About Me

I’m a 60-year-old Aspergic gardening CAD-Monkey. Sardonic, cynical and with the political leanings of a social reformer, I’m also a toy and model figure collector, particularly interested in the history of plastics and plastic toys. Other interests are history, current affairs, modern art, and architecture, gardening and natural history. I love plain chocolate, fireworks and trees, but I don’t hug them, I do hug kittens. I hate ignorance, when it can be avoided, so I hate the 'educational' establishment and pity the millions they’ve failed with teaching-to-test and rote 'learning' and I hate the short-sighted stupidity of the entire ruling/industrial elite, with their planet destroying fascism and added “buy-one-get-one-free”. Likewise, I also have no time for fools and little time for the false crap we're all supposed to pretend we haven't noticed, or the games we're supposed to play. I will 'bite the hand that feeds', to remind it why it feeds.

News, Views Etc . . . Forthcoming Events - Saturday 20th-Friday 26th July 2019

There have always been a few genuine 'headlines' each week, if there hadn't been, the likes of Giles, JAK and Scarf wouldn't have had a job, but right now it seems we have three or four real headlines each day and most of them are mad!

Trump's come out of the closet and declared himself to be an out-and-out and very OUT sexist, racist, Nazi git! . . . Maybe-Maybe-Not attacks Corbyn in the morning and then in the afternoon makes a speech about how bad all the attacking is! . . . A British Govenrment private-jet (not RAF) extradites a terrorist's brother from a war-zone, while Mrs. Zughari-Ratcliffe languishes in prison shackles in a mental health facility for no reason  . . . The Turks take delivery of Russian missiles even as Russia moves its own closer to Europe . . . Oh! And Ebola is out of the jungle and in two cities and another country . . . Great! But the best is that Parliament have prevented the awful Boris from proroguing the administration to force through a no-deal . . . now that's worth a celebration, that and TJF; the 'legend in his own lunchtime' seeing Jecsan where there 'aint none!

Not many fairs this week but plenty of other stuff . . .

Should have looked like this! If it didn't, it's because your machine, or the server you're using doesn't support the font or insert-coding, as with the soldier-writing (below) in the two early-May 'News Views . . . ' it looked fine in 'Preview' because my system does support the font - I'll make an effort to keep it simple in future; clearly the Wibbly Wobbly Way isn't ready for me and my creative genius yet!

Look out! Did I just called myself a genius? That's probably worse than calling yourself a Legend! But then . . . I'm not being serious; it's something about Jupiter's thighs, I'd prefer Athena's but it's out of my hands and in the hands of some fatuous, 70-year old, plagiarist Frenchman!

H is for How They Come In

A week dominated by Rhinoceroses (really should be Rhinocerii!) as it happens . . .

. . . the Phillis Tuckwell hospice shop had what was obviously someone's collection of Rhino's in two baskets for the grand sum of 50p each, and picking-up a glossy one I thought - from a distance - might be Starlux I realised it was hollow-cast even as recalling the Startlux one is not a pretty sculpt. Turned out there was a pair of hollow-casts; Timpo and Britains with hardly any paint-chips, so I took both, along with a carved-stone one which is probably soapstone of some kind?

It's not the dusty pink or grey soapstones I know from Kenya, but a beautifully striated greenish material, which polishes to a vey soapy sheen, with darker dun or khaki layers in it. Sorting them and taking these photographs I wished I'd bought the wooden one I'd also seen in one of the baskets . . .

. . . so the next day I went back for it and ended-up doing a couple of quid on four more! I've probably got the Britains ones already, but paint was good on both and wear minimal, while the China'rhino (inset left) seems to be a modern copy of an older Wing Luen model (inset right); horn is blunter and tail heavier and a rib-groove has been lost.

A more general bag came from Cancer Research, the four large 'infant-toys' (everything in the photograph is an infant toy!) at the rear (two Peterkin 'Baby Dinosaurs' and two generic goats!) will go back to charity I think, while the nicest item is the four-part (probably Kinder) reindeer kit seen middle-right.

