paints with no ill effects, although give them a good wash first, they are quite 'shiny' and that may be a leaching or a mould-release agent.

The guy pointing with his sidearm (bottom right) needs a bit of a hot-water treatment to straighten his weapon, and a few could use a flattening of the base with the same trick - I run near-boiled water over them then slide them across a cold, stone/marble cutting-board.

Sadly - even in the larger scale; their wellington-boots and gauntlets leave them looking as if their next task is masturbating a prize-bull into a jam-jar! Still they have face-mask/respirators so they've got nothing to complain about on the 'protective gear in the workplace' front.

12 Toy Soldier Eggs; Amscan; Blues; Capsule Eggs; Capsule Toys; Chahai; Easter Eggs; Easter Soldiers; Easter Toys; Egg Soldiers; Filled Eggs; Fun Express; Greys; Imperial Pilots; Jaru 'fritz helmet' GI's; Matchbox US Infantry; Omaha - Nebraska; Oriental Trading Co.; Party Pig; Plastic Warrior Issue 82; Plastic Warrior Magazine; Sci Fi Figurines; Sci Fi Toys; Science Fiction Figures; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Tombola; Vaders;
With its usual brilliance for surrealism; Hong Kong/China use completely different figures on one of the shrink-wrapped egg-bands, being those hoary old favourites - a mix of three Matchbox US Infantry and two of the original 1990's Jaru 'fritz helmet' GI's, all five rendered in outline!

Happy Space-War'tastic Easter loyal readers!

E is for Egg Soldiers But Not Toast!

Or at least they are in a folder marked Egg Soldiers and have been edited as the above title for some time san's blurb, but, now I've looked them up, the blurb is here to say they aren't eggs, they're 'Rabbids', geddit? Like rabbits but . . . well, you know all these 'Art Figures; and 'Designer Toys' it all seems to be about death, un-death, disease and/or nihilism!

Art Toys; Cossack Novelty Figurine; Designer Toys; Easter Eggs; Guardsman Bauble; Guardsman Toy Soldier; Novelty Eggs; Novelty Guardsmen; Novelty Rabbits; or Ubil'art l TM; Rabbid Cossack; Rabbid Guardsman; Rabbid's!; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; UBI Art TM;
Anywhoos - These are they! They do look like eggs, and there is an obvious egg-soldiers joke in there for anyone to spot (which is why the title stands), but sadly out of all the Raving Rabbids issued (and they are legion) these happen to be the only two who's ears are hidden by headdress! But Rabbids they are.

A Rabbid Guardsman and a Rabbid Cossack from UBI Art, part of the whole Ubisoft empire, I'm not sure if they are straight-to-store 'art toys' or some sort of game-related characters, my bad, but I don't game and I don't follow designer figures and  . . . I don't care!

God knows what they cost new, but like the Un-Disney-Dunny-Bunny-Bare-Bear-Tiger thing a few Christmases ago, these were among others in a charity-shop pound-bag, and were going to post on Easter Sunday, but have been moved now I know they're not egg-soldiers; bloody imposters!
