About Me

I’m a 60-year-old Aspergic gardening CAD-Monkey. Sardonic, cynical and with the political leanings of a social reformer, I’m also a toy and model figure collector, particularly interested in the history of plastics and plastic toys. Other interests are history, current affairs, modern art, and architecture, gardening and natural history. I love plain chocolate, fireworks and trees, but I don’t hug them, I do hug kittens. I hate ignorance, when it can be avoided, so I hate the 'educational' establishment and pity the millions they’ve failed with teaching-to-test and rote 'learning' and I hate the short-sighted stupidity of the entire ruling/industrial elite, with their planet destroying fascism and added “buy-one-get-one-free”. Likewise, I also have no time for fools and little time for the false crap we're all supposed to pretend we haven't noticed, or the games we're supposed to play. I will 'bite the hand that feeds', to remind it why it feeds.

T is for There's More - Happy S&S Easter 2019!

Back on track and up-to-date with these shots, Brian did send some other Scully & Scully stuff (I think we've seen one?), but it was eclectic, if exquisite glassware, some of which are in a pending fish round-up and others will filter in to odd posts or as illustrators for points in 'News, Views . . .' type posts in the future.

We'll start with a close-up of the swing vignette from the end of the delayed 2017 post earlier this morning. These are all so well painted and I love the birch-bark on the fence - an idea for gamers looking to paint their trees differently?

No eggs! And the barrow apparently from the Airfix Waterloo Accessory Set!

As always; a huge thanks to Brian for sending these to the blog, and getting such good shots through the store windows. If these don't peak your appreciation of Nuremburg or Kulmbach flats, nothing will - except some liveried knights maybe; you Philistine!

Happy Easter 2019 everyone!

S is for Scully & Scully - Happy Easter 2017!

Do you remember a year ago, when I posted Brian Berke's kindly contributed S&S Easter window display, and waxed lyrical about his other sending's on the same subject - exquisitely painted whitemetal flats, well I had intended to post a link (then) to the previous ones, but couldn't find them, so changed the sentence to some fluff about the previous posts and left it at that.

The reason I couldn't find them was because they had never been posted! I'd posted the Christmas ones, but somehow missed these -  well, there's no 'somehow' about it, they were in a folder within a folder and weren’t showing in Picasa, it wasn't that I'd tagged them wrong, or forgotten to tag them, I'd not put them on the blog . . . so, may I present 2017's Scully & Scully Easter flats, courtesy of Mr B, and apologise to him for losing a contribution!

We've seen this one before in 2018 with a different colour way, and will see it again later! Probably my favourite, there's so much going on! The tree is done as a green one here and as a full cherry-blossom bloom further down the page.

A busy scene to finish, the vignette in the foreground may be from a standard farm range, while the boating couple were also seen last year as a colour-swap; her in green, him in red! They'll be in new colours later, and we'll have a better shot of the swing.

Brian - these are a real treat every time, and I know they're not easy to shoot through plate-glass windows - many thanks as always, I'm sure I'm not the only one starting to look forward to these posts!

Happy Easter 2017 everyone!

Note: The only dates they've given me are 24th (part 1 of the Simon Hope Matchbox Collection) and the 30th (a very important Star Wars sale, more on which later/next week), however they had previously advertised a Train Sale for the 26th (Friday) a while ago, and Collectors Gazette are listing sales on the 24th, 25th AND 26th, so check with Vectis to see what's what, it's not my job!

Part one comprises a thinning down of his collection, with Simon retaining a core to display at home. The 618 Lots include many interesting Regular wheels and Superfast variations for the dedicated collector, along with entry level estimates for groups of models. Something for everyone! Other News

Let's parler Franglaise: Le webesiete Vichy l'et downe pour les cauntretemps unfortunate! Or something (it wasn't clear in Google translate?), but is appears a fight or some verbal pushing led to virtual fisticuffs and tziegheil'44 (a good year for the left) has shut the site down until everyone calms down or stops crying. I bet I can name the three most likely to have been involved and further bet at least one of them was Banzai's makeitup's-man, but I sadly missed the whole thing!

Strangely - given one of his lieutenants (and right-hand mouse) was almost certainly involved, TJF has remained remarkably silent on the matter, no news flash from the PSTSM headquarters' for us! But then, they are probably busy working on all those reports they announced with a flourish in January as forthcoming from the Toy Fairs in Nuremburg, New York, Nanjing . . . Nantwich . . . Noseby-on-the-Nase?

It's funny, if PSR goes down (even with forewarning), there's a rending of garments and ger'nashing of teeth on all the other main platforms, likewise if HäT's ETS goes down, you can hear the lamentation in Mongolia, but Vichy goes down and this; that wot you is reading, here, now, is it! There's a lesson there for all of us!

H is for How They Come In

Picked-up a Waddington's board game and an Epixx figure which will both be separately posted sometime, but in the meantime a couple of bits to show you . . .

More dinorasers, these double-up as pencil tops and came from one of the card shops, but I can't remember which one, I know it wasn't Clinton's or Birthdays, so it's one of the others! And they were also gathered several weeks ago but missed that week's post!