Finally; a rare-addition to the 'card and paper' wing of the collection, in the shape of a pyramid, because it's a pyramid! A bit of fun, but a few posed-shots with small-scale ancients probably lie somewhere in its future!

News, Views Etc . . . Airfix Footballers

Which are actually Hong Kong footballers! Additions over on the relevant Airfix page, added the other day.

W is for Wimblebum!

I don't know why we called it Wimblebum, I guess it was all part of the small boys' mentality of 'urrh, girls' and those frilly-knickers they wore so obviously back in the 70's to hide their modesty, like pink meringue-nappies? Now they display the contours of their labia and we're all supposed to pretend we haven't noticed - which is odd, because Linford Christie* got tons of sniggery-flack from the tabloids, for his 'lunchbox'?

In cake decoration-land they are still back in the '70's so I won't have to activate the adult-content button just yet! On the left in each shot are Gemodels/Culpitt's (larger example above and smaller pair below) older figure, on the right the current replacements; findable under different brands including PME Knightsbridge and Wilton.

Size is approximately: 50mm; Gem and 70mm; 'Wilton's', who are really 65mm due to the deep bases and accurately 90/100mm-doll-scale compatible, being obviously children!

100mm Doll-Scale; 50mm Gem; 65mm Plastic Figures; 70mm Wilton's; 90mm Doll-Scale; Cake Decoration; Cake Decoration Figures; Cake Decoration Sportsmen; Cake Tennis Players; Cakeboards; Cullpits; Culpitt; Culpitt's; Culpitt's Cake Decorations; Culpitt's Tennis Players; Frilly-Knickers; Gem; Gem's Sports Figures; Gem's Sportsmen; Gemodels; GeModels Tennis Players; Hong Kong for Culpitt; Kat 817 2; Kat 817A 1; Knightsbridge PME Ltd.; Lunchbox; Plastic Tennis Players; PME Cake Decorations; PVC bases; Small Scale; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Sportswomen; Tennis Players; Vintage PVC Figures; Vintage Tennis Players; Wilton; Wilton Tennis Players; Wilton's Tennis Players; Wimblebum; Wimbledon;
The Gem's en masse; I suspect the larger sculpting (four left-hand girls and first two figures to the left of the boys) is actually the latter, it tends to two-colours and/or an unpainted base while the smaller figures tend to a three colour paint-job, but it's not a hard-and-fast rule, with some three colour larger figures and some two colour smaller figures. And indeed it may be not two generations, but rather a four-cavity tool?

100mm Doll-Scale; 50mm Gem; 65mm Plastic Figures; 70mm Wilton's; 90mm Doll-Scale; Cake Decoration; Cake Decoration Figures; Cake Decoration Sportsmen; Cake Tennis Players; Cakeboards; Cullpits; Culpitt; Culpitt's; Culpitt's Cake Decorations; Culpitt's Tennis Players; Frilly-Knickers; Gem; Gem's Sports Figures; Gem's Sportsmen; Gemodels; GeModels Tennis Players; Hong Kong for Culpitt; Kat 817 2; Kat 817A 1; Knightsbridge PME Ltd.; Lunchbox; Plastic Tennis Players; PME Cake Decorations; PVC bases; Small Scale; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Sportswomen; Tennis Players; Vintage PVC Figures; Vintage Tennis Players; Wilton; Wilton Tennis Players; Wilton's Tennis Players; Wimblebum; Wimbledon;
Like the cricketers - we've looked at here before - there is a set of slightly different copies in a soft PVC; unmarked but probably from Hong Kong for Culpitt, and sharing the bright spring/apple green bases of those Test-Match players.

The lower-shot compares large, small and PVC bases, in that order from the left.

Base marking for the two modern, juvenile types seen in the first image, no real clues to anything here!

The 'Kat' is probably, but not necessarily; 'catalogue number', it could be a manufacturer or client code, the 817 will be a stock code, the girl is suffixed 'A' and (cavity?) 1, the boy gets a 2, but no suffix and they are a hard polystyrene, to Gem's mostly unmarked PE's.

News, Views Etc . . . Khaki Infantry Page Update

Plasticom (Soldabar) has gone on the Khaki Infantry page with much help from Chris Smith, I don't know how many figures were in the set in total, but with a hybrid and a damaged one, we've found five poses between us. They also copied the angle-iron tank-obstacle from the Hong Kong Herald sets which can be found on the Plasticom or Soldabar tags here.

Belgian Premiums; Belgium; Britains Herald Khaki Infantry; Britains Khaki Infantry; British Infantry; Contribution; Crescent 54mm Troops; Crescent Khaki Infantry; Herald Khaki Infantry; Khaki Infantry Premiums; Lolly Sticks; Lollypop Sticks; Lollypops; Made in Belgium; P Brand; Plasticom; Premium Toy Figures; R. C. Tournai 48396; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Soldabar;
I've also moved the Reisler entry down to the foreign section, so the page now runs from the top:  British-Foreign-Hong Kong-Unknown/Detritus; alphabetical where possible, with Timpo out of sequence to keep it at the start of the - growing - page.

Updates on Cherilea, CMV, Timpo and Speedwell are in the pipeline for that page too.

F is for Follow-up . . . Kain?

A quickie, but interesting nevertheless, you remember the three numbered cowboys I showed a while ago in a mixed post of Wild West oddities, well, an Indian has turned-up with the same scalloped-edge base and the same number (in the figure range - 10/30's) in the same font (Ariel Round or one of the Hun/Din's).

32; Cowboys and Indians; Figure 32; Kain; Kain Premium Figures; Native American Indian; Native American Toys; Premium Toy Figures; Premiums; Red Indian; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Wild West; Wild West Premiums;
But this chap is clearly marked Kain? The smudge over the 'K' is where it's caught a finger-nail or something and been scraped a bit flat. I tried Googleing 'vintage kain' and just got loads of fashion pages, so I have no clue as to origins, but it looks like a premium of some kind?

On the downside - he lacks the full-hollow to his base underside and is a Crescent copy, not a Marx sculpt?

So not a follow-up to Kain, but Kain; a follow-up!

Now known to be Greek premiums (product still unknown), there was a latter generic issue as carded rack-toys.

F is for Follow-up - A is for Ally' Animals

When we last looked at these aluminium flats, I said "I was pleasantly surprised to find I had in fact added nine additional animals to the rhino", but it turns out I didn't have a rhino', I had a hippopotamus! And several other figures, only one of which - the goose - is a duplicate, as I can't now find the new ones, we'll have to look at the old ones here, and once I've (hopefully) found some more we'll look at all of them, together, one day?

Aluminium Cockerel; Aluminium Duck; Aluminium Goose; Aluminium Hippopotamus; Aluminium Horse; Aluminium Ibex; Aluminium Mountain Goat; Aluminium Rabbit; Aluminium Squirrel; Aluminium Stork; Cockerel Flat; Duck Flat; Goose Flat; Hippopotamus Flat; Horse Flat; Ibex Flat; Mountain Goat Flat; Rabbit Flat; Squirrel Flat; Stork Flat; Aluminium Flats; Cigarette Premiums; Die Cast Toys; Farm Animals; Flat Figures; German Flats; German Toy Figurines; Goose; Mazac; Metal Toy; Premium Flats; Premiums; Russian Flats; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Stork; Wild Animals; Wild Life; Wildlife; Zamac; Zamak; Zoo Animals;
Actually . . . while I'll leave the above, it makes a good opening paragraph and I had to look up the 'Unknown European Flats' folder in the 'Unknown by Country' folder on the 'Unknown' dongle . . . it's bollocks! The previous post WAS the storage stuff, these have come-in in the last few months!

Sitill unknown Wild Animals; include err . . . a hippo . . . along with a long-horned deer or mountain goat of some kind, ibex? And a stork which makes the previously seen leggy bird look like an ibis or something, collared vulture?