This was a charity-shop purchase, originating in the pinky-purple zone of toy stores. One of several I now have, I'll Blog them all together one day when I'm feeling particularly mean! But the quite reasonable 54/56mm PVC-like figures set this one apart! No idea on maker/brand, but when I do blog them I'll have all the old Argos/Index/TRU catalogues to guide me!

L is for the Last Supper

Something a bit austere for Good Friday, is Good Friday meant to be austere, or is that Ash Wednesday and when was (or is) Ash Wednesday? Given that the Lord (if you believe in him) burnt his own cathedral to the ground at the start of the second holiest of Holy Weeks (and what message did that send his believers - as far as I know the Burning Bush never lost a leaf!) and that the whole holiday is supposed to be a memorial to the slow, painful, death by suffocation of crucifixion; it ought to be more austere in its entirety than the face-stuff it's become? Ascension Day should be the face-stuffing day - Zombie Jesus!

No branding; no pack drill; probably Italian. A larger lump of poured resin or the euphemistic 'polystone' I shot through the window of a furniture store in Aldershot a year ago and forgot to show you last year! The figures were only around 60mm, so quite compatible with a lot of other stuff, particularly biblical figures, not least - of course - those plinth-based Marx TJF keeps finding!

H is for Hangers

I don't for sure know the history of these, I believe in some parts of the world 'tree hangers' have some tradition at Easter as they do at Christmas, and they only do at Christmas here because they were imported during Victorian/Edwardian times by our 'German' royalty as an early example of globalisation!

However they (hangers) are now becoming an Easter 'thing' over here, and while it's still only in some strata of society, I picked up a bag of them in a charity shop the other day and we'll have a quick shufti - as it's Easter and they're figural!

Only the one duplicate (green-egg hugger) and they are poured-resin with nylon-cord string-hangers. They are what they are.

Hollow, blow-moulded rabbits. The technique seems to involve an element of either cutting/stamping or very thin-walled moulds, as two of the figurines have strange bubbles of flash (arrowed) which have a slim join to the product as if the hot polymer has leaked into an adjoining - yet restrictive - chamber, I can't get my head round picturing it to be honest!

They are like the waste you would get from between repeat stampings in sheet material, maybe a measured shot of polymer is blown into a mold as it stamps together - like a glass bottle mould? Or am I talking crap!

E is for Eggtastic!

Kicking-off a small Easter season, or small season of Easter posts? Anyway, these are old Hungarian egg-painting designs, recorded in the main cultural museum in Hungary which I did name in the past but can't find the notes for! It'll be their equivalent of the V&A or 'British' in London or New York's Metropolitan.

Strange how reminiscent of some other tribal art - from all over the world - some of these designs are, while the pointillist or stippled hatching is very like some Australian native work. I think I like the oak-leaf design (dead centre) most.

Slightly more geometric and/or repeat or mirror designs in red and white, whether they painted the eggs red or white before putting the other colour on, or if they are single colour designs for white or brown eggs is not so clear, but I suspect they are meant to be two colours, as the little kids/infants could block-in and feel they'd helped, while older kids or adults could do the intricate work in a second colour?

My favourite is probably the top-left one, which is another very Aboriginal-looking design.

Have an Eggtastic Easter loyal readers!

Q is for Question Time - Tentage!

Which Spellchecker doesn't like, but then it's American and they probably have 'Ordnance Haberdashery' or something . . . 'Bulk Bivouacs' , in the British army it's tentage, and this tentage is all looking for branding, and not W^D!

As I had one of the tent boxes out the other day, I shot a few of the question marks, and there's pretty-much something for everyone here; a bit of modern polymer, and bit of card and a bit of tin-plate!

Placky-fantacky!

This medieval skullduggery-plotting, for the use of, marquee seems to be pretty modern, manufactured in polypropylene (or some dense, soapy-feel, nylon'y ethylene?), and the blue is probably home paint, I haven't stripped it off as it looks like the sort of PVA blue which tends to stain, so I'll strip if when I'm ready to repaint - whenever that is!

Ends keep falling off!

I wondered if this might be New Ray, or someone similar; a stiff-card tent, pre-cut at the fold-seams and slotting into plastic end-pieces, one open and one closed? But I can't find it in any of my New Ray sources, so some other 'rack-toy' playset? To be honest it could be 'action-figure' sized?

Sharp as a razor!

Bit of age on this one but not as much as you might suspect - I suspect! A sort of tail-end of the hollow-cast era; maybe 1950's? Before that, they (hollow-cast or solid toy soldier box-set accessories) were usually little cotton or linen tents with wire poles and a card base, this is less realistic than those and cheaper to produce - I imagine. Crescent maybe, they did tin-forts and stuff with some of their sets?

F is for Follow-up - Library 'Quiz'

A bit late now, but I took 'em, meant to do something with 'em and need to clear them the hell-out of Picasa and onto a dongle, so let's have a quick look if only just to say 'done'!

So the rat (Lego) was on the Yesteryear (Matchbox) bonnet [hood], the rabbit family (Britains) were in the park, the unknown Dinosaur - a kind of Kerthunkersaurus - was hiding in the woodline and the rack-toy/Halloween party-favour spider was in the back of a dusbin-lorry, which some might consider the best place for a spider!

I'll try to remember to post the answers a bit quicker next year . . . later this year!