They must have come from Sandown Park, probably from Adrian, I'll thank him anyway as he often puts interesting stuff aside for me.

Aluminium Cockerel; Aluminium Duck; Aluminium Goose; Aluminium Hippopotamus; Aluminium Horse; Aluminium Ibex; Aluminium Mountain Goat; Aluminium Rabbit; Aluminium Squirrel; Aluminium Stork; Cockerel Flat; Duck Flat; Goose Flat; Hippopotamus Flat; Horse Flat; Ibex Flat; Mountain Goat Flat; Rabbit Flat; Squirrel Flat; Stork Flat; Aluminium Flats; Cigarette Premiums; Die Cast Toys; Farm Animals; Flat Figures; German Flats; German Toy Figurines; Goose; Mazac; Metal Toy; Premium Flats; Premiums; Russian Flats; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Stork; Wild Animals; Wild Life; Wildlife; Zamac; Zamak; Zoo Animals;
The domestic animals in this sample are more numerous, restoring the balance, as it was wild animal-heavy, while with the squirrel and rabbit we're looking at woodland creatures as well.

As I said last time, I don't know how large the set is, or if it's several sets, or if they are connected to the caricature Nazi's we looked at first in this sequence. I do still think they were cigarette premiums, but that's still to be confirmed.

F is for Follow-up - Silvercorn / Lollipop

Through the autumn/winter of 2016-2017 we managed to look at all four sets of these with help from Uncle Brian, Brian Berke and Tim/Gisby, in the course of which journey I said I had a few of the micro-AFV's in the storgae 'archive', and these are they!

6x6 AFV; 8x8 AFV; Abbot SPG; Ackerman; AFV Kits; AFV's; Challenger MBT; Hummer; Hummers; Humvee; LAV/Piranha Types; LAV Piranha; Lollipop; LP - Lollipop; M1 Abrahams; M109 SPG; Micro-Armour; Micro-mini; Military Case Land Vehicles; Military Miniatures; Military Vehicles; Pinzgauer; Silvercorn; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; SPG Model; SPG Toy; Terrestrial War Games;
They don't add anything to the previous post - courtesy of Gisby - but I've shot them at new angles which changes one of the tracked beasts somewhat; the one on the right, which had looked quite Challenger-like, actually looks a bit SPG'ish with elements of Abbot or M109?

I'd actually said I didn't think I had any of the tracked vehicles, but I have two-and-a-half! The other whole-one is the one I called an Italian/Argentine/Brazilian 'medium ' type (left-middle), with a modern-looking command 6x6 and Hummer making-up my sandy-sample.

6x6 AFV; 8x8 AFV; Abbot SPG; Ackerman; AFV Kits; AFV's; Challenger MBT; Hummer; Hummers; Humvee; LAV/Piranha Types; LAV Piranha; Lollipop; LP - Lollipop; M1 Abrahams; M109 SPG; Micro-Armour; Micro-mini; Military Case Land Vehicles; Military Miniatures; Military Vehicles; Pinzgauer; Silvercorn; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; SPG Model; SPG Toy; Terrestrial War Games;
In green I have the same 6x6 and the turret-armed 8x8 and usually keep them with opposite coloured wheel-sets, but I swapped them back for the comparison!

The components of one of the tanks, part count is the same for all of them; hull, turret, belly-pan, two universal wheel-sets and two identical track units, the same for all the tanks and bi-directional on any tank. The belly-pans however are model-specific.

I also have a few bits and pieces including the 'Soviet' tank's hull, so it's the 'NATO' one I'm still looking for, and a wheel-less (over-scale) Unimog type (which looked a bit 'Pinzgauer' last time), where I got the "...something like an Sd.Kfz.222..." idea from - I haven't the faintest idea!

I've also discovered that the entire line was issued in a single play-set; ships, aircraft, figures (with accessory runners) and these micro-armour. The whole in a card-carton, full-colour glossy-printed on a paper laminate, imported by Ackerman it was (is?) called 'Terrestrial War Games', I think - but I'm not sure!
